Hip Babies / Hip Dysplasia

yeah I found when Ellie was on antibiotics last week, we all had tonsollitus, she was having really really explosive poops!!! yeah we are the same from Ellie was born, well my 20 week scan its been problem after problem and tbh her cast is our least worry, she only makes 3 of he 5 white blood cells there for needs regular blood transfusions, and antibiotics cause she picks up the least wee thing easily her immune system is terrible, she has cerebal palsy in her arms and we wont find out if she has hemihypertrophy til the cast comes off, plus she was back on oxygen last week at night, but shes still happy little baby xx

its horrible to think that after going through all of this she still might need an osteotomy  thats the part that i hate most about all of this - there is no final date - its all just we will see how she is doing in aug/sept etc - if i think of any more q's for you i will let you know!

Claire emmas cast is the same, but we have a big bean bag that we can prop her up so she is sitting up and i brought a little breakfast tray table and its perfect  - good luck with the cast change - hope you are both doing well x

I had a hard time accepting that this isn't a fix, just an improvement, and that there will need to be more done to properly correct her hip. At first I was completely 'if she's going to have to have an osteotomy anyway, why not just skip the cast and go to that??' But I try to understand that the better her hip is before the next surgery, the less they'll have to do and the better chance of the surgery working. Or at least that's my best understanding.

You've had an awfully hard time of it Claire, I hope that you get some good news soon!

We're on the home stretch, Friday is almost here! Fingers crossed nothing happens between now and then to prevent the cast coming off...

oh not long til friday keep yourself busy and it will be here before you know it!! if Ellie has hemihypertorphy she will need osteotomay every 2 years for life as her leg will always continue to grow quicker than the other one so fingers crossed its "just" the hip problem xx

Hii not read through any other post as it's difficult to see on my phone. But anyway, I'm Katie and I took my LO to be checked at doctors today, and he found that the creased in her legs wernt the same.. So something to do with her hips. I'm waiting for an appointment at the hospital.
If my results come back not as I want them (hoping everything is fine) how did you cope with LO wearing a cast? :/

hello again!!!! your LO might not have to go as far as the cast if they have caught it this early, it may be the case of wearing a harness - this one is not too bad, it is made of soft material, and babygros can easily fit over it - my eldest - Lucy - had to wear it for 3 months and then she was grand. The cast is not as bad is it first looks (i would post a pic but all the photos got wiped off the computer - my fault! :dohh:) the nappy is the trickest part but apart from that Emma is proped up with pillows and cushions - but dont start worrying yet, first of all see what the hospital say - it could be nothing (hopefully) :hugs:

Ok so just found a pic of emma in her cast - you will probably go OMG when you see it and then cry, BUT it may not get to this - i have posted two pics - 1st one so you can see the cast fully and the 2nd one so you can see that she is happy and not bothered by it - please please please dont worry xxxx sorry i dont have any of Lucy in the harness on this computer xx

Awww she's well cute!! And it doesn't look to bother her at all! :).. I prob am looking into things too much (i cant help it, i worry too much lol) and like you say she may not have to go as far as a cast! (well I hope she doesn't have to have anything lol)

hi its honestly not too bad (for them) lol Ellie diesnt seem to fussed and she still goes in her door bounce, add me on facbebook Claire Andrews and you will see her I have LOADS of pics and she is doing great

As for the hemihypertorphy with Ellie thats a chromosome problem and nothing to do with the hip problem so Ellie is just got a few extra problems xx

Your daughter is really young, and they will most likely try the harness first on her, at her age there's a good success rate. My daughter was 10 months when she was diagnosed, and I think I cried (on and off) for a week when they told me she would have to go into the cast. But in my profile pic, DD is in her cast. She's still lovely and happy and the cutest baby ever (in my biased opinion). It really sucks, this hip thing, but you get through it because you have to. I'm only days away from DD getting her cast off, and I'm really looking forward to it!

Claire, how did Ellie's cast change go?

hi yeah it went ok but we were there for 8 and was taken to the theatre at 11am so Ellie was getting cranky but they gave us the key to the snoozelen room (sensory lights) Ellie loves it as she has that for her CP. Then she was away for 2 hours instead of the 40 mins they said, but thats because they never weighed her and gave her too much GA so she never woke for ages, they gave her the amount for an 8 month old but of course Ellie is 5lbs lighter than the "average" 8 month old. The consulant said the xray showed no change :( so thats upset me and the cast is set much wider, but Ellie is still smiling away xx

:saywhat: thats not right, surely the 1st thing they should do is weight her??

:hugs: about there being no change, but fxd that there is improvement this time, really glad that Ellie is happy - it makes it seem not quite so bad, does she still fit into her car seat etc in the new cast, hope you are both doing ok xx

Alias, so happy to hear your baby gets the cast off soon!!! How exciting :)

Claire, I am so sorry there has been no progress at your last visit. Hopefully the new cast does the trick.

hel_5, so both of your DDs had hip dysplasia? Was it because they were breech? I want to have a 2nd child but am very nervous he or she will have ddh too. Our son had it because of his breach position.

kandbump, I attached a picture of Mason in his harness. He was in the harness 24/7 for the first 6 weeks and then slowly weaned off of it. He is now doing really well and only wears the harness at night. At first it was very overwhelming and upsetting but it really is much easier to deal with than the cast and I feel lucky the harness is working for us. His last ultrasound showed "normal" hips so if the next xray looks good, we will be completely done with all treatments. I am hoping and praying it is a good xray.

Anyway, I think about you ladies all the time and hope your babies are doing well. This is such a frustrating condition because nothing is for sure. And the process of getting it fixed seems to take so long.

Hi Deeni - no neither of my girls were breech - they think it is congenital (gentic) even though neither any of mine of DH's family have any history of it but together we dont seem to have v good hip genes! (iykwim?) I will be honest i was petrified when they came round at the hospital to check her hips (which were fine then, we think it came out a little later on) but i dont think there is much you can do about it - if we have a 3rd I would seriously consider asking for the LO to be put into the harness for 3 months (like lucy) rather than the hip come out later on and have to go through casts again, but i dont know  But they do check your 2nd a lot more if there sibling has had DDH - which means if there are any probs then they will be picked up sooner, good luck TTC:winkwink:

Appointment landed on the door step just after you replied! Spooky! So, we've got the pre op assessment next Thursday and the closed reduction on the 4th August which is the following Thursday, so, 2 weeks tomorrow! Only just stopped crying and now I'm on my 2nd bar of chocolate, I'm such a comfort eater.

So, any tips on what to get ready and take into hospital?

It's good to get the appointment, at least you have a date to work towards. To bring to the hospital, I'd suggest
* Vests a size too big. A dress to go over if you want.
* long socks (I like the ones from tesco and H&M, light but long)
* nappies in a size too big, normal sized and a size small. You won't know what fits the inside of the cast until it's on, but the big ones should be good for the outside.
* Bottles for LO when they are out of surgery. Food if she's on food, but stuff they like and is easy to digest.
* favorite snuggle toys
* Portable DVD if your LO is into that sort of thing. It's times like this I wish we'd gotten DD addicted to a TV show :)
* A snack for you and your partner.
* A towel, blanket or pillow for use in their buggy. You won't know how they'll fit things until they're in the cast, so you might need to 'modifiy' as you go.

That's what I can think of off the top of my head, I'm sure others will have things to suggest too! Good luck, I promise the cast isn't quite as bad as it seems. But I'm really glad to be getting rid of it :)

Everything that Alais said, ask them at the re-op app about your car seat - you may need to get a new one. Also a newspaper - or something to distract you when she's in the op and CHOCOLATE - for you not for LO but if you are anything like me i suddenly realised when she was in theatre that i needed to eat something and chocolate was all i could manage!!

Im sending lots of :hugs::hugs::hugs: when you get over the inital shock it really is ok, and remember if you need any advise or have any questions just ask x
