Hi Peeps!

Has anybody else had CD21 blood tests?

We have been TTC #2 for a few months (i'm 39). AF has been all over the place lately and it's been early, then late, then I had quite an extensive mid-cycle bleed last month then this month i've had brown discharge since AF finished (now on CD10!).

Anyway went to see my GP yesterday, not so much about the fact we haven't conceived yet as i'm aware it's taking longer this time as i'm older (DS was conceived in 2nd month when I was 36) but more about how erratic my periods have become. She was SO NICE though, it was lovely. She said she will take some CD 21 blood tests to see if i'm ovulating and if not will refer me to the fertility clinic (3 month waiting list). Am hoping so bad it won't come to that but I was pleasantly surprised at her willingness to refer me, am guessing it's because of my age and don't have time to keep TTC if something needs fixing!

Anyway! I was just wondering if anybody had had these (or any other) tests to determine their fertility etc? xx

Yes I have, in order to get referred to FS.

Its great to have a gp that will do this without a struggle. Its as well doing all the tests that can be in primary care otherwise it slows things up when you actually get your fs appointment.

I did ov however I only had one tube, but the tests all confirmed that fertility was ok and I fell pregnant in between the first and second fs appointment.

Best of luck. XXX

I have.

In 2009 DH & I were trying for 6 months and they did the test and a SA on DH.

Thankfully my GP did it at the first request.

Good luck with it xxx

Thanks guys, i've always had a luteal phase at the shorter end of the scale (according to my persona machine I ovulate on Day 17/18 and have, on average, 28 day cycle). It must have been okay with DS but it seems to be shorter now (cycle started on day 26 so only had 8/9 day luteal phase).

GP said that although your ovulate day can/does change your luteal phase usually stays the same but mine hasn't (at least over the past 2 cycles anyway, 2 months ago it was 13 days last month 8 days!).

I've also been mega mega stressed at work so not sure if that's got anything to do with it.

Have started taking the Zita West pre-natal vitamins which have a good Bvitamin complex to see if that also helps.

It was just so nice to have an understanding talk with the GP as I was fully expecting to be told to keep trying for a few more months.

I think because more women are TTC #1 over 35 the NHS are catching up and being more helpful.

It is good when you have a GP you can talk to x

I did, had that one and the CD3 one too... not a big deal. So far it says we are all good. If nothing happens then Hubby has to get tested next (and boy he does not want to LOL)

I know! what is that all about??? Fortunately my OH went and had his done without a fuss - twice! All good. But honestly, some of my buddies men, well you would have thought they were being led to the gas chamber - All they have to do is what comes naturally and more often than not one of us mugs will take it in for them and pick up their results so they don't even have to put a face to the :spermy:. Meanwhile we're being stabbed with needles, probed with dildo cam, having dye squirted into out tubes! MEN HAVE IT WAY TO EASY!

Ooo, rant over  I've had progesterone tests on more than one occasion, the thing you have to remember is that although it's called the CD21 test that is not always the best day to have it on (hence having to have it on more than one occasion)!. You need to get it done idealy 7 days prior to AF. So my advice is to work out your own optimum time :hugs:

well mine says he just doesn't want to hear that there is anything wrong with his swimmers LOL

COWARD! LOL

Yeah I explained to that I usually ovulated around day 17/18 so CD21 might be too early but she said they would take it then and check the results then I would go back a few days later if need be.

How far do the line are the swimmers checked? Is it possible that sperm count/mobility can also decrease with age (like our eggs?).

yup...not as "time sensitive" as us I believe but indeed...

"Despite not hearing much in the news on male fertility and age, there are quite a few studies on the subject.

One research study, conducted at Soroka University in Israel, looked at semen quality in normal males and compared the quantity and quality of the sperm and semen to the men’s ages. The study looked at everything a semen analysis would include as well as how often they had sex (since sexual abstinence also has an effect on semen quality).

Male Fertility, Age and Strong Swimmers

In the study, they found that, overall, semen quantity peaked between the ages of 30 and 35, while overall semen quantity was found to be lowest after age 55.

They also found that sperm motility – in other words, how well the sperm swim – was best before age 25 and lowest after age 55. In fact, when comparing the number of “good swimming” sperm in men between the ages 30 to 35 with men over age 55, sperm motility decreased by 54%.

These strong variations could not be blamed on sexual abstinence, which was tracked in the study. (In other words, the lower quality semen in the older men could not be blamed on infrequent sex, which can also lead to low-quality sperm.) "

Any doctor or FS worth their weight, should recommend a sperm test be done before a woman goes to far down the line. It is the easiest and least painful thing to check. If there is a problem it is also one that can be addressed.

I had the opposite problem with my first progesterone test - AF came 2 days later! FS said it didn't count and I had to do it all again the following cycle - the 2nd time it was good. I also managed to get the FS to order me a scan and from that I was told that I had definitely o'd and from the right Ovary - I was most impressed.

I'm in my late 30s and OH in his early 40s. I was 36 and he 40 when we conceived DS but we are now 2 years + or so older so both of our fertility has very probably declined (although more so mine I suspect).

Only on CD10 today so still have a while to wait before the tests! She mentioned other tests but not sure if they would be done at the practice or at the specialists after she has referred me

Hi. I'm 39 OH is 42 and we have been TTC for over a year. I got my bloods taken last month on day 21. I have a fab doc too who had no problems booking me in for them. Results back all good I'm ovulating. OH has to have sc done this week. I'm laughing at your comments so true!! You would think I've asked him to cut his hand off!! And so right it'll be me that takes them to lab. Not him. Then we have first hospital visit 6th April. I feel so much happier we are in the system to get things checked.

What will happen at your hospital visit in April? How long have you been waiting for an appt? xx
