Hip Babies / Hip Dysplasia

I would love to see that!!!!!!!!

We didnt get a carseat from the hosp but the one we got from argos is grand - luckily emma is a 'petit' girl so she still fits into most things - like her buggies!

Did you get a coloured cast?? ours is green - vvvv green and that mixed with her ginger hair makes her look like a little lephuran (sp?) :haha:

I think we just have to laugh about it otherwise we would all end up

Ellie's cast is bright pink. Green sounds good too :) Claire's Ellie's looks like it's white plaster? My DD's is fiberglass and lined with gortex, the gortex is a lifesaver when it comes to cleaning up poop-splosions. Although knock on wood we haven't had any with this cast, only 11 days to go to her final cast change. I'm hoping to get the last one reduced to 5 weeks instead of 6 as we're supposed to be going to Canada for a wedding a few days before 6 weeks!

Glad to hear your LOs are all doing well. It really is amazing how well they cope. And I hope the mummies are coping well too?

Just wanted to add, Ellie's been in her cast 11 weeks almost, and I've had very few comments. Barely any stares either... I don't think many people notice (even though her feet stick out of her buggy at the strangest angle, and I don't bother covering her up most of the time) and those that do usually are sympathetic, not accusing. Most wait for me to mention it before they say anything. I did have someone in Te$co stop me the other day because their daughter (now 18) had been in spica. For the first week or so I was a bit worried every time I went out that people would stare. I watched everyone for a reaction. Now I'm used to it. And people still comment on her lovely smile or bright blue eyes, but not usually the cast.

yesh Ellies cast is white all they had as there del hadnt been yet was white or baby blue so we went for white

We havent had to many comments made or situations where people stare just a couple I must admit she got loads of get well soon cards flowers and teddies from all her little friends at toddlers lol shes a lucky girls

I think that we are lucky too Ellie is so so small lol, in her cast she still fits 3-6 month clothes and even some 0 - 3 month clothes, and she still fits in the carry cot of her pram and we have a mamas and papas luna that she fits into too, I remember you saying now that you got the carseat from argos

aw thats noce I must admit its not been as bad as we thought

Great news that you might just need 5 more weeks for little Ellie in her cast, would make it easier for travelling, are you flying I guess!!! xx

It's great to read that your LO's are doing well in their Spica's, it's making me feel less worried about our spica future!

A silly question - if you go shopping with your LO, say to Tesco, how do you manage with putting them in the trolly?

Ellie doesnt fit in them not even the newborn baby bits you know the blue plasic careseat part, so I keep her in the carrycot part of her pram and rest the basket on that or just wait til Peter is in and we shop together x

Alias - that is fab that you are nearly on the last stretch

Well we managed our 1st outing today - went to the supermarket - she managed to fit in the baby seat with a small cushion behind her (we seem to take it everywhere with us!!) and we only had one comment from someone (who i vagely know) who just said bless her, but its better to do it at this age.
We also picked Lucy up from playschool and the kids asked about it but they were just like 'oh ok' - so hopefully claire you will start to get some good comments soon, either that or come over to Ireland, everyone here seems to know someone who knows someone who has had a dislocated hip!!!!

MrsWatson at the mo its not as hard as what i thought it would be, but it helps cause emma doesnt seem to be affected by it at all:thumbup:

Great news that Emma doesn't seem affected by it - great name too, I'm Emma!

Sophie is generally such a happy baby, I'm hoping too that she will take it in her stride. She wasn't bothered at all when she went into pavlik, she was more upset when she came out of it!

Thanks for your reply about shopping with the cushion, silly the things I keep thinking about :o)

Hi

Can I join in please?! My names is Samantha & my daughter is Chloe :)

Chloe is having a brace fitted this week. The doctors say her hips are "borderline" and that she would benefit from 3 months wearing a brace.

Im dreading it!! I know compared to being in a cast, a few months in a brace is nothing, but shes already a little fusspot!!

So I was wondering if you ladies had any tips for helping her (and us!!) cope with her brace?

Looking forward to chatting

We are flying, and we've been told not to fly with her in the cast, because of the risks of swelling. But when to realised there'd be an overlap with our trip, we discussed it with them and they said it could come off early.

Sam2eb, I haven't dealt with the brace yet (Ellie will go into it after her cast comes off) but at that age it's a hip abductor brace, not a pavlik harness, right? You'll need to look at your car seat and buggy, as your LO might not fit what you have. A wide seat with a flat bottom is best. My DD almost fits into her umbrella stroller, but she didn't fit in the travel system at all. We've got a folded towel down the back of the stroller to make it more comfortable. Also we use a pillow under Ellie's legs as they end up kinda hung in the air otherwise, I think the same would be needed in the brace. The steps website is really helpful when preparing. When is your Chloe getting the brace fitted?

She is having it fitted on Wednesday morning. They showed me it at her last appointment & it doesnt look too bad. Its like a belt round her waist & then straps round her thighs.

We were looking at getting an umbrella stroller this week & the carseat has been sorted. Thats a good tip about the pillow :flower:

Hi!!

We have only just got Ellie in her spica cast, 2 weeks ago tomorrow and she is doing ok if anything she wakes up once or twice a night only cause she is stiff and sore is all I can think as she wont take a bottle and we just cuddle for 5 and then she is down again.

The carseat was and is the biggest problem for us as it is HUGE and we are having to sell our car a Bora to get another one so that there is more room in it, as we have been told Ellie will prob be in cast for 6 month then a brace for 3 month so we will have to use the carseat for that time, she does however still fit into her carrycot on the pram as she is still only a little over 12lbs at 7 month as she was prem

Good luck xx

Hi Sam,

Sophie was in a pavlik harness for 8 weeks, and I can honestly say that it didn't appear to effect her at all.

The hardest thing I thought would be not giving her a bath ( although you might be able to take the brace off for an hour, some Dr's allow this) but we still gave her a sponge wash every night and she seemed to enjoy this just as much (I think she just likes being naked!)

I found that the best clothes were pretty floaty dresses, they covered the harness really well.

Good luck, look forward to hearing that it has been successful for you.

My doc wasn't willing to give consent, due to the amount of her body in a cast and the distance of the flight!

sam2eb, I second the suggestion of floaty dresses, they are the best, and usually the abductor brace you can remove for nappies and baths, so you can do leggings underneath the brace, to keep her warm as well as to protect her skin. Although wait and see if you're allowed to take the brace off! Good luck on Wednesday.

Hi

good luck tommorrow:hugs: i dont really have any more advise, just that we take a small pillow EVERYWHERE with us and she sleeps with two pillows - one under her feet and one under her head - just so she is comfortable and floaty dresses are the best - that is all emma wears

Yesterday I had to take emma for her injections - NONE of the docs in the surgery had ever seen a child in a cast and ended up giving them a crash course in the cast and showed them how to change a nappy - and how quick i was at doing it (and some of the docs there are no spring chickens :haha:)

We take a blanet everywhere, but same principle. It goes folded up behind her back to make things more comfortable.

Just curious, where did they give Emma her injections? Ellie's overdue for her 12 and 13 month injections, I've been putting it off because of the cast, but I want to get them done before we go on holidays, so I'll book an appointment for next week after the cast gets changed (they don't want her to have them for 3 weeks before a cast change)

Also, what's your method for nappy changes (and Claire!) just to see if you've learned any tricks I can steal :)

well as it was her 6 month lot, its 3 injections, so they gave 2 now - in her arm:cry: and will do the other one in two weeks - she just didnt feel right injecting her loads in her arm, they did ask when would the cast be off - they did say if it was the 12 month lot that they might have waited - they also called up the vaccine people and asked them what they thought - it was bad though, normally my doc is so quick - but it took AGES (well it felt like it) and we had to hold down her arms - she was sat on me - normally the injections dont bother her too much, but she realy cried this time:cry:

with regards to nappy change at home i have an old thin b/f pillow, i lie her on that, undo top nappy, pull out the one in the cast - clean with baby wipes (im going through a mountain of them at the mo) flip her over onto her front, clean her bum and up her back, tuck nappy in at the back 1st, put the larger nappy on her back, flip her over onto her back, tuck in the nappy into the front and do up the outside nappy:wacko:

with the nappy change I do it on my knee! its the only way I feel comfortable or on her changer if in the house

but either way I take her nappy down at the front with her on her back and wipe her clean then I pull the nappy completly out and we place a baby wipe at her woo woo incase she pees this catches it, and we turn her over and clean the back then we place the nappy in the front then the back and then fasten it we only use one nappy?? I must admit I find the nappy changing really easy

For clothes we have her in long sleeved vest at night and then her sleep bag and during the day dresses or romper suits xx

Well, t-minus three days to our last cast change. I'm starting to get worried we won't make it. I'm scared she's going to get sick over the weekend and we'll be postponed. And I know I said that will be ok, but I'd still rather get it over with, move on and get to the last step (of this at least).

It doesn't help that her reflux seems to be flaring up a bit. I think it's because the cast is getting tight. And her nappies are a bit messier than usual, but I am hoping that's just because we've stopped boiling her drinking water. They're not runny, just not as s solid as normal. It happened last time before the change that everything worried me. I expected this.

Going to see Take That tomorrow night, that might take my mind off of it? :)
