Dairy free moms

There is no need to discontinue BFing and it may be very difficult if not impossible to go back to Bf afterwards, it usually takes 2-3 weeks for dairy proteins to fully get out of your system but there is no harm to your LO in the meantime. I was told by the specialist who was dealing with my second eldest's allergies that these special formulas are designed for when BF is not possible, if a mother is able to BF then she should continue to do so while eliminating foods from her own diet if needed. The specialist said even if the mother is not able to discover all the foods causing a problem and her child still has some symptoms, this is still better than any formula and BF children tend to outgrow allergies more quickly and suffer less long term allergies or related problems like asthma xx

Hi all. My pediatrician has suggested that my LO might have a milk allergy but we're not sure yet. Her symptoms are:
  • Explosive, liquid bowel movements
  • Colic/fussiness, especially in the evenings
  • Spitting up a LOT, sometimes forcefully
  • Bloating and gassiness
  • Occasional greenish/brownish stools
  • Nasal congestion
She's gaining weight really well (almost a pound a week right now) but most of the time she seems so unhappy and uncomfortable, it just breaks my heart :nope:

Anyway, I have a few questions for you ladies...

  • Did all of your babies have some kind of skin rash?
  • How soon did you see improvement after cutting dairy from your diet?
  • When you have dairy accidentally, how soon does your LO start showing symptoms? And what are the first ones?

Hi

To answer your questions, yes all of my three boys with a milk issue had a dry, itchy type rash, mainly on the face but also on the torso and arms. With my youngest we started to see a definite improvement in his symptoms within 24 hours and within a week he was like a different baby. Also with him thankfully if I accidentally ate dairy (or soya which he started reacting to 8 weeks in) he would show symptoms within 2-3 hours and because it was a small amount and not a big build up it would seem to be out of his system within 72 hours. Xx

Hi! Minus the forceful spit up, my little guy has the exact symptoms. he also sometimes has a small amount of blood in his stool. I have been off dairy for 2 weeks now with no improvement, he almost seems more uncomfortable actually :-( I talked to a lactation specialist and she thinks it may be a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance and maybe an oversupply issue. Might want to read up on that too. Most babies with dairy issues have problems gaining weight and my LO has been gaining weight really well.

Im really frusterated and stressed out about all of this not knowing if its a dairy issue or soy or foremilk/hindmilk problem or something else. UGH Im about ready to quit breastfeeding :-(

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I have an oversupply/overactive letdown issue as well. The pediatrician told me to try block nursing, which I've been doing for almost a week. LO has definitely been a bit less fussy at the breast and she hasn't been having as many greenish stools, but the rest of her symptoms are as bad as ever :nope: I'm wondering if I should just try a total elimination diet like this one and see what happens.

Anyway, I understand your frustration, but don't give up on breastfeeding! From what I've read, babies with sensitive systems often do even worse on formula, plus you have a lot less control over what's in it. Hopefully we'll both be able to sort out our LO's issues and get them feeling better soon.

Just a quick question, what tastes better oat milk or almond milk?

I prefer almond milk but it is quite a strong 'nutty' taste IMHO, if you can get hold of the coconut milk (not the canned one but the cold pressed one in a carton designed as a dairy sub) then this is even more neutral and in cooking and baking has virtually identical properties to cows milk. xx

Thanks. Wish i could get coconut milk here but they don't sell it like that in NZ :(

They may start, its only very recently they started here. Apparently some of the powdered brands that you mix with water are quite nice as long as you mix them in a blender with ice water (and may possibly have to sieve it as well). Not sure if they have those types there as they often have address details for Aus and NZ on the boxes of ones we have over here? xx

Thank you, I hope we can both get things figured out as well! I REALLY want to continue to breastfeed but Im definitely having many moments where Im ready to throw in the towel. Im determined to do it though!!! I think Im going to give the block nursing and doing laid back breastfeeding along with no dairy for another week and if things are still back I think I may give the elimination diet that you posted a try!!!

Hey ladies...just wanted to say this thread is great support. I was DF for my littlest, and it literally transformed her. I can now eat what I want (although I avoid cows milk and cream, as it gives me stomach ache...always has) including ice cream, desserts etc. Ally has also had tiny bits, and been fine (more by accident, than design!)

There are lots of DF options out there, including treats, and I have a stack of recipes if you're interested.

Hello everyone! :hi:

I've been dairy free for a couple of months now and the difference in my little boy is great. I don't think he has as severe a reaction as some of your little ones but he is so much more settled now.

I've not been finding it too hard but I've just been told about this thread and i'm so excited to find out about the number of substitutions there are to things like chocolate and cake (that I'm really missing!) although i would love to hear if there were any really good cheese substitions (I really want a pizza lol!)

It's kind of nice to know that you're not alone dealing with something like this (although obviously i wish nobody had any issues at all!!) and with all the ideas on here i'll be able to vary my diet a bit more again now

x

Hi hunniechunks, glad your little man is doing better now you are dairy free.

A positive update from me, after 9 months it seems Cora can tolerate some dairy through my breastmilk :happydance: I had some dairy 3 days in a row a couple of weeks ago, an icecream on our last dday of holiday (having abstained all week!), a yorkshire pudding in the inflight meal on the way home and then I had 3 courses at a wedding the next day which must have contained dairy.............no mucous poos, sleeping no worse than normal! hurrah!

Bumping this old thread for maybaby! So many good tips if you can find time to read through ;) x
