How do you use your central heating.? Do you have it on at all times and adjust via the thermostat or do u have it on a timer..? What temperature do you have it set to?

I normally have mine come on from 5pm til 8.15pm. Eli woke up last night and when I went into him his room was cold so have decided to take it off timer tonight and have it keeping the house at 15 degrees all night.. I worry about using too much gas as I already pay a lot but I'd rather pay more than him be cold.. Just curious what other people do with their heating? :flower:

It's on a timer. Don't think there is a way to alter temperate on mine as it is an older system.

I have it on for two hours before I get up, then I get up and set the log burner in the lounge which heats up the lounge/kitchen and dining area and then I turn the heating on again about two hours before bed as I let the stove burn out.

House is always pretty toasty!!

I am on oil. If I didn't have the stove I would of probably had the heating on all day. It has been so cold the garden didn't even defrost!

It's actually cheaper to keep it on all of the time so it's at a constant temp. If its having to warm up a cold house every day it costs a lot more.

Ours is set to 16 at night and about 20. During the day, I just adjust it as required though really.

Like pp said, it's cheaper to keep a house warm than go heat it from cold. At night it's set to 16, and the day 19, we did have it 18 in the day, and 19 for an hour in the morning so ill get out of bed lol. But now it's 19 all day just because seeing frost makes me cold lol.

Ours is on all the time on low, we just adjust it if we feel the cold. I think its on 16 x

When I use it I leave it on all the time. (My dad may change my thermostat for me when he's here to a programmable though, so then I'd set it to go down when I'm at work.) If I feel cold I'll turn it up and if I'm too hot I'll adjust it down. We've been using the AC the last few weeks though. ;)

It's in a timer but I don't know what times as OH set it and I have no idea how to change it.

Think it comes on around half 6 - half 8 but after that I don't know. I just switch it in when I'm chilly.

We live in a new build with good windows and insulation so tbh it never gets freezing even without the heating on

Those of you that have it on all the time. What are your winter bills like? Thanks :flower:

We used to have it on timer, and it used to go come on at 5.00 (when I used to get up) and go off at 09.30 then, come on again at 17.00 - 22.00.

But now I'm home with the baby it's on pretty much all day we also like to be quite warm so have it between 21-23oc, only half the house is double glazed so we loose loads of heat out of the windows and upstairs is partically chilly.

Our thermostat is quite responsive so if we alter the temp, either way, it happens pretty quick.

Our bills are about £60 a month gas and electric, but have always been this and we are in credit, I don't mind paying for things like this I HATE being cold.

Ours is on a timer it comes on twice a day for about an hour at a time, thermostat is set to about 30 though, oh and I'm also forever just turning it on for a few hours midday when I'm at home

Tempted to try it all day at about 17? and see what that does we are currently on a pay as you go gas and use about £15 a week, those who leave it all day are you payg and how much a week is roughly costing you?

I'm here all day everyday (near enough, I'm disabld so don't go out much so bear this this in mind)
For gas and electricity we pay £160 per month every month throughout the year.

We have a gas cooker and I cook every night and do a lot of baking. So yeah it is high but I'm sure yours wouldn't be as high as ours because of the other factors added :flower:

ETA I went on to uswitch earlier and switched from British gas to cooperative making our bill £107.65 per month from the above price of £160 which is really good. I advise checking on uswitch to make sure you have the best deal, it's helpful to phone your current supplier and getting you exact usage in kwz per year to get the best deal.
Hope this helps someone :)

We don't have a clue how to use the boiler. We use the thermostat and the room stays around 20 degrees. My husband is always too cold and I'm always too hot :dohh:

Just after posting this last night I went to bed and about an hour later I woke up absolutely boiling hot.. Which is odd as my room is the only room in the house without a radiator and it always feels like a fridge when I go up to bed at night. My dad told me the thing about using the thermostat, when my ex and I lived in our old flat we'd have the heating off all day then turn it right up 25 for an hour or two then switch it off again which apparently is very uneconomical as some PP have said... I pay £130 atm for gas an electric but I owe some money to them which is why it's so high.. Might start leaving the heating on all day at a low but constant temperature and see how the bills go..

I have it on all the time at 26 cos I hate being cold. Bill isn't too high though, 30-40 euros a month.

So I set it to 17 and left it on after 3 hours I was shivering, turns out the gas had run out :haha:

topped up and set it at 19 as it still didnt seem to be doing much at 17, feels a touch warmer but I guess it will take a few days for it to be a noticable different, will be interesting to see how much it costs us :)

we have ours on 2 hours in the morning adn 4 at night. Its oil though and my dad said that with his boiler to keep it on ALL day at a low temp even cost him about £14 a DAY. Although he may be exaggerating...............I hope!

We plan on getting a woodburning stove as my parents house has one and it keeps the place nice and warm!

Ours is on constant, set at 17.5, but we turn it up to 19 if we're feeling chilly.

I did a two year test on my heating (OH is an accountant and was insistent that it was much more efficient to only put it on as and when we needed it).
During the first year i put the heating on twice a day for 1-2 hours. The house was cold pretty much all the time.
The the second year when it got to about Oct i put the heating on and would just adjust the thermostat as and when - generally we'd have it on 23 during the day and about 12 at night.

I don't know what they exact figures were but i do know that we roughly halved the amount that we paid for the gas part of our bill.

As things stand now we average a combined gas/electric bill of £60 per month all year round.

Sorry, can i just clarify..you halved your bill by leaving it on a constant low temp? X
