Do you think that hospitals should provide formula milk?

Then everyone should take their own food and all drinks to hospital Maisiemoo!

I wonder is the issue here really about saving money for the NHS or is it about formula?

As no one seems to be opposed to the idea of everyone else recieving meals in hospital? Just formula

Makes no sense to me...unless this IS a FF v's BF debate after all....

In the USA they supply formula to formula feeding moms...but then we pay for everything no matter what. Formula you use, diapers you use, everything. But no arguments as its there for us if its needed.

Great point
What was the intro to this thread again?? This isnt a BF v FF debate... opps! :haha: :dohh:
Lets just face it.. we all pay in to the system, we all take something out at some pointin our lives... lets just get over it and have a group hug :hugs:

Funnily enough, I used to take my own sleeping bag (as advised to) when my daughter spent time in the childrens ward.

In my mind, if you can take your own nappies, wipes etc then you can take your own formula (if that's how you planned to feed your baby). It's totally different if something happens and formula becomes a need. To just take it just because it's there is wrong in my opinion. The money can be put to a better use.

But thats my point, IF they decide not to provide it then everyone will
take their own, they would have no choice. But while they do provide
it most people will use it, It is provided like meals are for the mothers,
its not there as an emergency thing, if it was we would be told to take
our own if we were planning on FF, and then it would only be used for
emergencies like you said. But as it stand at the moment, they provide
it free of charge. If you are not happy about that, i suggest you write
to the manager of the board instead of complaining about it on here and
suggesting that people are taking advantage of them suppling it free.
Nothing is going to change if 1 or 2 people decide to take their own,
the formula hospitals provide has already been bought, in very large bulk
quanities and is there to be used, same as hospital food/toilet paper/
bedsheets ect.

tbh id rather have took my own bottles when i had Sydnee, she needed to be fed little & often & the midwives would only let me have 1 bottle at a time, then when Syd would be hungry they would take ages (litterally 40 minutes one day) to get me another bottle, so she would be too tired to feed when she eventually got it. :growlmad:

Nestle provided free formula milk at hospitals in Africa. Great?

- The mothers did not even try to bf.
- After they got released from the hospital, they had to pay for the for the formula (which probably was the intention to begin with).
- Very often, the mothers could not afford the expensive formula milk, and they could not get back to bf.
- So, they fed less formula than the babies needed which led to malnutrition in many cases.

Besides that, I still think that no formula milk will ever be better or as good as breastfeeding. The milk of a mother changes its ingredients when the child is sick, or starts to crawl, there are even differences between the milk you bf in the morning and at night.

So basically, I find that hospitals should rather encourage women to bf than provide free formula milk. I don't care really if they would give it to the mothers for free in case they chose to not bf, or didn't even start to bf. What I guess would be important to consider is, that women who bf should not end up being the ones with the disadvantages when they need a breast pump or something.

I agree

I cant believe this thread is approaching 50 pages! And I'm only on 19 so will take a while to catch up.

Although I do think it should be free for various reasons I wouldn't have a problem paying for it providing if I had had a crappy labour someone would be there to assist me in making up bottles. I don't see why so many people would have an issue bringing their own, surely if you plan to FF from the start you already have a few tubs stocked up? I know we did.

Off to carry on reading...

As i said right at the begining of this thread my LO would most likely have died if Formula wasn't around!. I went into hospital with the sole intension of BF, but if i had stuck to my guns and said no formula he wouldn't be here now because BF wouldn't have saved him!. So not always the best!

ohhh nail hit straight on head - IT IS ABOUT FORMULA!!!! X

](*,)lets not start the nestle debate again it all ends in tears, the whole ff v bf debate is a completely pointless argument

But its not about whether the NHS supplies meals for mothers and other patients and therefore should supply a meal for the baby. It's about you as the mother, bringing in all the supplies that you know you will need for your baby, hat, vest, sleep suit, mittens, nappies, wipes, and (oh yeah, as I know I'll be FF from birth as thats what I've decided to do), formula.
No one has said that it shouldn't be available if medically needed, or in the event of a mother who is intending on BF'ing, having problems and her baby needing feeding.
But lets face it, there are hundreds of women who make the choice, while they are pregnant, that for whatever reason, they DO NOT WANT to BF. You see it on this forum alone almost every day that some mothers never had the intention of BF'ing. or after struggling with BF'ing for a first baby, won't bother trying with a second and will go straight to FF.
So WHY should the NHS (or any other countries medical system) foot the bill for those people?

:argh:

It shouldnt make any flaming difference!!!!!! its a food for a BABY ... not the mother...

It's not light reading.

and as a mother, you should be responsible for providing that food for YOUR baby, however that may be, Not relying on someone else to do it for you.

I think they should as the baby is a patient but tbh I wouldn't care if they didn't. It's hardly expensive.

I only read the first couple of comments and saw a reply from someone saying BF or FF is mothers choice no matter what people think. Well it wasn't for me!

Didn't read further as I know it probably turned into a debate on BF v FF
