Goverment confirms scrapping NHS direct.

winegums, registered nurses don't just do the obvious nursey jobs.. there's loads of jobs they do and theyre not all direct patient care but it doesnt mean theyre not as important  For example, a few of my mums friends (shes a ward sister) have auditing jobs and some have jobs where they do bed management or assessments for patients if theyre suitable for rehab, longterm NHS care etc etc

Its kinda ignorant to think that nurses only nurse patients.

i never said nurses only nurse patients?! i think it's a waste of time and money having them sitting on a phone all day when other people could do that job.

Er, I'd rather have a nurse who actually has some medical background assess my situation over the phone than someone who has never had a job before :dohh: I wouldn't mind care assisstants assessing me (as a patient phoning up over the phone), it doesn't need to be a band 5 staff nurse but i would be really unhappy with a glorified call centre worker deciding if my problem is or isn't a problem.

Its kinda like the GP receptionists trying to tell me that my problem isnt bad enough for an emergency appointment! Shes not medically trained whatsoever so she wouldnt know.

Took my other half a week after breaking his leg for emergency surgery to get pins and plates in, thats where he is now waiting in a hospital bed. All hospitals where full here and not enough surgeons. They said it was cut backs and have a list from 2 weeks ago of people waiting for surgery on breaks. My other half got in quick by comparison to some.

Labour have worked wonders for the NHS

I seem to remember the tories running the NHS into the ground when they were last in power and labour having to clear it up

We're bitching because a great service is being cut.

I'd like to know where all these out of work nurses will find jobs given that most PCTs have frozen replacement recruitment for some months now.

ok so you don't have to phone them?! they will be doing exactly the same as the nurses, they will have training and they will be reading out of manuals and looking on the computer like the current staff at NHS DIRECT already do!

Do you honestly think that the nurses that are working behind nhs direct will be re-located to the hospitals?! More than likely they will just be given a pat on their backs and sent on their way coz they have been replaced by people who HAVENT worked hard towards their career...is that fair?

And with regards to finding your local police number, if it's a non emergency then there should be plenty of time for you to open the front of your phone book :dohh: or even just pop in to the police station itself!!

But anyway, although it doesnt sound like it, I actually think this can work well, if it's managed well. But the reality is, it probably wont be managed well and it wont be given the funding it requires!!

no of course i don't think they should be relocated, why should they be? they can apply for nursing jobs like everyone else does who loses a job and has to apply for another......... why exactly should they be an exeption?

as for non emergencies the point is to phone them when you don't know if you should phone an ambulance or not. it's obviously also for other things but many people will have phoned an ambulance in the past cos they don't want to waste ages trying to find a number for NHS DIRECT when their kid could be in trouble. with the new service they can dial 111 say 'here's the symptoms should is it an emergency?' and if it is they can phone 999 and say 'ambulance please' rather than sitting on the emergency services line working out whether it is an emergency in the first place when someone who truly IS having an emergency could be talking to that operator

They will be relocated if its part of their contract which is probably will be. They have to relocate NHS staff to a similar job that they have the skills for and pay them the same or better

well that's good then huh? i wouldn't have expected them to do that so it saves them looking for jobs.... win win

yes its 'good' i suppose that the nurses wont have to go on the dole :dohh: although if it wasnt part of their exsisting contract I expect they would be made redundant if it was the tories choice.

why do i recall about 2 or 3 years ago in the news lots of stories about 'why labour has failed the NHS'

well i'm sure you'd be surprised then. when i phoned the lady was really nice and helpful, however after stating that lots of people phone up with regards to their kids eating sudocrem (yeh i kno) she still had no idea and she'd just have to go look on the internet!

Winegums do you ever visit a doctor or do you just pop to the library and read a medical book and fix yourself?

i don't often go to the doctor anymore as it's gone so downhill since i was younger lol but i don't often have the need. if i really need to then i'll go. why?

umm i don't read the daily mail, in fact i don't think anyone reads the daily mail as it's a waste of time. in fact i don't read any tabloids lol!

is it just me or has this gone way off topic? as soon as people point out the benefits everyone panics to try and find reasons to keep on arguing lol

maybe she was looking up the ingredients? I doubt she was going onto yahoo answers and searching for 'omg my bb has eaten sudocrem.. HALP'.

I am speechless. So glad there are more people willing to fight for our NHS than just let it die.

Oh, and don't believe everything you watch on the news.

Because you seem to think that anyone who reads a medical text can understand and appropriately apply it.

The news has almost exclusively been right wing always. Paper or tv. The change was starkly obvious the day after the Tories did a deal with Murdoch that would see the BBC in jeopardy if they got in power. Lol
