Circumcision?

No way, never! Like a lot of the other posters, I can't really believe that in this day and age it's still so common. To me it's genital mutilation and unless there are medical reasons I can't see one single other reason for this being done!

As for all the people saying it's cleaner and there's less risk of infection : wtf? What about girls? We have 'flaps' of skin down below and we manage to stay clean and healthy. It seems like a lame excuse to me. You can't trust your son to take care of his own body?

I'm SO glad that it's not the norm in Europe where we live and that this isn't even a question that had to be considered.

that video is shocking just the pic on the front was enough for me

Agree, I teared up and stopped watching when they put the needle in.
The doctor says that the MAIN reason this is done is for cosmetic reasons. I'm sorry but I would just never be able to do that to my child for what amounts to a cosmetic procedure.
Cutting off your son's foreskin to prevent some obscure future health issue just doesn't sit well with me :nope: Yes there are the odd issue that could arise, but most of these can be prevented with the proper care.
There are also lots of health issues that can arise from other parts of the body (ie breasts), but we don't start cutting those off so your daughter doesn't get breast cancer (which is significantly more common than health issues due to foreskins), so why is it ok to do this?

I respect your opinion here so not arguing but I do have to say you are mistaken. Babies and children to not comprehend pain the same way adults do. It's a protection mechanism. Imagine if as an adult you fell down several times a day, it would hurt for awhile right? When a toddler falls frequently it doesn't hurt the same, they are built that way lol.
As a student nurse I have been with a baby whist they are being circumsized and they do cry it can also be very painful to pass urine and I have seen babies cry when they do wee. The health benefits are minimal and the foreskin is there to protect the penis. I saw someone say earlier in the thread they wouldn't want an adult male to have the pain and remember it. So if it is painful for and adult then imagine how painful it must be for a baby? The pain receptors are still there and pain is often magnified for babies and children. As adults tend to have higher pain thresh holds. Also a unessicary surgical procedure I feel should be the childs descion and I do not understand why parents feel they can choose to have a body part removed purely because they want to look like daddy etc . X eta: sorry for spelling and grammar on my phone x

That, is a crock of shit. You don't remember being a baby, and feeling pain.. you can't feel what others feel! if they weren't made to have foreskin, it wouldn't be there! unless for medical reasons, no reason to remove it.

You know I'm being nice here and respect Everyones opinion, if you want to disagree with me that's fine but no need to be rude.

Okay, for being a nurse, I wonder where you get your information. Toddlers dont feel as much pain when they fall because they are 2 feet high, and weigh 25#. Their tendons are looser, their bones have not fused, and are still "free" floating. A grown adult weighs roughly 130# is 5'5" and their bones are solid, fixed, and their tendons do not give. Of course it hurts more. It has nothing to do with their pain receptors, or the way they process it, it is physics, plain and simple. Babies, and children do feel more pain and feel it more acutely than adults do. And just because a baby does not cry a ton does not mean they are okay, sometimes it is just too much for them and they shut down.

Anyway I am removing myself fronthis xoversation. I was enjoying hearing Everyones opinions (yes even the ones different then mine) but it's very frustrating trying to be respectful to all and not get the same. Hope everyone has a great day and if course makes the decision that is best for THEM.

Now that makes sense! Never thought of it that way but you're right!

It genuinely shocks me that in 2011, people think it is acceptable to cut a babies penis. My brain literally can't compute it, it's obscene.

It doesn't prevent against AIDs, condoms do. It doesn't cause good hygiene, education does.

Under no circumstances would I do this! It's neither natural nor in most cases needed.

xx

No but then I'm from the UK and it's not done here unless you are Jewish/muslim. Also, our NHS won't pay for it unless it's for medical reasons so you'd have to go private so that makes it even less common. I do wonder why evolution would supply a man with something so useless and harmful it has to be removed at birth. I generally believe nature created foreskins for a reason and they should be left alone to do their thing but that's just me.

She was being rude because what you said was bloody ridiculous!!
How the hell would you know if a baby comprehends pain the same way adults do?!!!!!! GRRR! Some people on this thread are just impossible. :nope:

babies obviously feel pain.. but that aside the point its its just not right to cut off a perfectly normal healthy part of a boys annatomy wheather they remember it or not it should be up to them when older and only left for a parent to decide if was medicaly needed..

Not sure about the whole "looks" argument, do we not all agree that the penis, circ'd or not, is really just ugly anyways? Who cares how it looks... they all look like the damn monster from Alien.

exactley.. unless their health is in jeopardy then it shouldnt be done IMO

I'm not a mother yet but if I ever have a boy I definitely won't have him circumcised! My OH is circumcised and he has a very hard time finishing when we DTD...at least 3 different doctors have told us that it's due do the circumcision. It's caused problems to him psychologically because he doesn't feel normal. It took a long time for us to work through the psychological effects and we still have some issues from time to time!...and after discussing it with friends and doctors I've learnt that a great number of men with circumcisions have similar issues when they're older.

I definitely would not want that for my son and neither does my husband unless there is a medical issue and it's absolutely necessary to be done.

 It so does!

PS, OT but congrats on bubba #2!
