Hi Twinkles! Sure you can join!
I am taking Clomid because I had stopped ovulating, but RE's often give it to IUI ladies who have normal cycles because it helps you to develop more eggs and healthier eggs. Having more healthy eggs means more chances at conception, so it's a good thing. It does slightly up your chances of having twins, but it's not too bad.
Depending on why you are getting the IUI, Clomid can really make a difference in your success rate. If the reason you need an IUI is due to only anovulation, CM issues, cervical issues, or highly viscous semen, Clomid paired with IUI can raise the per cycle conception rate to 35%. Much higher than even a totally healthy couple in their 20's doing it the "old fashioned way"- that's only 20%. Out of the IUI women who get pregnant with the factors I just listed, there is a 1 in 10 chance of twins.
What factors have lead you to getting an IUI? If it's something like low sperm count, Clomid is definitely a good idea because it give swimmers more "targets".
Hi! I'm having an IUI done tomorrow! This is actually my second though. My first was in October. This time I did Clomid and Follistim. I also used the Ovidrel trigger. My U/S today showed 2 follies on each ovary, sizes 17, 17, 16, and 15.5! SO hopeful this month! We have unexplained infertility, though my cycles are frequently getting cancelled due to cysts so perhaps that is at least part of the problem. But I am praying that all goes well tomorrow!! I look forward to hearing how your cycles/IUIs go for each of you as well!
Twinkles: I know FSH but what is AMH? I would love to hear more about your journey so far when you get back to your computer! I think Clomid and IUI sounds like a great idea- but then again, I'm a little biased. I have no idea why ovulation spotting happens some months. I get it often, but definitely not every cycle. I've heard that some people think that it's due to a larger follicle rupturing, but I've also heard that it may just be a bigger estrogen surge, and then some people say it's just "something that happens". I guess it's one of those things there are no answers for.
My story: (Sorry this is so long. I still haven't figured out how to shorten the odd way my DH and I came to where we are...)
My DH and I started TTC last year in September. By February we still hadn't conceived so I decided to take FertilAid, not knowing that it can have adverse reactions in some women. What my RE thinks happened is that, up until that point, I had low level PCOS, but when I took the FertilAid (which contains Vitex), I had an adverse reaction and my PCOS went full blown. I gained a TON of weight (30lbs the first month alone!!) and my periods stopped and never came back. The FertilAid notes that it might disrupt cycles and cause weight fluctuations for the first few months while it regulated everything so I kept with it. After 3 months of no cycles I stopped using it. A week later I started spotting super heavy and that lasted for an entire month until I got in with my midwife and induce AF with Provera. Still, I didn't start O'ing again. My midwife suggested giving things time to sort themselves out, but when October came around and O still wasn't happening, she transferred me to an OB/Gyn. After a full battery of test (except PCOS screening!) They started me on Clomid.
At the same time, right before I stopped O'ing, DH went in to get his first SA done. We were about to hit 6 months of perfectly timed BD, so we figured he ought to just get everything checked out. All his numbers looked good, but his viscosity was a bit higher than they like to see. Depending on the guy, this can mean that many of the sperm can get trapped in the semen and not be able to make it to into the cervix. DH and I thought about getting in to an RE for an IUI then, but before we could do that, I stopped ovulating. The viscosity issue was one of those "maybe a problem" type things, so we were still a bit unsure about it all then.
So last month I did my first round of Clomid at 50mg and I did O, but no BFP. Since there was no monitoring of my cycles, things were a bit confusing. DH did his second SA and it still came back with a viscosity issue. And the BD'ing for a baby instead of for us was starting to wear on us.
All of that got us on the ball with switching to an RE. We weren't supposed to be able to get in until mid-December, but I called at the beginning of my cycle, told them about my concerns with not being monitored on Clomid, and the receptionist squeezed me in early!! We were thrilled!
This past weekend they finally finished all the PCOS testing. Turns out the Vitex in the FertilAid turned low level PCOS into really bad PCOS. However, I am thankful to have a diagnosis. They also found PCOS induced insulin resistance which I have probably had my whole life. I have always struggled terribly with my weight, so it is great to finally understand why. I was started on Metformin today to help regulate my insulin, and that will hopefully regulate my weight. I would be so happy!!
I'm also thrilled we're doing the IUI this cycle, not just because I think it will up our chances, but because it has been so good for my relationship with my husband. Not having to BD for babymaking has really, REALLY done wonders for our relationship. We are so much happier with each other, and he has become much more romantic and caring. All the TTC had really taken a toll on us!
Today was CD15 and I went in for my 3rd u/s of this cycle, but still no follies, just PCOS cysts. My RE said the 50mg just isn't oing to work this cycle, so he started me on 100mg a day of Clomid for five days starting today. I go in for my next u/s in a week.
