I'm having the dilemma too! Half the information I read states it's important as babys iron ect. requirements change.
The other half says its just a marketing scam & it's also much sweeter, bad for LO teeth & encouraging them to only like sweet foods!

Hmmm :-/

You don't have to. I did because follow on has more iron (iron starts depleting after 6 months) and T didn't eat properly until 9.5 months. He's used to it now and we'll be weaning to cows milk soon so don't see the point in changing him back to first stage formula.

T likes a variety of food, veg, meat etc so I wouldn't say that's strictly true. He doesn't eat a lot of sweet stuff though.

If your baby has a well balanced diet then theres no need to change xx

I've also read that a babies protien requirements increase from 6 months and the follow on milk has increased protien to meet this as well as more iron.

I will be making the change to the follow on milk when the time comes. It makes sense to me to change because they say breastmilk changes as the baby ages to meet it's requirements so why shouldn't formula change too?

I asked my HV too and they said not to bother about follow on milk as long as LO was eating a varied diet of solids (which he does) However I discovered in the last few days there is another benefit to follow on milk - you can use vouchers to buy it ie tesco clubcard vouchers (which includes the voucher exchange at the moment) and collect points when you buy it eg Boots advantage card points and it counts towards boots offers too.

I breastfed for 7 months and FF for the last month and a bit and I am shocked at how much formula costs! So for the same price I can buy follow on formula and collect boots points on it and use their discount vouchers when buying it. I have some £5 off when you spend £20 vouchers at the moment so I can buy 2 tubs of aptamil follow on (and something little for £1 to make it up to £20) and it only costs £15!

I am sure everyone else has already realised that you can save pennies on follow on but its an exciting discovery for me!

As everyone has said you don't have to, there is no proven benefit to follow on milk. I just used first milk with my son until he was a year than put him onto cows milk. I'm not sure what I'll do with my daughter, the clubcard/advantage points for it would come in useful and even though it is not necessary there is nothing wrong with follow on milk. Will have to see nearer the time.

I have now compared the nutritional info on the back of both boxes and have decided to move on to follow in milk when LO turns 6m now, I was worried it was too sweet as had hear that but when comparing found that infact it had less sugars!
So apart from the sweet thing I havent heard or read any other negatives of it, only - its not necassary and is just a marketing scam! But even if it is & is just the same as 1st milk why not move on if u can save money and it's the same or better?!

We just started giving Aurora follow on milk at night only. I think we'll continue the first milk and follow on milk (at night only) until she's a year but we're just taking it one step at a time. :)
