Hi all
I will be starting IVF in march and am going to take the next 2 months to seriously diet and exercise to get my bmi down. I am 14 stone and only 5 ft 2. My bmi is 35.8. I've joined the gym and am planning to go swimming or do a aqua aerobics class 3-4 times a week. But I could do with some diet advise as I am feeling really lost as what to do I don't want to join a club as I don't think I could fit it in with work plus I have a 5 year old to look after. Thanks in advance x Tanzy x

Hey Tanzy

I'm also starting my IVF in March doing long protocol. We are having an NHS go so i had to get my BMI under 30 - it was 38 and now its 32 but i still have another stone to lose before my cycle.

What does your BMI have to be chick?

I find low cal/fat is the best option for me - something like weight watchers as it fits into my 'normal' life and if i need to grab a sandwich i can have a low fat one or if i'm going out then i can cut down during the day. Exercise is the biggest thing i think - i watch Biggest Loser on Sky to motivate me

I am doing the 'running made easy' guide which i did when i was heavier - gradual increases and it's not a long run so you could fit it into your day when your OH watches your little one - running made me drop dress sizes and lose a ton of weight too!! xx

I am doing weight watchers too and it guarantees results without exercise although you will lose more with exercise. It averages a loss of 2lbs per week. Each food has a point value and you have a set amount of points a day that you can eat. Many vegetables are 0 points which really helps. They have said that weight loss is 70% food and 30% exercise.

Best wishes on your weight loss journey towards ivf. It looks like it is you, rachelle, and me that are on very similar journies with very similar timelines!

Hi, im on weightwatchers to and it really works, im down 12lbs in 4 weeks. You can also do it online rather than go to meetings if you find that difficult, i personally couldnt do the online version as i need the 'fear' of the weightin.

Goodluck hun, hope it works out for you x

Since you're on that tight of schedule and have some 5 BMI points to get rid of which must be around 20 lbs, right? I'd advise you look into the Cambridge Diet or the Lighter Life diet of any meal replacement very low calorie diet out there and you will GUARANTEED be at your necessary 29BMI by then if you start right away.

If you had more time or less to lose I too would advocate either a low calorie/low fat diet or, more likely, with better health results in the long run a high protein/natural fat, low carbohydrate diet which is the best alternative for one's nutrition in general but they are both going to give you too slow of results for what you need.

Good luck.

I would definately reccomend the low carb diet as a long term weight loss tool. I have been on it just over a month and with not much effort on my side and with christmas too I've lost 5 pounds.

I replace carbs like potatoes/chips/rice with greens, carrot sticks, fresh fruit and cheese. Choosing smart carbs works too such as a pasta salad with loads of veggies is better than choosing a white bread sandwich if your stuck for something on your lunch break.

For a treat I bake low carb low sugar carrot cake which is yummy as regular cake. I'll happily share the recipe if you'd like :)

Good luck! xx

Hi
I'll definately take the recipe it sounds yum ;-)

Thanks all. I'm having to go private as we have a child already. I saw the consultant in Nov and at my current weight he was happy for me to start straight away but I did say I would like to lose so weight first he told me to lose it steadily as fast drastic weight loss is not good for the body. I think I may try w/w online my only real problem is sticking to it but I am determined this time as usually I lose half a stone then put it back on. Good luck everyone let's hope 2010 is our year x

Good luck oneday.....I know my doc says rapid isn't good for the body but also that it is very likely to be gained back as soon as your are pg.....which is then dangerous for you and baby.Best wishes!

Here I go then lol:

Ingredients:

100g Dark Muscovado sugar (Unrefined sugar)
8 teaspoons Splenda (or other sweetner measured in teaspoons)
3 Medium Eggs
175ml Sun flower oil
230g grated carrot (If you have a food processor use that to finely grate)
1 large ripe mashed banana
60g dried fruit (easy on the raisens they are high carb/sugar, soak in tea for a moist cake)
280g plain flour (use some white some wholemeal according to your taste)
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1 tsp Bicarb of Soda
2 tsp baking powder

Nutrition Approx, per 100g:

475 Calories
38g fat
11g Saturates

Method:

Preheat oven to 180/350/Gas mark 4

I make these in muffin size cases so line a 12 muffin tray or grease and line a 9 inch pan.

Place sugar, oil, eggs, carrots and bananas in your mixing bowl. sift in the dry ingredients minus the fruit. Stir untill smooth.

Stir in your dried fruit gently.

If making cupcakes use an icecream scoop to measure out equal quantities for each paper other wise poor into your pan. Place in preheated oven.

Cupcakes will take 25-30 mins a whole cake will take approximately one hour.

Thanks I might try making the cupcakes for work when we are all getting fed up of the dieting x

Any weight, lost in any fashion is AS LIKELY to get back on at any time when one goes back to eating like before.

You are absolutely right MissAma that it will come back if you go back to eating like before, but if the diet is more extreme and you cannot continue that extreme diet during pregnancy then the adjustment back to "normal" is harder (I think) whereas a less extreme diet can be more easily adjusted to when you become pregnant, especially when it is such a short term thing like 2 months that oneday is looking for. That is just what I have been told and makes sense to me.

Best wishes.

Must admit i was told not to do any liquid or extreme lo-cal diets as the FS said it could affect my fertility. She said i was better exercising and just eating healthy - eat less move more! xx

No extreme diets are ever a good idea, much less for people who do not have a lot to lose or are not on a strict deadline but many are vey safe.

If we ignore how it affected my gallbadder, I am healthier in all blood indicators after Cambridge than ever before it. I was likely getting far more of my vits, minerals and nutrients than all the people around me eating what they thought was a healthy diet -such as the oxymoronic idea of "good carbs" and so on-. And, I haste to add, I am not generalizing so I will only speak from my perspective. My fertility was not affected negatively in the least, my cycles continued all through it and I Oed as usual.

With all that said, I am not advocating anyone chose any method over another as long as those methods are well researched and grounded in science, I am just reacting to misinformation and yeah, there's plenty of it coming from the medical profession.

Good luck everyone with whatever you are doing to get those pounds off.

MissAma you are a shining example to us all with your tremendous weightloss!! I think whatever you can do to get it off works and you have done so well... i did try the Cambridge but i kept eating 'real' food as well as the liquid stuff... i think that was my downfall
