Cleft Lip on 20week 2d scan.. Please Help!

Well, I'm sorry you found this out, but it's probably not going to be a big deal to fix. I've known a lot of people who have had cleft palate repairs; it's not that you can't tell (I can tell, anyway), it's that it doesn't look bad. I actually think it makes guys look handsome and interesting (think Joaquin Phoenix).
It will be okay.

Thank you!! I really don't know what to think about this until we can get a better scan to tell us really what we are dealing with. I know that this will be able to be fixed, it just breaks my heart! I really want to find out what the chances are that they can be wrong... I really just dont feel comfortable about how the appointment went when the doc told me. He really had no info for me other than that the baby has a cleft on the left side. I would of liked to hear along with that how bad it is or if his nose is involved and what the chances are that it is a small or big deal. Has anyone heard of someone being told that the baby has a cleft lip then really nothing was wrong? I know I dont need to get my hopes up but just would like to hear that it can happen..... Thank you to all of you!

I don't want to build your hopes up but I was watching a programme on discovery and they thought the baby had a cleft lip until they had the 4d scan and showed everything was ok..Maybe thats an option??? big hugs xxx

Do you happen to know the name of the show? I have looked on the discovery channel's website and can't find it....

I don't want to scare you, but in your shoes, I'd be running out to get a 3D/4D done to find out whether there's actually a cleft or not. I found this site: https://www.widesmiles2.org/cleftlinks/WS-309.html and the specialist they're talking to states that if a facial deformity is found, the doctor should be advising an amnio be done to rule out other problems.

Thank you a million!!!! When you found out did they have a clear picture? My Doctor did say that in 8 weeks I would have another ultrasound and talk to a specialist to rule out any other issues that can be related. I just feel so unsure about it since nothing was seen clearly. I did just find a place in Oregon not too far that does a 15 minute 4d scan for $175. That will probably be our next step. I just find it strange that the doctor doesn't want us to have another scan for 2 months I will be 31 weeks!! I will check out those sites as well! Thank you again! Tons of hugs your way!!

I think you should get a 3D scan as soon as you can. 8 weeks is so long to wait and to worry. It will help you to see how severe the cleft is rather than have to guess as you are doing now.

My colleague recently told me she had a cleft lip and palate and I didn't even know! The surgery is amazing and a fairly easy procedure.

i cant give you much advice, because i dont know but i agree a 3d scan might be a good idea. I watched inside the human body a while back and it actually had a section on cleft lip and palate, and it showed some kids with the cleft lip before and sfter surgery, the results were amazing and it might be worth watching, as they tell you how it all happens. Let us know how you get on with this x

My nephew was born with a cleft lip. They picked his up on the 20 week scan and the hospital sent them for a 4d scan all paid for so that they could see for theirselves and let the hospital get a better look. After their 4d scan the sonographer said that she couldnt believe they had picked it up on the 20 week scan as it was so small and they didnt believe it was that palate. When he was born dont get me wrong yes he looked slightly different but you dont bother he was beautiful and if anything it makes you want to protect and love them more. He had slight sucking issues and had to use special teets for the bottles but this was no problem. He had an operation at around 6 weeks to repair his lip. He has no palate problems but just has a slight breathing problem due to a tiny hole at the back of his throat due to the lip etc. He went for a review at 12 months and got told that he should never have to have any more surgery on it and now at nearly 18 months you cant even tell anything is wrong. They said his speech and teeth should not be affected.
I am sorry to hear that you have been told this news but they are so good in what they do these days, everything is repairable.

Thank you everyone! My husband and I are going to be calling our Doctor on Monday and ask some more questions. This was the FIRST appointment my husband wasn't able to go to and really didn't think it was going to be a big deal considering we just went and had the scan done the week before, anyways when the doctor told me I was in shock and guess I really didn't know what to ask. The more that we have heard for all of you and researched we just can't wait another 8 weeks for another look. So guess our next step is to call him and see if he can order a 3d -4d scan at a different hospital that offers it and go from there.. I again thank every one of you for the support and feedback I am still in shock over all of this.

Hi! i haven't read through all of the replies yet, but I am a Speech Therapist who took a few classes in grad school about cleft lip/palate, and also worked with a few patients who did. If it is in fact true, you are in luck because you'll have a whole team ready to help you and the baby. Even though that might sound scary, it is really reassuring to people I've talked to that they performed the surgery (which like others have said usually leaves minimal scarring.) If it's only the lip that is easy. if it's the palate too they might require a second surgery later as the palate grows, but again, palates are also very easy to fix and the team at the hospital is going to make you feel so much more reassured. I can imagine that this is horrifyingly scary. Once you get more information and things get underway I really think you will feel so reassured in the overall outcome! Keep us posted!

Actually, I haven't had any indication yet that my baby has either, but I had both a cleft lip and palate on the left when I was born, so I know a little about them. When I go for my 20 week scan I'll be asking them to take a really close look though! The average risk of having a baby with cleft lip and/or palate is 1 in 600. Because I had one, my risk jumps up to 2-5%.

It sucks to go through, but one bright side is that they fix so much of it very early - a baby born with clefting really isn't going to remember much of the surgeries or anything like that, especially these days. I had to wait for some of the cosmetic fixes until I was 18, because they didn't like to do them because they "might just have to be done again later". Now they tend to make everything look "normal" a lot sooner (even if they might need a touch up later), because it makes getting through school much easier on kids when they fit in!
