Debate: Capital punishment

I used to think that the best thing for murderers and rapists was for them to just be gotten rid of. I since changed my mind. I would much rather they had to suffer in prison for the rest of their lives. Like Ian Huntley for example. He has been subject of attack many times for what he did. I would much rather that than having him take the "easy way out" I'm all for human rights but in my eyes, if you can kill/rape anyone then you should be stripped of them just like they stripped their victims of theirs. But an eye for an eye is practically letting them off. I think prisons need to have a stricter system. No playstations etc. And the British Justice system is in need of some serious re-thinking. You can get more time in prison for pirating a film than you can for GBH. If someone murders somebody and they are given life it should be life. Not "We'll say life but if you're good we'll let you out in 20 years"

Thats a joke! they should be focusing on malicious crimes. Crimes such as this I feel would be better dealth with by fines. the person is trying to make a quick buck with pirating films so hit them where they'll hurt - their wallets! i dont personally feel someone, such as those pirating films should be 'serving time'. Its animals like murderers, rapists, violent thieves etc that need caging. This is what i mean by saying the system needs an overhaul :dohh:

Just my little opinion though :flower:

I haven't read this whole thing, but for anyone really interested in this watch the film "The Life of David Gale", just be warned it will make you cry xx

Gosh, I had forgotten about that film! Blindingly good suggestion.

You can get up to 15 years in prison for filming illegally at a cinema. I read somewhere recently that the average jail sentance for GBH is around 7-8 years. Shocking priorities

You can get, but I would be interested to see what people actually get. Same as you can theoretically get life for GBH, it isn't what people actually tend to be sentenced to.

True but to even set out those guidelines in that order seems silly. Someone pirating could only get 2 years, someone accused of GBH could get 9 years. But it seems strange that on average there would be that much difference between very different crimes

Ok, slightly OT but who has seen those shows on TV about America's toughest jails? THAT is what i think we should have over here. Those guys have no life, no treats, nothing to look forward to. Their cells are tiny, cramped and they are surrounded by gang members, drug dealers and murderers - the gangs are scared. THAT is how a murderer should live, forever. The super-dangerous ones get to stand in a cage for 15 minutes in the sun once a week. Thats his "yard time". Over here? they get to play games, and go on the internet, read books, get qualifications....

I think a "life sentence" has been weakened and watered down, so much so that no one really cares about the consequences anymore - make them fear their punishment, then maybe they will think twice.

Death doesn't solve anything, on either side. Never has & never will - Same could be said for war, but we wont go into that ;)

I am totally for what you are saying here. My old swim coach worked in Barlinnie (sp?) prison near Glasgow. They actually had OPEN DAYS and let schools in to talk to prisoners and walk around, and the prison was really nice, comfy beds, tv's with sky and freeview etc. This was the same with Perth prison as well. My ex was there on remand (he was emotionally and physically abusive to me and I was naive and 15 years old) and he was allowed to wear his own clothes and a top that said HMP Perth. He said there was good showers, private toilets in the cells, a gym, games to play outside etc. It was like a feaking holiday camp! Even in the visiting room there was vending machines where the inmates could ask someone to get them crisps, juice, coffee, tea etc. all which they could take back with them :S

I definately think our prisons should be more like the ones on that TV show.

they only let you wear your clothes when on remand as youve not been sentced you on a seperate wing to normal prisioners! he prob wasnt on a high cat wing the higher your on the leaa you have! they do have auctions for food where they can bid wirth money for mc ds and the money goes to charity! theres lots of dodge screws who bring take away ects in for the big players in the jail! x

the trouble is our prisons are over crowded now, but again is that not because for a certain group of people life inside is actually better/easy than life on the outside and therefore the governments own making? This is why so many people get out early on 'good behavior'

Didn't they say about a year ago about bring back floating prisons?

Oh yeah hun I agree, seems very strange. But then, it's the same as they have much higher penalties for benefit fraud than tax evasion - the latter costs many times higher, but it has much more lenient penalties.

personaly i do "like" the idea of capital punishment for certain crimes, but then like im sure others have said its then over for them bu the people left behind still have to suffer. but prison should be changed, i dont see why they should be able to get tvs and sky ect.
also life should actualy mean life, if for certain crimes they are facing say 9 yrs that is what they should get.

it really gets to me when u hear of people abusing children, rape ect and they are let out years before the sentence is up.

Yeah, i think they should need to serve the entire sentence too. I dont think its fair or right that they can get out years and years earlier for being 'good' in prison

He was on remand, others in his wing weren't. Yet they all came out in just a prison tshirt plus their trainers, jeans, trakkies etc. This wasn't a food auction. This was prisoners going into a visiting room and getting their relatives/friends to buy them lots of cans of juice/chocolate/crisps that they would then take back to their cells for when they were hungry later on. Please don't tell me what I meant.

When I was taken around maximum security Woodhill prision, I can't say I saw any of this luxury, it looked like a shithole and the prisoners where treated like rubbish that we spoke to - but most of them were nearly due to be out and accepted they deserved it. They said the worst part of prison anyway was being taken away from family and their kids, ect. They said no amount of treats or anything could take away the pain of that and it would stop them re-offending in future.

This was with sixth form btw, I wasn't an inmate.

not all prisoners have families to come out to or dont care that they do or the other way around lol

my ohs mate was in prison for a week n in that week he was given a cup and tea bags but wasnt allowed a kettle until the next week when he wudnt even be there, so in that prison it was the longer ur here the more u get or "earn" as they called it.

i think it might be also hyped up in the papers sayin that ian bloke who killed those two girls had a ps3 in his room and sky. i guess we wont really no whats its like or the trust about tvs ect in there unless we went to prison

no need to be snotty it must be adifferent in every other jail but that one! i wasnt saying they had a food auction i was saying tahts what they do in other prisons actually!

and remand prisoners cant be mixed with sentenced prisoners unless in very speacil curcumstances!

clothes can only be worn in open prisons or on low cat wings so they must not have been sentenced for things that were classed as high cat!

they can buy cans of pop ect of the prison menu! but are only aloud a certain amount!

for your info i wasnt telling you i was sayimg how iy works at all the ones ive been to my oh has done alot of time and my family work in jails also ive done so work there when i was on my degree never have i seen a mixed wing and only when on low cat or remand did they wear there own clothes!

Actually, it was a low catagory bit. So yes there was mixed prisoners. Perth is not a high security prison, and if you managed to read what prison I talked about you would know that. And btw, never once did I mention high catagory. I said my OH and the prisoners he was in with could mention their own clothes.
I will reitterate what I said. It was not the prisoners buying food or drink from the vending machines. It was their families and friends who came to visit. So they could buy as much as they wanted and the prioners tucked in during the visit and also took them back. Never once did I mention prisoners buying food for theirselves. Ever.
So no, what you were saying does not apply to any of my posts and you should read properly before you try and tell me different to what I experienced first hand.

And fyi, I was showing how lenient prisons can be. Low catagory prisoners were still wearing their own clothes. They had tv's with freeview and sky in their room. Ps3's got introduced to prisons. Gyms. Pool tables. Tv rooms etc.etc.
It doesn't matter that crime the person committed - they are in prison to be punished. Not lead a nice comfortable life with these luxuries. Prison should be prison. It should be no tv's, no games, no luxury of any sort. Ever. Regardless of the crime. That is what my post was referring to, before you told me it was wrong.

Doesn't sounds too bad...I could go there for awhile...have a little vacation! Geez....they have it better than many, don't they? Those who are poor struggle more.

Yeah they do. Sure they weren't murders or rapists etc. However, the did commit thefts, GBH, assault etc.etc. 'minor' crimes in the eyes of the law. But they did break the law, that's what I don't get. It doesn't matter what crime it is. All prisoners should be treated the same and none of them should have luxuries.

Well personally I think that murders, rapists, and those who cause physical damage to other human beings should be treated worse than people who steal etc, things that don't cause any real harm except for pennies lost ... not that anyone in jail should get luxuries...

Yeah I know what you mean. They should be treated worse. By treated the same I meant no luxuries for anyone, instead of "oh your crime is lesser than his, here have a tv" etc.

I agree with rubixcoyoob they have commited a crime, time in jail should be hard not easy
xx
