how many of you have had an alcoholic drink whilst pregnant?? as of yet i have not had any at all, what is everyones views on this subject. if you have had drink what have you had???

When I found out I was pregnant, around 2nd week of July (was about 5 weeks then), I have had a few glasses of wine a week and the day before. I was a little concerned at that time but the doctor said that it was fine so long as I don't drink anymore. So I haven't had a drop since finding out.

But you know, I heard that dr's in Europe tend to be a little less strict than those in the US in that it's been said it's ok to drink a glass of wine every once in a while. I tell my OH I think dr's in the US are more conservative on this because this is a more litigious country and they can get sued left and right if anything should happen

So I think it's really a personal decision. Most conservative is not to drink any at all, of course, but I also don't see how a glass of wine once in a while can really hurt so long as you don't overdo it. Me personally, I'm just a worrywart so as not to stress over it, I just don't

I've not drank, but thats for other reasons.

With everything else that might be a risk, I choose to avoid. Not because it might do any harm, but because if there is something wrong with the baby, I know I'd beat myself up about it. If I don't do anything 'wrong' then I hope I won't feel as awful, if there is something wrong. Hope that makes sense!

rames exactly right lol drs in the US are definitely NOT supporters of drinking AT ALL in pregnancy. I don't anyway and haven't ever since :witch: was a day late. cause i knew it was a HUGE possibility that i was pregnant

iv had a shandy since i found out but there was only a tiny amount ov beer in it, i had it as i craved it. i heared a glas ov wine a week is good for you but i couldnt stomach it anyway.

MMmmmmmmmm shandy.... I would love one right about now!

I will refrain though! Hey it takes just as long to write 'of' as it does 'ov' it's no shorter lol!
:hugs:

In Canada as well its advised not to drink at all during pregnancy, so I haven't. My doc was saying that there is no way to know exactly how much can cause harm as it's doing an ethical study on that isn't really possible.

I also learned at my prenatal classes that you shouldn't even drink while breastfeeding, as the baby's liver isn't able to metabolize it, and it just keeps coursing through the baby's body. It's suspected to be one of the causes for ADD.

Okay.. so in Canada at almost every bar/restaurant they have a sign up about drinking alcohol during pregnancy being risky, HOWEVER... I had heard that it's okay to have one glass of wine per week and my boyfriend's step-cousin drinks wine still. My grandma gives me a hard time about not drinking the wine at church, being that it's "the blood of Jesus Christ" and all lol soo I spoke to my doctor about it, not because I really miss it or anything but just to help me sort out fact and fiction.

She says that while everyone agrees that excessive alcohol consumption during pregnancy is dangerous and has negative side effects for the child, and that you can't drink while breastfeeding, they believe a small amount may be safe they just can't decide on how small of an amount.

Personally I'm not going to set out to drink a glass of wine per week/day/whatever just because I can, but I did take a sip of my mum's wine the other night because I really wanted it, and it was amazing.. took care of my cravings for wine and I don't feel bad either now :)

I dreamt I had a glass of red wine last night...and I do not like red wine. I don't really miss it...just sometimes. I haven't had a drop since finding out I'm pregnant. Although I honestly don't believe a glass of wine on the odd ocassion will do any damage...but I don't want to be the one to test that theory. I like sweet drinks anyway...so usually I'll make some juice and 7-up and put it in a big wine glass...makes me feel like I'm having a cocktail! My mom says it's not what you drink, it's the glass you drink it from! lol

I've not have a drinnk since we got our BFP. I looked into alcohol free wine for Christmas, but it still have a % of alcohol in so that is out. H does not want me to drink at all and I am happy to go along with it.

Cx

I have had two glasses of wine so far. I dont think ill have anymore. I just really craved them at the time.

None, i didnt really drink before and certainly wouldht now. But I assure you after all this when I am fit enough i want a drink!

Well then I'm hoping he's willing to forgo as well! lol
My friend got me some sparkling juice...comes in a nice bottle and looks pretty, she got me 2 bottles...saving one for xmas and one for new years! woohoo. I already told the family hands off my sparkling juice!! I'm not sharing!

I've had three 1/3 glasses of wine. Literally a little bit sloshed into a glass and topped up with ice and spaced out through my pregnancy.

Oooh yes sparkling grape juice, my parents used to buy this for us for New Year's Eve when we were kids so that we could pretend we were drinking champagne, lol.. it even comes in like a wine/champagne bottle.. I'm gonna have to get my mum to get me some of this for this year for sure!!

And is it just me, or are men, err.. boys.. DINKS, my boyfriend goes to the bar and drinks all the time when he knows I was pregnant when I finally turned legal and can't go out and do that.. or he'll order beers when we go out to dinner then complain that I won't DD for him haha.

My OH said 'if you really want me to give up drinking, I will...for you...BUT it would be a shame to waste a DD!' LOL. Although saying that I don't think he's had more than a couple of drinks total throughout my 10 weeks of pregnancy so far...but I'm sure that'll change on xmas day!

I have not had a drink atall because i love my wine and one sip would send me wanting more, i am also going cold turkey with the ciggerettes almost 2 weeks now but before it was only 1 or 2 a week.

There are so many different opinions on alcohol in pregnancy, that it really has to be you that decides how much you can have if any.

I agree excessive amounts is bloody stupid but if a women wants a small glass of wine a week then its up to her, alot of my friends did.

In parts of europe people drink wine with practically every meal and they give it to children.

I personally say no as i dont want the guilt of hurting my child if anything should happen.

When i was pregnant with my son 7 years ago, it was said to be ok to have a pint of larger or glass of wine 2-3 times a week, which i did but now they say not to drink at all. I was gutted, i'm no alcoholic but i do like a drink everynow and then so when it was on the news the other week that a couple of drinks was ok i sent my OH to the shop for some cans of fosters! I think i've had a bout 4 cans in the last 3-4 weeks. It didn't hurt my son so i'm sure it won't hurt the LO. I stopped smoking (cold turkey) 2 days after getting my BFP and didn't touch a drop of alcohol for about 10 weeks so it was lovely to have a can of larger on a saturday night while watchin x-factor :)
