Birthing class tonight! Another night of me trying to guess what everyone is talking about :P

For those of you who live in dual-language households, are you speaking German or English at home?

What do you do with regards to your kids and language?

we are hoping to talk both english and german hubby will speak german and me english around baby

I'll be mostly speaking english, but I'll probably do some books and things in German too. Being in Germany means that it wont be as hard to teach them German as well. Because of daycare, grandparents, random people etc. My DH will probably be trying to do a lot more German but I don't know if we are that worried about being too strict about it.

But like I say, as long as we are here it wont be a problem. If we go to an english speaking country it might get difficult...

We are mostly speaking English, and I'll see what comes most natural, but I think it will be be oh mostly talking English to her and me in german, but under each other we'll still talk English.

Much cooler here today thankfully, but it was heating up this afternoon again.
We speak English at home, as neither of us is German! I figure they'll learn enough at Kindergarten...
Who attends your birth then if you just see ob.gyn for antenatal, the actual doctor?

I think it's neat this thread is up and running. :D I posted ages ago now but it wasn't very active then. Always nice to see other English speakers in Germany. :)

Welcome back then! :flower:

Last night was wonderful, I slept like a log!! No scorching heat :D

The midwives that are part of the staff at the hospital and the doctor if necessary.
Welcome back Saphira. Do you have a German husband or do you have an Husband that is based here in the army?

oh yeah, it's strange, you don't actually get to know the people that are at your birth. It's hospital midwives and doctors only

Hi Saphira
Sarah, that sounds quite like the UK then, it's just whatever MWs are on duty when you rock up to the hospital. I'm quite looking forward to it being someone I've known for the last 4 months this time :)
Congrats on your girl Whisper :)

Does anyone know can I buy cupcakes in Germany? I can't believe that with all the awesome bakeries here I haven't seen any! It's either that or I'll have to try and bake some! Or I could be useful and pack my hospital bag...

I'm surprised by the lack of cupcakes too, I just make my own. I made some rainbow coloured ones the other day, I'm sure they'd be a hit if I sold them :P

Oh my, they look delicious :D.
I've only once seen a cupcake store (but it was in Frankfurt) maybe try google?? but I've seen chocolate covered muffins in all the German bakeries. Not quite the same, but I guess it depends what you want it for! I do a lot of my own baking, made the best blueberry and yogurt(and lemon) the other day! but I guess they were muffins too :P

Whisper, it could be a girl fussball spieler!! The German girls are really good too :O. Mine is definitely going to be active, she loves to beat me up! :happydance:

Ballet then? :D
And yeah, perhaps go to a truffle/cake fancy bakery. They possible do Cupcake towers, like Cupcake cakes. Pretty sure the place we went for our wedding cake had one of those. (and we didnt spend that much on our cake).

Thanks! :) morri, my husband's German. Where's everyone from and how did you end up in Germany? :)

I got to know my midwife before the birth. I met up with her and the lady who'd take her place in the case she was on vacation the big day. My daughter had probably the "worst" due date ever in midwife's/doctor's eyes. :p December 24th! I joked my doctor said I needed to be induced 4 days before so he'd have it off, hehe.:haha: Anyway, about my midwife - I met up with her a few times from 32ish weeks + and every time I brought in a never-ending list of questions. Now that I look back I probably looked like such a noob. Well, I was.

Dr. Oetker makes cupcakes by the way: https://www.oetker.de/oetker/produkte/backen_und_mehr/backmischungen/cupcakes.html
Never tried them before but who knows, maybe they're good. :)
