Would you re-use a mattress you have got or would you buy new?
Ive still got my three yr olds mattress that i got new and she used it for three year and since then its been stored under her bed.

If it was only me that used it and it no one in the family smoked id reuse it

It's a tricky one. I've read every baby should get a new mattress, but at the same time it seems counter-intuitive! You've already got one, so why not reuse it?

I'm getting a new one for our new baby when she transitions into my son's cot (got to get him into a toddler bed first) - I am very afraid of SIDS and it's from guidelines preventing SIDS that I read every baby should have a new mattress, so I'm following that advice.

Does anyone know why SIDS recommend a new one? Seems odd since they normally have waterproof covers and sheets on them anyway

I'm going to use my sons, we don't smoke and its been stored since he went into his big boy bed

I agree if you don't know the history of where it's been but I think if it's been in your own house and no smokers around replacing it is silly

We plan to reuse all of the nursery furniture we had for DS and he will be moving into a single bed. We have bought a new cotbed mattress though, in fact it is the exact same mattress we already have but I read somewhere that it was safer to buy a new one. Luckily we got it half price on sale so it was only £70, we paid full price when we bought it for DS.

According to SIDS:

"As long as the mattress was covered in PVC and was in good condition, no sagging or rips in the plastic, it was fine. Just give it a good clean."

The scientific case for it is here:

https://www.sidsandkids.org/documents/SecondhandmattressesInformationStatement.pdf

In summary:

"Although there is some evidence to show that there is a higher incidence of SIDS on some second hand mattresses, it is not known what condition these mattresses were in or what position these babies slept in. There is no evidence to show that the risk of SIDS increases for babies who sleep on their back and on a firm, clean, well fitting mattress that is in good condition."

FSIDS website:

"Ideally you should buy a new mattress. If you are not able to do this, use the one you have, as long as it was made with a completely waterproof cover and has no tears, cracks or holes. Clean and dry it thoroughly. Check that the mattress is in good condition; is firm, not soft; fits the cot without any gaps; and doesn’t sag. It is very important that your baby’s mattress is kept clean and dry".

So I guess take a view of the condition of the mattress and go from there. As a worrier, I would probably replace it - but having done some quick research I am not convinced it's necessary if the mattress and cot are within the same non smoking family.

HTH you make your mind up either way!! :) :flower:

xx

I'll be replacing ours as dd will have used it for nearly 3 years at that point and it hasn't ever had a waterproof cover on so I just don't feel happy reusing it.

Thanks for posting that Rickles.

I'm sure it's fine to reuse a mattress from a previous child, but as a worrier I'm going to be getting a new one for this baby.

It looks like i will be getting a new one then.. thanx everyone x

thanks for this- i always wonder why they would ask you to replace a mattress for baby.

This is our first but will be reusing some furniture from family and friends etc- so will get new mattress anyway - good to know for later :)

We have toyed with the idea of re-using my daughters cotbed mattress for baby as she had the best one available and has only used it for 2 years BUT it's quite stained on one side as I didn't put a waterproof sheet on/mattress protector :dohh:
So will be buying a new one for baby just for cleanliness.

We sold our crib mattress at our garage sale over the summer. Of course, now I'm pregnant and wish we'd held on to it just a little longer. If a mattress is in good condition, fits the crib well and is still firm I would reuse it.

I plan to reuse the crib mattress. My son used it for 8wks before he moved into his cot. Providing it looks in good condition I don't have any issues reusing it.

I am reusing my daughters mattress. It's still in good condition and it's covered in plastic so it's easy to clean.
