I'm from the north east and we always said Santa when I was little and I teach Reception kids in Leeds now and they say Santa too. I taught in London for 10 years and the kids always called him Father Christmas there, never Santa.
I was discussing this last night with DH as I was wrapping presents as I couldnt remember what the children say, they say Father Christmas and my DH said he thought Santa was quite American.
He used to be called Old Christmas back in Georgian times and was all for the booze and ladies so Queen Victoria stepped in and renamed him Father Chistmas and made him lovable and puritanical. I don't know where Santa Claus comes from but it sure sounds like it has a Latin origin.
I use Father Christmas though I might start using Old Christmas as he sounds way more fun!
