good luck for the cast change, wahooo it will be her last one!

Sam2eb how are you getting on with the brace? hope all is well

aw fab great way to keep your mind of it, well Ellie has hand, foot and mouth and her nappies have beens horrendous and we have had an accident so went to the dr on Fri, we love our dr he is so laid back and makes us feel at ease, anyway I said to him we have a little poop on the padding inside the cast at the back what should I do, and he sat there looking at Ellie for what seemed like a life time and then said, oh, hmmmm, what to do, ive never dealt with a hip spica before I just burst out laughing!!!! and then he said here cleam it with these, and handed me alcholic screen wipes for the computer screen LOL LOL xxx

Ah no! We had foot hand and mouth a few weeks ago, it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. Unfortunately there's not much you can do about the dirty cast I think. We use baby wipes to clean as much as we can, but we had quite a few messy nappies with the first cast (knock on wood this one has been incident free!) and she had poop stains on the padding around the top of the cast (gamgee?) She smelled pretty bad by the end of that cast, you'd open her vest and get a smell of sweaty, poopy baby, lovely!

I'm presuming you didn't use the screen wipes? I can't imagine that would be good on skin! Can you get the nappy in between the poopy part and her skin, so it doesn't irritate?

Anyone else keep finding food down the cast? We always keep Ellie in a vest so that she can't 'post' food into it, but about once a week I find a piece of cheese or a cherrio or something in the cast, which must have gone down the front of her vest. I sometimes wonder how long it's been there!

Oh yeah, Take That were pretty good. Parts of the stage show were pretty impressive! And Robbie is just so full of himself it's hilarious :) I went with a friend who I'd met when in hospital before Ellie was born (I'd been 'committed' for pre-eclampsia and placenta previa)

I'm going to see take That next month - CAN'T WAIT!

Claire - screen wipes for cast cleaning?! That's so funny

x

So today hasn't been great. Went for the cast change and the surgeon initally said 'twelve weeks, she can go into the brace'. But his boss said no, back into the cast. We did some petitioning, and she'll be out of the cast in just over a month. I've counted the number of days, literally.

DD's been incredibly unsettled all day since the cast change. And the new cast is SO tight. We actually went straight from the day ward to the plaster room and asked them to look at it, because I couldn't get the nappy more than an inch or two up the front and back. They cut down the front and stretched it apart about 1/2 an inch. Now I can get the nappy all the way up the front, and maybe 1/2 way up the back? Nightmare. If she doesn't settle in the next day or two, we'll be back and ask them to do the same on the back of the cast. Last time she was back in the creche the day after the cast change. This time I'm wondering will I have to take another day off. And of course this is while I'm mad busy at work.

32 days to go. 32 days to go. 32 days to go.

Oh no - how are you getting on with it now??

well... we have had our 1st 'poo' incident  i have no idea how we are going to last 6 more weeks in this cast!

hope everyone is doing well x

Hi Everyone. Ellie has settled into her new cast. She's pretty much back to normal, but with a little extra fussiness from time to time. I'm convinced she's figured out that she can't do what other babies her age are doing. She really wants to crawl, she's sorta crawling backwards in the cast when we put her on her tummy. And yesterday evening she grabbed some shoes (a H&M pair I'd bought for her, but we never really bother putting shoes on with the cast) and kept giving them to her daddy, and then bawled when he didn't do what she wanted. We finally figured out she wanted him to put them on her feet! Then she wiggled her feet for ages, and I had to hold her standing in them (I think she could stand in this cast if she were strong enough). Today she took her sun hat off the table, put it on, and then pointed outside :)

It feels like the next 4 weeks will go on forever, but I know it's nothing in comparison to the 13 we've already done. The position of this cast just isn't as good, she's rather reclined, and she's not as able to sit and reach in it. Actually, it's sort got the feeling they just slapped it on, the whole is lopsided, the top is lopsided, and parts of the legs seem squarer than they should be. 27 days and counting.

Hel_5, I don't think there's anything you can do but keep your fingers crossed that the explosive nappies are few and far between. We had quite a few with the first cast, and it really stank by the end. but the last one was perfect when it was taken off, well, very dirty outside but we'd managed without a single leaky nappy. We had a leaky wet one this morning, but they're not quite as bad as the dirty ones!

Arrhh that is so cute, when she gets that cast off no-one is going to be able to stop her! - but by the sounds of things i would not be happy with that cast - but im sure you dont want to go back and them say ok well its 4 weeks from now! - im assuming she will be out of the cast by the time you go away?!?

Just wondering if this is just me - but does any one else constantly scap themselves on the cast? my knuckles are SO red

Also im noticing her cast is getting 'tighter' - as in i cant get her nappy in so easily as i could before - i know she is going to grow but i didnt expect it to be struggleling this early on!

She's pretty cute. She's learning so much these days. She's started trying to say 'moooo'(mmmmmmm) and 'bzzzz'(bbbbbbbwwwww) for cows and bees.

The cast isn't getting any easier, and I have to admit I'm a bit depressed about the whole thing. But time is passing, and we're just over 3 weeks away from the cast change now. I've managed to rip up the lining all through the back, and some of the padding has come off as well. It's all under the nappy though, so I'm not worrying too much. It's also starting to smell already from all the hot nights. But she is pretty happy during the day and sleeping at night, so I think we're ok for the moment. At this stage I've just got to keep going, and any problems (like her reflux still hasn't cleared up, and she doesn't eat well some days) I'm going to hope get better when the cast is off.

DH and I are supposed to go away for a night this weekend with some friends, and MIL is taking DD. Really hoping it goes ahead (MIL was trying to change the plan :dohh:) because I could use a bit of a break right now.

Hel, it sounds like Emma's probably had a growth spurt. It should be fine, just keep watching for signs the cast is too tight. I think Ellie has grown 2 or 3 inches since she went into her cast! And I've got a few scrapes from the cast, and am constantly ruining tights when I sit her on my knees when picking her up from the creche.

How's everyone else doing? Claire, is Ellie almost at a cast change?

hi yeah Ellie has her 1st cast change on the 19th July but these past 4 weeks have been so emotional up and down with a lot of downs, went to the dr as I feel really down in the dumps about the whole situation, people say oh its for the best and it wont be long, but no one understands cause they have never been in the situation

so cute about the shoes lol

Awww, It is really tough, isn't it? you can always come vent here. I find that everyone says 'isn't it great that it's fixable' to me. And yes, it is, but we still have to deal with it and it sucks at the moment. I know, she could have something so much worse, but she also could have nothing at all wrong with her! Instead we've had talipes, then reflux, and now hip dysplasia. It's not been an easy road! Don't worry Claire, it's ok to be down about it sometimes. I've been down about it since the last cast change. Ellie already smells and isn't sleeping as well again, and it's just tough.

In other news, my SIL had a baby yesterday, making me an aunt :)

We are almost there. The cast reeks, her nappy leaks almost every night (even with a tena pad!) and she's sick of being pinned down, but we're almost there. Friday week the cast comes off!

How is everyone else doing? Claire, you've got the cast change this week? No, next week (Just checked the date) but only 9 days away...

WOW thats so close :happydance::yipee::wohoo: we are 3 weeks on tuesday from our 1st cast change and i cant wait - Claire your cast change is coming up really soon you must be really happy

I can honestly say some days i dont know how we are going to last 11 more weeks in casts (fxd that everything is ok and its not longer) as Emma keeps trying to 'fling' herself places - if she is sat on your knee she will lurch herself forward so quickly you have to catch her to stop her going face first onto the floor :dohh: i really think she wants to be going places with her big sis

Alais is Ellie going into a splint/brace when she comes out of the cast or is she just free again? Do you know if they have to do any exercises/physio when they come out of the cast - or are they young enough that its ok? also im assuming that they will keep checking their hips for a bit as they get older to make sure everything is growing correctly?? - sorry to ask lots of q's but i thought you may know as your nearing the end of it all x

p.s. i never thought i would be so happy about having to go to the hospital - but im loving the count down to the cast change!!!! :happydance:

 i have had enough today - emmas been a bit under the weather, so this evening i took her top half off so i could get her temperature (under her arm), grand, then i gave her some nurofen, grand, walk out the room to get her bottle, come in and she has been sick everywhere, and i mean EVERYWHERE, all over herself, all on her cast and all down the top of her cast  took me nearly 20 mins to get her clen

Sorry rant over, just sometimes its just fecking shit

yeah Ellies cast change is on Tuesday and im dreading it already hate the thought of her getting the GA but we will manage so glad the rest of you are doing ok well as ok as you can be, I must admit Ellies cast makes her in a shape where all she can do is lie down so its so restricing but she still manages her door bounce and loves it

Hey Claire, I've been wondering how you are, you haven't been around. At least the cast change means you are getting closer to the end! We are one week away. I'm just really hoping that nothing happens that makes us have to postpone... like the chickenpox going around the creche. At the moment she's on antibiotics for yet another tonsil infection - I would place money on her having her tonsils out before she's 5 (I had mine out at that age).

Hel, hopefully Emma is feeling better by now! It's awful when the little ones are sick. That sounds like it was quite an ordeal, I can't imagine how you'd go about cleaning the cast.

Looking back, I was sure I'd replied to that and answered your questions, but apparently not! Maybe I got distracted :dohh:

As far as I know she will go into a brace for 4 weeks after the cast. I haven't been told anything about physio, so I'm going to make an appointment with a private physio for the week afterwards - mainly because even if the hosp does physio, we're supposed to be going away and I'm not sure they'll fit her in that quickly. And they will be checking up on her hip for years. She's already got an appointment for September to possibly decide if she needs further surgery (osteotomy).

Actually, if you have any other questions stick them up... I've started a list on my phone for things I want to find out, and you guys might think of things I haven't thought of yet!

Cheers alais - she had an ear infection so she was on antibiotics and then yesterday she came out in a rash - so it was just viral - but shes all better now
its horrible to think that after going through all of this she still might need an osteotomy  thats the part that i hate most about all of this - there is no final date - its all just we will see how she is doing in aug/sept etc - if i think of any more q's for you i will let you know!

Claire emmas cast is the same, but we have a big bean bag that we can prop her up so she is sitting up and i brought a little breakfast tray table and its perfect  - good luck with the cast change - hope you are both doing well x
