Diet soda in pregnancy

They say not to drink diet sods, and I usually don't drink sodas at all, but when I have a craving I will take a sip of diet dr. pepper and then pour it out so I don't drink anymore of it.

It is the aspartame that you need to watch. A doctor friend of mine recommended 1-2 servings a week but I've just switched back to regular sodas instead (those still in moderation a few times a week) :)

As far as I'm aware there is no real research on the effects of aspartame on developing babies

I think if you were drinking 10 a day you should be concerned. I'm pretty sure 1 a day would be fine.

Sorry, I didn't read the posts above mine until after I wrote it. Now it doesn't make sense as I clearly have less knowledge then these ladies ^. I just really want it to be ok for me to have a diet coke.....haha

Based on available scientific literature, the American Pregnancy Association's official stance on artificial sweeteners is that aspartame (Equal) and sucralose (Splenda) are okay in moderation, so an occasional diet soda really is not a big deal. The one you definitely want to avoid is saccharin (Sweet'N'Low), but I don't think that's commonly used in sodas.

I'd say drink that diet coke :) lol
One a week will not hurt anything.
I'm guilty of putting 2 packs of splenda occasionally in my cereal cause I don't want to put a whole cup of sugar to make it sweet.

I got my list of "don'ts" from the doctor yesterday and soda's weren't on there......now it does say no SACCHARIN but splenda and nutrasweet were fine in moderation.

I have drank dt. soda's caffeine free and with caffeine with every one of my pregnancies and all my children are fine. I don't know if anything is good to do all day long or all the time but there is a lot worse that a person could be doing.

It's almost hard to believe that the population has managed to make it this far when now it seems almost everything could pose a threat or be a problem. Use your best judgment and try not to guilt yourself over every little thing!!!!

Happy and Healthy 9 to everyone!!!!

Oh sh*t. Is saccharin the same as sweetners (like Hermasetas - little white tablets that you use instead of sugar?) Im assuming so and I have 3 of them in every cup of tea that I drink (which is loads). My doctor never told me anything about not having it. Would I be best just having sugar then??

I honestly don't know anything about little white tablets. I think Sweet & Low has Saccharin and maybe Sugar Twin -which I used loads in previous pregancies... : ( The list is always changing and getting larger. Your tablet ingredients should let you know what is in them. Good Luck hun!!! Even if it says Saccharin I would try not to worry too much. Like I said, I've unknowingly used it in my tea in large amounts in previous pregnancies!!!

I do the same thing and according to my OB and everything I've read it's nothing to worry about. No need to feel guilty! In fact, my OB seemed much more concerned with making sure I knew to keep my sugar intake down than she did with artificial sweeteners.

I don't, but it's my choice. If it helps you, then go ahead.

1 is harmless, i wouldnt worry about it too much x
