This is going to sound so silly but what is the difference between the fresh bottled milk that you buy from the supermarket which is stored in the fridge and the milk that you get in cartons not stored in the fridge?...i just don't get it?

:blush: x

It is to do with how hot the milk is treated at. Here is what the food standards agency say;

What is the difference between pasteurised and UHT milk?
Most milk we buy in the UK is pasteurised. Milk is pasteurised by heating it, usually to 71.7°C for 15 seconds. This gets rid of any food poisoning bacteria in the milk and reduces the bacteria that make milk go off. So pasteurising milk makes it safer to drink and makes it last longer.

UHT stands for 'ultra heat treated'. UHT milk, also called long-life milk, has been heated to at least 135°C for at least one second. This destroys all bacteria in the milk and makes it last much longer than ordinary pasteurised milk. UHT tastes different to other milk because of the high temperatures used when it's treated.

You can buy unpasteurised milk in some places. Because it hasn't been heat-treated, unpasteurised milk can contain bacteria that could cause food poisoning. Young children, elderly people, pregnant women and people who are ill should avoid unpasteurised milk.

Remember to follow the storage instructions on all types of milk.

Fresh milk is not pasteurized, which means it spoils more quickly and has more bacteria in it -- some people are just fine drinking farm fresh milk because they're used to it, but for someone to go from carton milk to farm fresh milk you should probably expect an upset tummy at first..

How weird that they keep milk out of the fridge lol. In Canada our milk is all pasteurized and kept in the fridge, even at the grocery store.. and it is actually illegal I think to sell unpasteurized "fresh milk"... a farmer just went to court bc he had been selling it to the public (beat the charges though).

all that aside fresh milk is drinkable and carton uht milk tastes proper cack

Here fresh milk is pasteurised, she is talking about milk kept in the fridge as 'fresh'. The reason she is calling UHT carton is that it isnt in a bottle like the refrigerated milk but a carton like juice. UHT that is kept out of the fridge is also treated (pasteurised) even more so. I dont think we are allowed to sell unpasteurised here either.

Oooo i didnt know that, thanks guys! Think il stay away from carton milk! x
