I don't get any help with childcare costs. Hubby works full time and i'm part time. We met a couple at the weekend at a childrens party and they mentioned that sure start pay their childcare costs and they both work full time!! Their income would definitely be more than ours! Does anyone else get it paid?

I was wondering how they decide who gets help with childcare too.is it done based on your income or your total number of hours?!

Child Tax Credit (CTC)
This is paid into the bank account of the main carer - the person mainly responsible for looking after the children. Families on incomes of up to £58,000 a year (or £66,000 a year if there is at least one child who is less than a year old) can benefit from the new CTC whether or not they are working. This money acknowledges and supports the cost of bringing up children.

Childcare element of Working Tax Credit (WTC)
To apply for the childcare element of WTC:

•lone parents must work at least 16 hours a week
•both members of a couple must work 16 hours a week or more
•or one member of a couple must work 16 hours a week or more and the other member must be incapacitated.
Parents must also use one of the following types of qualifying childcare:

•care registered by Ofsted, for example childminders, nannies, nurseries, activity clubs, playschemes or out-of-school clubs
•care provided outside of school hours, by a school on the school site
•carers approved on the Childcare Approval Scheme (CAS)
•an approved foster carer, unless the child is the foster carer's foster child
•a domiciliary worker or nurse from a registered agency providing care in the child's home.

It looks like it's total income based. working tax credit goes to paying child care. They may also get childcare vouchers from their employers which is a tax and NI free way of contributing to the cost of care from the salary.

nothing is as good as it seems!

Do you know if the childcare element of WTC is a fixed amount or does it vary depending on income?!

depends on income..... if yuo look on direct.gov.uk I think there is an online calculator

OH works FT and I work PT although I will be going FT shortly. We pay approx £150 pw for our childminder (OH works shifts so Ellis is only there 50% of the contracted time) and CTC covers a majority of this.

I did some calculations at the weekend and doesnt look like I will get help with childcare :(

We don't either - we get the basic amount of child tax credit but nothing for the childcare element. I think it's ridiculous really, we both work full time but don't earn much really and they don't take in to account whether you have a mortgage or anything. My parents have to help towards childcare as we just don't earn enough to cover our outgoings.

Did they specify what childcare help they get? Was it by any chance childcare vouchers??

We both work full time and aren't entitled to child tax credits. We're completely on our own and childminders are £6ph here (£60 per day we're looking at)...money doesn't go far when you have mortgage, bills, 2 cars to run etc.

My oh's parents have offered to childmind one day a week for us,but the nursery we are looking at is cheaper to pay for a full 5 day week than to pay for 4 individual days  both ways are expensive and leaves me with not alot of money at the end of the month!!it hardly makes it worth it leaving your child all week just to bring a few extra pounds in!!

I know what you mean, it doesn't encourage you to go back to work does it. I finish in the summer for maternity leave and be using all my annual leave beforehand so will be taking Grace out of nursery to save some money (it goes up in the summer holidays!).

Can you see if your OH's employer would register with a childcare voucher scheme such as BusyBees?

Here is a link via Busybees childcare https://www.computersharevoucherservices.com/Pages/default.aspx

My work offer the childcare voucher scheme and you can pay up to £240 per month into it, it has to be the same amount each month, and you cant change the amount you pay - but, i dont know if that is the law - or my work policy, however, on £240, i would be saving around £60 in tax and NI, so i really should get around to filling out the forms!

You and/or your partner cant pay more than £243 per child in vouchers - its law

Oh wow, thats alot more than I thought!!my OH hasnt got a scheme to pay into with his employer (its only a small business) so I would be putting all the money away.
Thanks ladies
