Differences: US vs UK

Hi, iv not read the hole thread so sorry if this has been said but I think fanny pack is hilarious it's a bum bag on the uk
Oh n thongs are flip flops
I have american cousins and we have some very funny conversations and arguments over spellings eg colour x

Yeah, when I heard someone in a shoe store, when I was younger, say something about "thongs" I blushed!! Hehe, here they are flip flops for the most part, but we all know what it means now. Thongs, relatively speaking, is a very small undergarment lol And I do looooove accents!! :shy: any really. I'm from Tennessee, so I am verrry southern & it shows. When I went to Washington DC years ago I felt that I stuck out like a sore thumb!!!

I'm from Dundee in Scotland and now live in Angus (about 15 miles away from Dundee) and they talk totally differently here. this website has sound clips of people speaking Scots from the different areas of Scotland and I can understand the Dundee one just fine, but really struggle to understand the Angus one

i can understand the Angus one fairly well :haha: maybe this is my hidden talent?

Love this thread!! I love different we all are :D

But i cant believe how many flavours of pop tarts theyre are!! I had NO i dea i thought they only made 2! :haha: Sooo gonna be buying some on amazon now thanks to whoever posted that link :haha:

Love all the different words for things

jam / jelly
hen night / bachelorette
trousers / pants
holiday / vaccation
flat / apartment
toilet / bathroom

And also spellings aswell lol

mum / mom
colour / color
centre / center

And i always wondered about smores?? and grahem crackers?? :S

i'm gobsmacked at the pop tart flavours, i want the hello kitty ones

I once posted a thread about accents on here too maybe you want to dig it out, it has a website where anybody reads out the same sentence so you can perfectly hear the difference in accents.

Here it is

I could understand the Orkney, Shetland and Fife ones if I concentrated... the rest were lost on me! :haha:

I don't know if this is all over the UK.. But I have family over in Holland and instead of giving you Ketchup with your Fries (chips) they give you Mayonaise.. And since I've gone to Holland and spent summers there I got so use to asking for Mayo that now in the US people look at me strange because I don't like Ketchup and I rather have Mayo on my "Chips" (fries) lol lol I love it.

yes!! My husband's best friend is from Belgium, and he learned how they dip the fries in mayo! I even do it now from time to time. Yum!

tallybee i didnt even get served lol! The man looked at me in a strange way and asked 'what do you want' when i explained to him i wanted a pack of ciggies he asked for ID. I had none as i was too young. I think they may be a lot stricter out in the US on age restrictions etc but me thinkin its the same in the uk, because when i was 16 you could legally buy ciggies in the uk when i turned 17 in the uk they changed the law lol. x

Ah yes, I remember my trips to Europe before I turned 21... had plenty of cigs and booze, no carding lol

And yup everything is oversized here. I lived in Spain for a while, and it was culture shock when I came home... everything looked so BIG. Especially the cars.

I've never liked ketchup, so when I was in The Netherlands and they gave me mayo, I was one of the happiest people ever! I love mayo on my fries.

I love mayo on chips!

After watching TV last night, I would say a difference is the amount of drive thrus etc but I guess America has more land, oh and portion sizes!

I was watching something called diners drive ins and dives. OMG the portion sizes were immense!! I would like to try an American lemon meringue pie though, so much yummy cream lol!!
