I agree with the person who said id rather formula than methodone provided in hostpitals.

I did breast feed for 8 weeks so i didnt need any formula in hostpital however in wolverhampton it is free to those who do.

Dont really apriciate I WORK I PAY TAXES,why does that always need to be added??

Yeah you work well done,i currently sitting with a distraught OHcrying because he feels like he cant provide for his family so to those who think we dont have any right to help think about what your saying?

Oscar gets "free milk" as hes lactose intollerent and we are now going to be claming benefits,which is horrible but i have no problem taking off a goverment who have taken off us and who will contnue to do so to line there vile pockets.

If you make the choice then you're more than aware that formula isn't free.

Yes for the most part I think they are funded by the NHS and thats where it confuses me. They have this big agenda to push BFing but still give out free formula. I said in an earlier post I think its in their best interest to do this as it keeps FF companies thriving and taxes coming in, sort of like cigarette companies (not comparing!)

I don't really care what they want TBH, my body, my baby, my choice. I'm sure they prefer to see happy babies and happy mummy's at the end of the day, is that not what truly matters?

It's a difficult one... on one hand I can see why it's fair enough to have to pay... on the other I agree we pay our taxes and a few bottle of formula are fair enough to expect in return. It should always be free for people who need it due to Bf problems in hospital though.
My hospital gave out free formula but also free things for BF like lanosil (can't remember how to spell it), breast pads etc so there was stuff for everybody whether BF or FF as well as neutral things like maternity pads.
Maybe the fairest thing is to charge for formula but also not to provide things for BF or neutral things like maternity pads either. Maybe a vending machine of some sort providing these things at cost price on the ward would be fair? That way you could easily get hold of them if you need them.

Ok, well im willing to bet my 4days worth of formula doesnt cost as much as an hour with a lactation specialist

(Not aimed at you) why are you willing to begrudge formula to some mummys but im assuming the majority of you would happily jump at the chance to get help with bf? Ff mummys need help too even if its only for a few hours or days after birth

imo yes of course it should be provided, as soon as baby is born he is a patient and should be fed while he is in hospital the same as every other patient.

I've been trying to figure this out. Some women go home after 6hrs, others after 2 or 3 days (and obviously some longer).

So lets say the average stay is 2 days and the baby has 8 feeds a day - so 16 bottles of formula. Based on 80,000 babies being born a year (as someone posted on this thread) and at a retail cost of 57p - that is £730,000.

Now obviously not all mothers FF from birth and the hospital most certainly won't pay retail price - in fact one lady who has worked in hospitals has said that some manufacturers provide it to the hospital free of charge!

yes, this is why i was wondering! I really don't think that the arguments about how much its costs the nhs and the money should be spent elsewhere etc hold at all when the true cost is not actually known anyway

No I don't think hospitals should provide formula. We are very lucky to have free healthcare in this country but I don't like the mentality where people think they are "entitled" to something just because they have paid taxes, that isn't how it works. The NHS is short of money and personally I would prefer that money to be spent medical essentials rather than buying formula that parents have chosen to feed their babies. Nature has provided babies with free food. Obviously hospitals do need to have some formula available for unexpected situations, but generally I think that parents should provide their own.

Yip, I don't think my overnight stay and about 3 bottles of milk would have caused the collapse of the NHS. So if the concern is the cost to the NHS and not a problem that some of you appear to have with FF then why not get rid of lactation specialists etc and if you need help pay for it??

Regarding the cost of lactation specialists, that's a slightly different issue as breastfeeding actually saves the NHS a lot of money in the long run due to health issues. I can't remember how many millions it's estimated to be off the top of my head, but certainly more than enough to cover the cost of breastfeeding advice and support.
