Hi does anyone have either breed? I would love some more info on them. Are they good with kids, how much exercise etc?. We are hoping too be getting a puppy and I have always wanted either of these breeds but after reading up on them I am wondering if they will be right for us. I work 2 days a week but im hoping my OH will be able too take the dog too work with him on these days. Thanks in advance x:flower
My eldest Toby is 5 and Sam is 3 x

Yep my mum has a labradoodle - firstly I know they are supposed to be good for owners with allergies because they supposedly don't malt but that is absolute bullshit, our labradoodle malts sooooooo much! I think maybe I won't give the best advice because personally I think my mum and her partner didn't do a great job of training him but their labradoodle needs a lot of exercise otherwise he goes really nuts, and he isn't great with Ivy at all because he is an extremely nervous dog. I know poodles aren't great family dogs anyway and their labradoodle is predominately poodle which may have something to do with it too? They are gorgeous though!

Not sure what a goldendoodle is, but if its a golden retriever cross poodle you would be more lucky with this than the other i would think.

I have never had either of these personally but have had many dogs and can safely say my golden retriever was the best family dog ever! So calm and loving plus patience of a saint!

Biggest advice i can give you though is take whatever dog you get to classes as soon as possible, those early lessons and socialisation is key to a happy future especially if you havent had much experience with dogs.

Good Luck

I have not owned either breed, but I have worked with them on many occasions, and from what I can tell, they are EXTREMELY hyper. They loved to jump around like maniacs (even after long walks) and did not listen very well (if at all). This could have easily been controlled by proper training, but it seems they take more work than a Labrador Retriever or Golden Retriever would because of the Poodle mix, and require A LOT of exercise.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I think I will have too reconsider what dog we get. My mum and brother have just each got a little shihtzu puppy each and they are lovely but I would like a bigger dog for us. Thanks again x

My best friend has one and he's huge! Think Great Dane size. They weren't expecting it so came as quite a shock!

He's great with my LO but so hyper and needs lots of walks!

Don't pay the ridiculous prices breeders charge for what isn't even pure bred. Check your rescues/shelters I bet there's loads of them as they've become very popular x

I had a chocolate labradoodle puppy called Brian, he was very hyper, which I expected as a puppy, but unfortunately he jumped too much and hanged himself on my cupboard handle by his collar on Xmas day at 14 weeks old

Please please don't use a collar on your dog whatever you choose to have.

Brian was a lovely dog and I wish someone had warned us about the risk of hanging by collars so my ex hubby wouldn't have to go through the trauma of finding him hanging on Xmas day

Hi my mum told me too try my local rescue centre as well so I will definately look into that. Thank you x

I second the shelter idea. My dog was a kijiji dog (like Craigslist ect) under the 'To Give Away' we took our time waiting until a dog that interested us came up, researched the breeds he was made up of and went to go see him before we decided.
He was eight months old, full grown and when we pulled up he was with the owners on the front lawn, unchained and didn't run up to the car but when we got out he came over to see us but didn't jump or bark.
My dog is half German Sheppherd, half lab. The owners son got him as a puppy and had to make back home due a job loss and he was being kennelled over 9 hours a day. His name was Hank and we kept it and he is seriously, seriously, the BEST dog ever. So good with kids and people and doesn't even really need a leash. He's a part of our family and we helped another family that knew it wasn't providing the right life. Can't imagine life without him.

That is so sad  collars in the house can be so dangerous :( none of mine wear collars (only on walks) even though 2 live outside in custom kennels. Even the break away collars don't always work :(

I strongly dislike goldendoodles. The family I nannied for got one as a small puppy and it was INSANELY hyper. Even when it grew up huge it was still crazy hyper. It constantly bit (playing but still bit hard) the two year old on the hands and legs and he had bite marks all over. She would bite my foot straight through my shoes (OW!). When she had to be crated she yapped the entire time she was in there. Very loudly. Always jumping around being a nuisance. I just couldn't stand that dog. One thing I don't miss about that job. Thats only my opinion on them based on my one experience , lol.

I must totally and completely agree!

Those dogs are mutts that have been labeled "designer breeds". Is there anything wrong with them? No, absolutely not!! But I hate hearing about these "breeds" being sold and at exceptionally high prices.

I've always been told by numerous breeders (and online forums) to never have collars on your dogs when they are home alone. Your very sad experience unfortunately is not the first time that has happened. :(

LOL I can only imagine the crazy names people would make of that mix!

Ive got a chocolate Lab x Dalmation and shes stunning. Couldn't of asked for a better breed to have been brought up with my girls she loves us all. I take her to agility classes on a Friday night which we both love. My OH did talk about getting a Labradoodle but the Poodle mix of the breed put me off what with having the kids. I think maybe a family with older kids not with young kids unless you can go to puppy/dog training classes.Ive had my Chloe since she was 7 weeks old and she will be 6 next month so shes been brought up with my girls. She misses them when they are not here and my partner says when me and the kids go out she mopes around the house til we get back. Shes a sweetheart. Down side she very stubborn, eats pooand has selective hearing lol! Shes so soppy and laid back its unreal. My house wouldn't be the same with out her:cloud9:

Well she is all mastiff so guess I could tout her as purebred

Hi , the prices that people are asking for these fancy crosses is astounding! I've had pedigree dogs and I've had cross breeds and have found my crosses to be just as wonderful as the pedigrees if not better in some respects. We've just recently had to put our old boy to sleep only because old age had caught up with him in the last 6 months of his life he was a Great Dane x German shepherd he cost me £50 nearly 13 years ago and was the most beautiful natured boy, I also have a St Bernard x Irish wolfhound girl who is 4 years old and again is such a soft loving girl she cost £365 but was bought as a birthday present, I suppose what I'm trying to say is that if your lucky with a cross breed you get the best of both breeds but don't be duped into paying a fortune for one because they might have an anti-allergy coat , have seen some going for nearly £1000 which is just crazy! You have to choose a dog to suit your life my girl is happy with a quick burst of energy where she bombs around and then settles into a happy plod , I would be a useless owner for a dog with high energy! Ooops sorry for the long post but hth :winkwink:
