What is the difference between normal formula and follow on milk?

I've seen some people say they won't change until LO is on cows milk?

Does anyone know about it?x

My HV said the follow on milk is a marketing ploy as they are not legally allowed to advertise first milk.

I think follow on milk has that bit more nutrients and all but apart from that, nothing!

we switched to follow on milk and switched back after 5 days, didnt agree with lo at all, could just be a coinsidence but she ended with a bad stomach and awful nappies, pooing 5 times a day and it wasnt nice at all lol. we switched back and she was back to her normal self in a couple of days. Like i say could just be coinsidence, but first milk is fine till 1 year so im sticking to it.

As I'm aware follow on milk has alot more sugar in.

It's always on offer - that gives it away really!

I bought a tub of the Cow and Gate Follow-On Milk- it smelt and tasted like milkshake! I didn't give it to ds in the end, I think he would have liked it too much and I wouldn't have been able to get him onto cows milk...then again, I reckon that's what C&G planned! I just give him cows milk plus vitamin drops.

There's not a huge difference. First milk is classed as a medicine and so is not allowed to be advertised or have special offers on it. Follow on milk is classed as a food supplement and can therefore be advertised and have special offers - including things like boots and nectar points. You can also pay for follow on milk using points whereas you can't pay for first milk using them. I used aptimal and really didn't notice a difference in smell etc.

They are pretty much same, except you can get follow-on milk on special offers so thats why from 6 months on my daughter went onto follow-on milk. I remember Asda doing the huge 1.6kg tin of SMA for £5!! Tesco had C&G for £3.89 (halfprice!) My LO had Aptamil First til 6 months then had all SMA/Cow&Gate/Aptamil or whichever one was on special in the shops! Never had any problem with any milks with her!

This LO is breastfed but I do buy a tin of Follow-on milk every 6wks or so as he has it in his cereal and in any meals - again I would just buy whichever is on offer
:flower:

I used aptimil and switched to the follow on didn't notice the difference in taste or her nappies etc ....

And as aptimil never seems to go on offer it's still not cheaper for me to buy ...

The only aptimil that goes on offer is the 1+ and 2+ ..... Which I use ... And tbh I think that taste a lot different to the follow on milk

i moved to follow on a 6 months, just cause it thought that was best! I think it has more iron in it.
my HV said its pointless too.
I will move to cows milk at 1 year i think.
i use cow and gate and its never on offer.

Although its rarely on offer if you can get points on it and if you buy it in boots and have parenting club on your boots card that's 10 points for every pound so basically 10% back.

If you switch to follow on milk does it make a significant difference in cost? DS is on 7oz formula a day of first milk.
