Do you think that hospitals should provide formula milk?

I still don't understand why people expect people to provide for YOUR baby  I didn't expect breastpads, lansinoh and nursing bras did I? Or a pump.

My hospital provided breastpads and a pump if you needed them

Does anyone know what it actually does cost the nhs to provide it?

imo yes of course it should be provided, as soon as baby is born he is a patient and should be fed while he is in hospital the same as every other patient.

I've been trying to figure this out. Some women go home after 6hrs, others after 2 or 3 days (and obviously some longer).

So lets say the average stay is 2 days and the baby has 8 feeds a day - so 16 bottles of formula. Based on 80,000 babies being born a year (as someone posted on this thread) and at a retail cost of 57p - that is £730,000.

Now obviously not all mothers FF from birth and the hospital most certainly won't pay retail price - in fact one lady who has worked in hospitals has said that some manufacturers provide it to the hospital free of charge!

 i'd still never expect them. my baby so I'll pay for her stuff.

...... so because I didn't want to bf when my son was born he should go hungry at the hospital or I should have to pay for him to eat when every other patient there eats for free????? Am I missing something here???? This can't be serious

Who said he should go hungry?

Yes other patients eat for free but then they dont have a alternative do they?

You know, I'm not even going to get sucked into this 'debate' anymore. IMO it's crazy. I didn't BF, I didn't want to, had no intention to and will never BF. End of. So no, my son had no other alternative than formula.

ok....and thats fine

So why wouldnt you be willing to pay for it?

oh and please note

We used those bottles but i dont see why it would be a big issue to pay for them :dohh:

Because both myself and my husband work and pay taxes. We don't and never have claimed benefits and I'm damned sure if my baby needed food after his birth that I wouldn't be paying AGAIN for it. I pay into a system where every bum and his wife seems to get everything handed to them on a plate for nothing and my baby is grudged a a couple of bottles of formula all bcause I didn't bf. Get real!

<<<< ducking out now... just another BF v FF thread imo... :ignore:

Bathbabe - I'm not questioning the equality of the choice, what I'm saying is that some sort of balance needs to be achieved between your right as a parent to choose to FF/BF and the impact it has on a struggling NHS service. Lets say you are poor, you are in receipt of free second hand clothing but you reject it and request brand new ones. (Sorry not the best analogy lol) but I hope you get what I mean. It doesn't seem right when there's so many obvious areas of higher need within the NHS.

So do you expect free nappies? clothes? at the hospital too?

If you choose to formula feed then why shouldnt you pay for it?

I know..... absolute load of CRAP!

Okay last post, lol. I respect your voice to an opinion and stuff but you seem to be so rude and condescending in all your posts. Just because it's a different opinion to yours, doesn't make it CRAP or 'tosh'

I do believe this debate can be had without it turning into an FF vs BF debate if people maintain a level of objectivity.

Well put me on ignore and give yourself peace then  Whilst we are on the subject of rude and condescending.. have you read any of your own posts??? All I'll say is be carefull not to hurt yourself when you fall off that high horse!

Why is this BF vs FF?

I think it would be crazy not to provide any formula and make women make up bottles from scracth but really cant see the issue with paying for the bottles?

NG09, aren't you kind of contradicting yourself? Complaining about people's snf of entitlement and in the next breath demanding free formula..

my hospital provides it, first time around i used their formula but this time around i didnt as i BF. i think it would be to much hassle for the parents and the staff if you had to take bottles, steriliser and formula. The staff would be rushed off their feet helping people sterilse and all the other things instead of doing ward rounds! Thats just my opinion though

LADIES!!! :nope::nope::nope:

Dans just lost his job so were in the scroungers catogory by the looks of it

I agree with the person who said id rather formula than methodone provided in hostpitals.

I did breast feed for 8 weeks so i didnt need any formula in hostpital however in wolverhampton it is free to those who do.

Dont really apriciate I WORK I PAY TAXES,why does that always need to be added??

Yeah you work well done,i currently sitting with a distraught OHcrying because he feels like he cant provide for his family so to those who think we dont have any right to help think about what your saying?

Oscar gets "free milk" as hes lactose intollerent and we are now going to be claming benefits, which is horrible but i have no problem taking off a goverment who have taken off us and who will contnue to do so to line there vile pockets.
