Hi probs been asked a zillion times but im njust so unsure at what to do...

I bf for 3 weeks, she had a little cow and gate in hospital and seemed ok on it.

When I stopped bfing I decided on Aptimil as was told it was "closest to breast milk" she got a bit constipated at the change and seemed a bit colicky so we switched to comfort milk. She has the usual smelly farts and poos a couple of times a day but her pumps really hurt her still :( She has just never seemed like a "settled" baby and always seems unhappy, she will fall asleep and I will put her down and she is up again 5 mins later with wind even tho I burped her and got plenty up. Iv tried infacol, gaviscon (as she was a bit sicky too ? reflux), detinox, gripe water and nothing works I stopped everything as was worried she was getting too much medicines.

Anyway my question is:

Do you think I should change back to Aptimil first milk or change to a diff milk such as cow and gate or just perceivier? HV mentioned a lactose free milk but I bf and she was fine so surely that cant be the answer?

Thanks :)

Hi hon, sorry your baby not feeling good. My Lo has has terrible colic for a few weeks and we have just moved from Aptimil first over to comfort milk. The comfort milk has definately reduced her symptons although she still has been trumping and it seems to hurt her and she is not completely back to herself. I guess it depends on the reason for your babies discomfort but have you thought of trying colief? I haven't used it yet because I changed to comfort first but I know it's an option for babies who struggle with lactose in the milk. I think this is my LO's problem as the comfort has half the lactose of first milk and it has helped her. If the comfor hasn't helped then maybe it won't help, but I knew my LO had pain low down, and had terrble pain passing wind, whereas bringing up her wind was never a big problem so I knew that the infacol/dentinox and grip water were good to use but weren't going to solve her problem. Hope you find a solution. How long of you been on the comfort? It took 2 full days for me to see a difference x

About you BFeeding first, I really don't know if it could be but maybe you should try and eliminate the lactose thing anyway? Maybe it's something to do with the makeup of breast milk and formula? If the colief works it is a lactose issue. Also I stopped the infacol at one point for the same reason as you, felt like I was giving her too many things but HV said it works best over time and it really does no harm as isn't absorbed into their system. Although like you getting her wind up wasn't the problem, but I have kept the infacol use up anyway. If it is lactose I would consider staying on the comfort and adding Colief. sorry to ramble. good luck with whatever you do hon, hope your baby feels much much better soon x

Hi hun, this sounds exactly like Millie, we put her on Comfort but have been trying normal Aptamil, and to be honest she seems so much better, but I have now put her on Dr Browns, I find now, I just sit her up and she burps and doesnt seem to have any more trapped wind (touch wood)

well running out of comfort so going to buy normal aptimal and perhaps dr brown bottles too thanks girls x

we're finishing the tub of comfort and going back onto Aptamil 1. i have heard that colif is amazing and can be used in conjunction with infacol. we've been using infacol for a few days now and have been giving her gripe water if she seems to be struggling with wind too. i think it just seems to have hit peak just now because she's going through a growth spurt too so... fingers crossed Lib will get better as with Pixie.

i've heard Mam colic bottles are good - they self sterilise too :)

Really, ooh Im off to have a look at them, I have only bought 2 of the Dr Browns to see if there was a difference.

thanks hun, just bought colief, dr brown and aptimil one haha wish id kept bfing its costing me a bloody fortune, just spent loads on new teats for comfort milk! hope they both improve soon x

lactose intolerance doesn't usually present immediately from birth; so this is why the lactose issue may not have been a problem when BF, its worth trying a normal formula again but if you're still having problems I'd advise trying the lactose free...

i've done the exact same. bought a load of vari flow teats for my TT bottles :dohh:

Yeah with my LO in mind she had no probems really before 4/5 weeks she fed happily on Aptimal 1, the problems started then. Just had kiddicare at the door with a bag load of new teats!! You're so right , it's so expensive. My LO had another bad night (not as bad as before comfort) so am going to add colief today as the comfort milk has helped but not resolved the problem. I am going to add colief to the comfort milk as don't want to change her milk again as it has helped. Hope your new combination helps your LO

thanks... it sucks doesnt it lol I just want her to be happy and content

If this doesnt work Im going with a lactose free milk as if it is the problem id rather rule it out than change to another milk then change to it, wereas if the lactose free we still have this isse at least I can rule it out.

Hey hun

Macy had the same problem, she was colicky and constipated on Aptamil One so we switched to Aptamil Comfort, it helped a little but not much and I stopped as the comfort milk gave her terrible painful wind all day and night. I tried it again yesterday as Macy now has silent reflux so I thought the thicker formula might help but last night she was restless and up and down passing wind all night again - the comfort milk just doesn't agree with her!

I got on much better with the normal Aptamil and I used Gripe Water in each feed and Detinox afterwards - it helped massively until the pain from the silent reflux started so now we're on Gaviscon I can't use anything else :-(

xxx

P.S. For the constipation I give Macy a syringe full of water after every feed (she won't take it from a bottle) and it helps loads and loads!

thanks hun I think it was just the switch from breastmilk that made her constipated and after that she poo'd every 2 days on aptimil but it was loose so thats not constipation anymore..

It a nightmare isnt it, your sig says happy mum- happy baby and thats what I kept telling people when I stopped but we both dont seem very happy which makes me so feel so bad I stopped

I have experienced the same problems as you and have also tried the same range of meds and nothing worked. I was previously using sma gold and my little boy was always so unsettled he ended up getting constipated - still going but hard stools. I am now using cow and gate comfort as well as infacol. I would recomment the cow and gate comfort. My little man is still a bit restless but the c&g has def helped.

This is a great thread!!
Everyones symtoms sound just like my little one! He is nearly three months now but the last 10 weeks have been a nightmare! To date i have tried cow and gate 1 he screamd through every feed and then wouldnt take it!
So then i tried every single bottle on the market and settled for nuk but then they made him windy so i put him on the avent ones for colic (talk about expence i must have at least 20 bottles!!) He has had every med on the market too inclueding lactose free sma but he seemed worse on that! so eny way that didnt work by this point i was pulling my hair out, so put him on aptimel comfort and got some improvement but like you are saying his wind is really sore and some times he screams after a pump!! His poos are green and loose on it but it HV said they would be that way!!
So i think ill try the aptimel 1 and see if finally that will help!
I was told by HV not to bother putting colief in the comfort milk coz it wont do ne thing as the milk already has been treated!!!
Thanks ladies im an intruder to the post but just to say thanks!! x

Hiya, I spoke to my GP today and also the Aptimal helpline and they both said that adding colief to comfort milk is an option as the comfort milk still has a lactose content so the colief will reduce that further x x

:thumbup:thanks : iv switched now tho if it is lactose it will prob be cheaper buying lactose free milk than the comfort and colief as both most expensive x
