LO is almost 6 months (she'll be 6 months next week) so today we tried her with apple purée for the first time. It was smooth and runny, but she gagged the moment it touched her lips. We didn't force anything, we let her play with it and a spoon and only used a spoon to touch it to her lips so she could lick it. Now, I know babies gag, but she seemed to do it just at the taste. Googling only brings up gagging with BLW or lumpy purée. Did we do something wrong or is this normal?

(Btw, I know all about BLW and we have decided to try purées and finger food)

this sounds completely normal our baby girl hated appeals by themselves, i would just try something different until you find something she likes and then go back to apples in a couple of days maybe mix them with banana and see if she will eat that. i find with some foods for the first time she will gag but not always i just leave it a few days and then try again and she has been fine with them.

good luck you are doing great. We decided not to do BLW either.

Maybe try mixing the puree with some of her usual milk. Just think she spent 6 months and the only favour she has ever had is milk so something new can be a surprise! In the UK we have baby rice which you mix with milk and then can mix with the puree. Makes it a more familiar taste

Thanks. We're going to try her with something different and see if she likes it any better.

My little boy been having solids for 8weeks now and still gags/grimaces at new flavours--particularly fruit purées as they are so strong in taste. We started him with baby porridge and simple veg purées like sweet potato.. He seemed to take to those easier. Don't worry though it's all normal. Can take up to 18tries of a new food before baby will like it! Xxx

We tried carrot as a first purée. Also added some formula so she had something familiar in the taste. Apple can be quite a strong flavour. Maybe try something like carrot or sweet potato next.

Carrot mixed with formula seems to be better received. Less face-pulling at least!

it may just have been a shock, apple is quite a strong taste and can be quite an attack on the taste buds, rio is fully established on puree'd solids now and still pulls funny faces at certain things lol x

my LO still gags when I give him apple and he's 9 months. he hates it.

Try butternut squash.

I started off with baby rice for a few days, then porridge and then veg & fruit.
The baby rice is pretty tasteless but yhe baby learns its something thicker than just milk then we tried things with flavour.
His favourites are-
Carrot
Banana
Mango

He gags when I give him kiwi or peas and I think its because it not a taste he likes? Or too much flavour?

Sweet potato is a great first taste :) apple might be a little sharp x

Thanks for the suggestions. Her second taste of carrot was today and she opened her mouth and leaned forward when I put the spoon to her lips, so I think carrot is a hit. We have sweet potato, parsnip and banana in the shopping list for next week.
