Does anyone else think £600 - £800 is a bit steep for a pram?! ** update last page **

I havent the frikken foggiest, I've only had it out once and its got a digital gauge on the handles, will have a look and update!

I have got myself the silver cross sleepover, I know so early, but it was one that both DH and I agreed on, and I liked the big carrycot for when tiny, and it seems really sturdy and easy to push (in the shop) , I managed to get it on Ebay for £250, and it is emaculate. Our budget realistically would have been £400 tops, even if I get the car seat (which I am not sure about yet), I have still come under. I would not have been able to justify spending almost £200 more than the freeway on essentially a moses basket, it is mind boggling...

I can't tell the difference!

I just went on the silver cross website and I can't tell the difference between the sleepover and the freeway!

Is it because it can be used with the stand as moses basket? (you can do the with the freeway too is you buy the stand seperately)

BTW, I don't know if you saw the ventura car seat in the store, but it is great. It gets brilliant reviews for the baby's seating position, even from birth. Plus it clicks onto the base really easily too  And it is supposed to be from birth -> 12 months (obviously that would depend on the length of the baby's legs though).

The sleepover has the carrycot lining and mattress and moses basket stand, but yeah, they are essentially the same.

I'm not sure about the car seat as one of the reasons I opted for the sleepover is because of the cot, I cringe when suspecting that babies have been in their car seats for hours (just my own opinion, not one set out to cause a debate), and am not sure whether I will justify the use of the 'travel system' however, have not done that much searching for the reviews tbh and I was impressed with the size of it when I was able to see it from where we got the pram, in the shops it always has the hood and foot muff on and looks tiny... am leaving the car seat shopping for a little while longer!! :)

yes!! there is no need to spend that much, unless u really wont to. u can get a good one for 400 which is about how much we are going to spend. my sister brought the bugaboo for 700 and i think its the uglist thing ive seen. Its like with designer clothes just cos there expensive does not mean they look good!! ALL prams are safe as they have to be to be sold, they will have a logo on them which means theyve passed satisfactory standards. with my daughter last time i ended up spending 800 cos we brought one from mamas and papas for 600 and i hated it, it was huge, and pissed me off, so i went to mothercare and brought another one for 200 and i loved it!!she used it all the way through to 3yrs, its still in the shed now. buy to your means, u dont have to be flash!!

I guess if you can afford it then why not spend it .... However, we are on a tight budget and I have got a nearly new Mothercare car seat and pram/buggy from freecycle for free. I have also looked on ebay too but luckily I got mine for free with loads of extras too.

Hi hun, you should always buy a new carseat and mattress. Everything else is fine 2nd hand but you dunno if the carseat has been in an accident

I think some of the prices are shocking, I really do. And I don't think the argument "what's better than spending your money on your baby?" actually holds any water, because you aren't spending money on the baby, you're just buying "stuff". How many people do you see on here who are on their 2nd, 3rd, 4th pram?!

Your baby needs something secure and comfortable, and you need something practical that can fit into your car (if you drive). That's all. The brand doesn't matter, the colour doesn't matter, the price tag doesn't matter.

Half of the people I know who have really expensive prams bought them for the same reason that they bought designer handbags, because they're showing off  It is just how some people live. Personally I find it really embarrassing to watch them.

You see the same on here, the ones who want the designer prams are the same ones who want the designer nappy bags  Complete waste of money IMO.

Sure, I can afford £1000+ for a pram, but do I think it is justified? Not a chance.

Same with spending more than £300 on a cot, what is the point? Or kitting out the nursery in baby sized furniture which will only last a couple of years before the hanging rails are too short. Why would you waste all that money?!

There are far more valuable ways to spend your money than overpriced baby kit, if you really want to invest in the child put the money into savings for it's education.

It is obviously a personal choice where you have to balance what you can afford to spend versus what you think the product is actually worth. If you have a fixed budget you decide where the money will be best spent, for me that means saving on the travel system so I can buy an Angelcare monitor.

I think it is one story of the pram is amazing quality and gets wonderful reviews, but quite another if it just looks nice and you want it because it is the most popular or because famous people have it!

I found that entire post VERY rude and judgemental.

^^^ she says it is everyones personal choice but that is her opinion.... whats wrong with that, each to their own and surely that is to be respected... which she has done...

oh my life! i am spending that much on EVERYTHING i need! my pram is a travel system and its £116!!!

It doesn't really matter that she put a disclaimer at the end  Implying that I don't care about my childs education or something because I bought an expensive pram is ridiculous.

I'm pretty sure she's talking about the people that just base it solely on looks and brand name as she said. If that's you then.. I guess you would take that post personally.

Otherwise I saw nothing wrong with her post.

We work hard to be able to buy luxuries like expensive prams. I would never buy a pram that looks good but has poor reveiws. I don't understand why the amount someone spends on a pram bothers them?!

I saw one with a digital gauge today, it looked so cool , the pram was a relatively good price too..x

hi girls
sorry for being silly but what pram have you got the linear freeway or the sleepover ? The sleepover is the more expensive one isnt it ? how much did you pay for it ? thanks sorry for all the questions xx

As if anyone is gonna buy an ugly pram. I must be 'showing off' right enough because I want a sleek, pretty pram. I'm so embarassing, my OH must completely cringe when he's out with us.

Why is it embarssing to watch people who have worked hard for their money spend it on nice things?

Ever heard of live within your means? If your on £10,000 a year then sure spending £600 on a buggy is a silly idea, but if your on £40,000 a year it wouldnt even make a dent.

Oh and most people who can afford expensive buggies can afford to put money away for their children. Its like your saying people are wasting their money when it could be better spent elsewhere, how do you know what each and every family spends their money on and how much they have?

Sorry but i agree with Blah, judgemental and pretty offensive to imply that people would rather buy something for the sake of status whilst they cant provide for their childs future ...

I think this is what they could mean hun..im not sure though

It looks very nice...

You said nothing offensive what so ever so don't worry :hugs:

I dont think anyones said anything offensive, I think everyones got their own opinions and I think ann wasnt aiming directly at anyone else. Thats just what some people do - want something because everyone else has it, brand etc - regardless of reviews etc.

I cant begin to tell you how people told me to buy a certain make of pram" because all the other ones werent great and EVERYONE has this pram"

When asked what pram i bought i honestley felt like I couldnt tell them. I even posted a thread in third tri because I wasnt in the 'in crowd'

I think that it's all relative to your budget and requirements.

Having tested prams for Mother & Baby Magazine I can tell you that when you pay a high price tag for a pram it's usually the design expertise you pay for as much as the quality of the product. So yes a pram may have a big price tag but there is a reason. I've tested a full range of prams with price tags from under £200 to £900 and there is a world of difference between them as products and 8 times out of 10 the more they cost the better they do the job.

I think most people tend to buy what they can afford and try to get the best for their particular budget be that £50 or £1000. :)

So in response to the OP, no I dont think it's too much to spend....so long as your fridge isnt empty ;)
