My GP says I have to have one next week as part of my 6 week check and I really really don't want to. I'm only 20 and thought you don't have to have one til you're 25  Does it change if you have a baby? I've had my cervical cancer jab less than three years ago so I'm hoping to avoid it. Do you think if I refuse my GP will be annoyed?

I didnt have one.. everyone said to me once youve had a baby you have to but my GP didnt say anything about it :flow: its your choice if you have it done, your GP shouldnt really be annoyed but just to respect what you want :) x

You can always refuse any medical service.

I had a smear test at my 6 week PP appointment, when I had my IUD inserted at 8 weeks PP, when I had my IUD 4 months after it was inserted and just recently when I had my IUD removed this month.

Does it hurt as much as when they do an internal when you're in labour? I'm dreading having one without the help of gas and air, it was bad enough with it!

Why would you not want one? It could save your life, yes they are a bit uncomfortable and yes they are a bit embarrassing but you've given birth/are going to give birth Which will be a lot worse!

I don't think so. It's not the most pleasant thing but I found it pretty easy.

Its not anywhere near an internal! But, they are worth it. I have been having them every year since I was 16 since my mom had cervical cancer. It's much better to find out early if something is wrong

I was told I would need a smear 4-6 months after having a baby, but I never got one and totally forgot about it until now! I thought people started getting them at 18? I can't even really remember..

I also didn't find internal checks while I was in labour that bad.. :haha:

Cos I still feel bruised from birth and the thought of anyone going near there makes me feel sick atm.

Wow you're brave I found them as bad as transition contractions :nope: I got told by the MW in the maternity ward that I wouldn't need one til I was 25 cos your cervix keeps changing til then anyway so they think you have abnormalities when you don't.

I had a smear and didn't find it painful.
It's definitely worth having as it could save your life

no my gp wont do them till 25 even when youve had a baby unless there sent to the lab by the hospital our pct lab just bins them as they dont get payed for under 25

I wasn't offered one... I wish I was! You can definitely refuse, but I would jump at the chance if I were you. Or if you're still feeling sore do you reckon you could ask to postpone it? xx

I was told I'd be offered one at my 6 week check but my GP didn't.
Bahh, she didn't even ask how I was lol, only checked Isla.
I'd want one, but you obvs don't have to get it done if you don't want it :) x

In Alberta it's mandatory for you to get a smear at your 6 week check. If you refuse your doctor can drop you as a patient. Personally I would get it because whats a few moments of being uncomfortable compared to your life and health..

It hurt less then when they checked my cervix when i was pregnant.

No I've not been offered one. My doctor though I might have been eligable because I'd had two kids, but then she checked and I'm NOT, not till I'm 25.

I had a smear my first check-up during pregnancy (I was 17), at 6 months pregnant, then again at my 6 week PP check up.

I have had a few as I have many stomach problems. I did have one at 4weeks PP but due to left over placenta & infection. I haven't had one since. They are only painfull if you are worried and tense up, it's over very quickly and if you feel uncomfortable at any point they will stop. x

Ive not been offered one.
Internals arent that bad though. I hadnt healed properly after the birth (6 months later!) so got referred to the hospital, i had 3 people shoving their hands up there at once trying to figure out what was wrong! It hurt because i was still sore but nothing unbearable. Dont worry about it :flower:

I think its routine to have it 6 weeks after birth, to make sure everything has gone back to normal...even if you had a c-section. I haven't had mine yet and Alexander is 4 months old. But that sbecause everytime my appointment comes up I have to cancell the smear because of bleeding, being really sick or not being able to make it because of car reasons or Alexander being sick :S
