Hip Babies / Hip Dysplasia

Well we had our checkup the other day and the good news is that Mason's hips look normal!! Yay. We only have 4 more nights in the harness and then we go back in 4 months for an xray. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he continues to look normal as the doctor said roughly 20% of babies do not continue to grow normally and need other treatment. Trying so hard to be positive and I cannot wait to get rid of the harness.

The doctor does want us to go to physical therapy for his torticollis which has gotten better but it still noticeable. He also wants us to see a cranial specialist since Mason has a flat spot on one side of his head. I will be so sad if he has to wear a helmut since he just go rid of the harness!! I was very upset at first that there are more doctor's appointments in our future but I am to get used to it. I am just hoping that everything is ok with Mason's head and that there is nothing serious going on. I read on the internet about craniosynostosis and now I am fearing the worst. Must stay off google!!!!!!!

aw fabby on the hips, Ellie too has torticollus and with her physio it isnt getting any better so once the hip cast is off its an op to cut the tendon in her neck also with the helmet Ellie has plagiocephaly, mishapen head due to the way she lies because of her torticollus and we have been told that the helmet doesnt work and once she is up on her feet etc the head shape will sort itself out xx

Hi everyone, glad your all getting on ok.
On Thursday we will be 3 weeks into spica - that's a quarter of the way through! It's going so quickly. Unfortunately the count down to spica coming off is the same count down for me going back to work :o(. I shoudl just have a week of spica free Sophie before going back.

Sophie still seems to be coping really well, and has been sleeping through 7-8 without a dream feed!!!! Yay!!! However, she has now learned to turn herself round 90 degrees in her cot! How? I have no idea, so she sometimes wakes to be turned back, as she sleeps with a pillow under her head and shoulders and rolled up towels under her legs that would otherwise be in the air.

We had our first stupid comments when we were away, some awful girl came upto me and said "how the hell did your baby brake both er legs?!" I said she hadn't, and walked away...rude woman!

i'd have said she did it skateboarding!!:haha:
that would have shut her up!!!

Of course we don't mind, although hopefully you won't be staying! I can see why you'd worry, I'd want to get her checked out too. It could still be nothing, but I'm a worrier. I'm scared of when I have a second child that we'll have to go through all this again. It's great though that your older daughter is doing so well, I like to hear success stories!

Good luck with the consultant, let us know what he says.

Thank you, i'll keep you posted.

im not online that much, but will try and keep up.

:sick::sick::sick:

I left the girls down stairs playing whilst i did a few jobs, come back and emma is half way across the floor, eating her pooey nappy  she got it out of a bag and everything, now she has poo on the inside AND outside of her cast :dohh:

Claire good luck with the cast change (its soon isnt it???) fxd that there has been improvement

Alais hows ellie getting on in her brace?

MrsWatson i hope you have had no more stupid comments :hugs:

Hiya, things are going well here. Ellie is pretty happy to be moving about the place. Barely stops to play with her toys because she's too busy wandering around to see if she can get in trouble :) I've been baby proofing... On Friday I told DH I want a baby gate for the top of the stairs. Yesterday E decided to go investigate the stairs while DH had his back turned, all I heard was 'Ellie, where are you going? Ellie, no! <me>, we need a baby gate!'

We've also been taking her swimming once a week, and she now enjoys that too. It seems to be helping, her right hip will now move a lot more, although she still prefers to keep her legs in a 'newborn' tucked position. She's also great at getting her feet in her mouth when we're changing her. She's not weight bearing at all, but I'd say it's not far off. I'm almost looking forward to her checkup in October, I'm pretty optimistic that she's doing well. And if he does try to say she needs more surgery, I'm going to need a bit of convincing. Her hip was just SOCLOSE at the last check...

Big hugs, don't know how you cope with the same cast for that long, we're 5 weeks into cast and it's already getting really tight.

Over the past 4 weeks, Sophie has been waking up between putting her to bed (7pm) and about midnight and it seems like she is having a nightmare.

She starts crying suddenly, and when we go in to her, she still has her eyes shut tight, we literally have to wake her to stop her crying, this usually takes about 5 minutes, we usually have to put the lights on and walk around with her. Once she opens her eyes and sees us, she stops crying and starts smiling. We then just put her back in her cot and she either goes straight back to sleep or chats to herself for a while before going back to sleep.

So, we're not up fr long, and it never seems to happen after midnight, I think the latest it has happened is 11.45pm.

Just wondered if anyone elses LO does this? My mum suggested it might be something she's eating, but I make all of her food, the only processed food she has is dairylee, fromage frais, bread, butter and rice cakes.

It'll be close, maybe you can convince them to take the cast off a week early since this one is a week longer? We got Ellie's cast off over a week early because of travel we'd scheduled before she went into it... Wait and see how her hip is doing with this cast change, they can change their minds about these things sometimes! 25 weeks is a LONG time for casts?

yeah she has it on for what seems like forever and if one more person tells me not long now and its for the best that have no idea what the situation is like then i will not apologize for my actions!!! ive had enough now, as for Ellie and the cast getting tight cause she is a little older she isnt growing as fast as she did in previous casts and she also has other medical conditions that is stunting her growth at the moment, long story dont ask just another bloody thing to add to her medical conditions, anyway thanks for understanding girls and listening to me moaning x

Sophie had her cast change last week, and after being told several times that she would only be in cast for a maximum of 12 weeks, we found out that after 12 weeks she will go into a broomhandle plaster for another 3 weeks.

I know in the grand scheme of things another 3 weeks isn't long, but I'd planned to go back to work a week after her coming out of plaster, which now means the childminder will have to look after her in plaster. It seems silly, but I wanted to look after her until she was plaster free. I was also looking forward to my last week off work with her plaster free so that I could take her swimming etc...

Sorry, moan over.

How are all the little ones getting on? Those now out of spica, were they ok afterwards, or dd it take them a while to settle to having wobby legs again??!!

That does really suck. The only benefit is at least it's broomstick, and supposedly that's easier to manage for the minder because there's nothing around the waist. Back to normal nappies! But they really should have told you that.

We're doing pretty well here. DD isn't walking or even putting weight on her legs, but she's got at least another month in the brace so that's not too surprising. But she's moving around really well, and getting so independent. This morning she threw a fit because she wanted to 'crawl' around on the drive, and I picked her up to put in the car. When we got to the creche I let her schuffle her way down the hall to the classroom, and she was happier then :)

My worry now is that I want to get her up on her feet SOON, because we've just found out she's got a sibling on the way. Only early days, I'm just over 5 weeks, but I'm concerned about having to carry around a toddler while pregnant. And my DH has started a new job this week which he's totally stressing over and we had a big fight last night about him being home late every day so far. At dinner last night E asked about 6 times where Daddy was.

Sorry, that became my own little moan there as well, but I have no one to moan to cause obviously the baby thing is hush hush!

hi all cant remember the last thing I wrote in here so sorry if I repeat

Ellie got her cast changed on the 13th Sept and was away at theatre for nearly 3 hours and when she came back she had oxygen, knew then something wasnt right. Anyway was sitting with her chit chatting away to Peter and she was bouncing up and down on my knee and the anesthetist came in to the ward, so he said that he was glad to see Ellie bouncing about as he got a real fright with her, when they took the tube out that helps them breathe when under anesthetic her body wouldnt breathe on her own for a good 10 mins he had to tube her again and keep trying. So now he is concerned, its happened twice now, that she is wither allergic to anesthetic or had an underlying heart problem!! Waiting on an appointment with heart specialist

but......... we are booked in for the Friday clinic on the 4th Nov to have cast removed!!!! fingers crossed Ms Short hope that the xray will show it can come off cause they dont want to risk a general anesthetic again til we have had a heart scan etc

Glad to hear all is doing well and hopefully we have cast free and walking babies soon!!! xx

Ooh congrats Alias - im sure she will be walking in no time at all!

We finally got a date through for Emmas cast removal - 12th Oct (she would have been in it for over 10 weeks by then) so i rang them and although our consultant is on hols (nice for some!) the plaster nurses are going to take the cast off, x-ray her and put her in the brace - NEXT WEEK!!!!!!! wahoo!!!!!!! we will have to go up to Dublin again to see the consultant but at least we will have the brace off!!!
