Home Birthers & Hopefuls!

I told her that I wont be screaming! We had a long conversation about it. She doesnt want to stay and TBH I'm happy with that because she is a natural 'flapper' and if there is anything more than a moan or a hint of needing to transfer, she will literally melt down - and I dont need that.

ah well its her decision. You never know, she might actually change her mind. I was at the birth of my little brother (i was 13). I didnt want to at first but when i got to the hospital i changed my mind as i was curious. I remember finding it quite boring (my mum never screamed or anything and was nothing like how women gave birth off tv!!) but it was emotional seeing my little brother come out and i believe it is the reason now that we have a huge bond. She probably doesnt want to see you in pain. That part of it isnt nice.

MM, that's great that you've talked things through with your daughter and you're both happy with her decision :)

Also, I know you said that you are going to Hypnobirthing lessons - could I pick your brain....
I have just over a month 'til EDD, and wondered if I'd left it too late to get a book and CD (I saw your links in the third tri post - ta very much!!) I'm thinking that by the time I order them etc. I may potentially only have a couple of weeks and wondered if this was long enough??
I am unable to get to classes, so would need to just do what I could from home, do you think it would be worth it?? Also, I assume you can use the hypnobirthing technique in a pool - sorry, that's probably a ridiculous question lol!! Xxxx

Havent looked on here in a few days and looks like ive missed loads!

Just a quickie re big(ger) baby's and home births...Oscar was 9lb 1oz and we had no problems what so ever, not even so much as a stitch.

I agree with earlier posts about your body producing a baby the 'right' size for you and I honestly dont think a bigger baby means a more complex labour/birth.

I am terrified that this baby will be breech however, dont ask me why but I keep having dreams/flashes of me having to labour in hospital. I dont imagine it in a bad way as such, no emergency transfer or anything but something like a breech baby or low lying placenta (which thankfully I know I dont have after my scan).

I suppose I just want to have another homebirth so badly, I am worried something will go wrong to mess it up!

I think every little helps! And yes, hypnobirthing and water birth actually go beautifully together. There are some wonderful videos on youtube, like this one (my favourite):

I've been doing some research and I think I'm going to take a hypnobabies class instead of a hypnobirth class. I'm excited, I am going to go in for a free consultation with DH first. Hopefully I can take it in the next month or two so that I have tons of time to practice. :)

I am planning on having a birthing tub and birth ball here, but I'm also considering renting a TENS machine. Is anyone else considering using a TENS machine?

I think there's a few of us that have used/are using TENS. I've never used one, but I have mine bought (only £30) and ready to go.

If all goes well im having a homebirth :happydance: and plan to use a TENS machine and birthing stool

Speaking of birthing stools, I need to figure out where to get one from! There seem to be only a handful of places that sell or hire them, and both prices are astronomical! The only reasonably priced (£25) one that I found was for hire but was in Hampshire. Anyone know of any good deals?

I thought of asking the midwife if I'd be able to borrow one from the hospital's birthing centre. I'm next due to see her at 36+6 (and she'll be bringing round my home birth pack then), so I don't know if I should ask then or before.

I agree with Shifter - it's definitely worth while even at this stage. Even just reading the book would be very useful. It talks about how your body reacts to fear and the production of adrenalin during labour and what you can do to help your body rather than make labour hard for it. It's so simple and enlightening to think of it this way so even reading the book (which I didnt put down till I'd finished it in a couple of days!) will give you a great mindset for your labour. And as Shifter said it's great for using in the pool!

This my favourite hypno-water home birth from youtube :)

Is anyone else considering using a TENS machine?

I used TENS last time and will again this time. I really liked it and it served me well for about 6 hours until I started using G&A :)

Speaking of birthing stools, I need to figure out where to get one from!

My MW wrote on my home birth forms 'bring birth stool'. I asked if I could borrow one and she said no problem! The form is on my file so that when I call in to say I'm in labour, they will bring G&A and the stool. I was really pleased because the are so expensive!!

Hello all :hugs:

I'm so glad i found you! I had my 1st at in 1995 then had my 4th at home last April And i hope if all goes well to have no5 at home in september!:happydance:

All 4 of my babies have been born in a pool and i LOVE waterbirths!!

Here is my last homebirth story.

I had my little boy at home on tuesday (28th April 2009) after him keeping us waiting 10 extra days!! I went for a sweep on monday (27th) and was told they couldn't do it as my cervix still was high and closed!! So i was then convinced i was going to have to be induced and have to go to hospital! but then....

I woke up at 2am having a strong contraction and about 5 mins later another so i decided to get up and keep moving in the hope it would keep going!! I didn't wake my DH as i wasn't sure i was in labour as the contractions were all over the place some times 2-3 mins apart then 15-18 mins?? But by the time my DH got up for work at 5am they were much more regular and strong.

So he then phoned the midwife and started filling the pool! while i phoned my mom to come and sit with the kids when they woke up. Then he put on my TENS machine (i had never used one before but i did find it good)I also lit a burner with lavender oil in that was also really nice.:flower:

The midwife arrived at about 6am and said i was already 7cm dilated!! so she phoned the second midwife. I asked at this point for G&A but she could not get it working!! and i could not get into the pool until the second midwife arrived! Thank god for the TENS!!

The second midwife arrived at about 6.45 and i got into the pool while she set up her G&A. It was HEAVEN to get into the pool!!

Very soon i could feel his head and he was born at 7.09am with my DH and my oldest DD (13) there my 2 lo's (3&4) woke up about 7am so mom was upstairs with them but they came straight down while we were still in the pool with the umbilical cord still attached!
He weighed 8lb 5oz and i didn't need any stitches!
By 8.30 the midwives had gone everything was tidy and i was sitting on the settee feeding my new LO!!:\) While cuddling my others! PERFECT!!

Good luck to you all and i hope we all get our homebriths
xx

I'm going to do the same thing then. She left a form in my handheld notes so she doesn't forget it for Friday. She said that it's what she'll fill in on Friday and then keep at the community midwives' office so that, if it's a midwife on-call that attends me, they'll know all they need to know. So, maybe I can get her to write something similar on that.

Lovely birth story, mrsmo7. Thanks for sharing!

Sounds like the same thing Manda. My MW said that they photocopy it and send it to all the community MWs and a copy for the birth centre so everyone knows your requirements :)

Lovely story Mrsmo7!

Hi ladies, I've been watching all the shows on tv like babes in the wood, deliver me, home birth stories etc. My DS who is 7 soon was watching one with me with a waterbirth and I have to say it's one of the more graphic ones( they don't all show everything) My first thought was to turn it off quick but he was totaly engrosed in it. It showed a shot of the head crowning and then the baby being born. All he said was "is that what the big paddling pools for?" I was surprised when he then asked "where will I be when Nyah's born?"
So I simply said where do you want to be...you can be there if you want to and see her being born like that or you can stay upstairs with Sarah (our older DD) or you can go to Nana's. (normally the mention of a stay at Nana & Grandad's is a sure winner) But he said he wanted to be there? I did'nt push the subject as I know how he changes his mind from one minute to the next. But now I'm a little worried Seing some stranger on tv giving birth will be a whole world different to seeing his own mum do it I'm worried he'll stress out if i'm in pain and then there will be all the problems that could go with that. But I've tried it from loads of angles and told him "but what if mummy cries cause it hurts?" and he just said its ok I'll be brave for you!! I think deep down he would be ok I'm just worried that if it gets too much for him he's gonna have to be taken away, and the person who he most needs at a time like that will be me and I'm not gonna be able to just take 5 and comfort him properly, but on the other hand I don't want to talk him out of being there and have him felt pushed away from me anyway. So now I was just gonna play it by ear and see what happens. He was born in the night and my DD slept though it and he woke her up crying, so maybe it will just b like that again and I can tell him I did'nt want to wake him????
Anyone else had other children of a similar age there at a birth or have any advise. All greatly welcome Thanx in advance Dee

Dee, one of the births I saw as a student nurse the lady had her 7 year old daughter in with her. She knew that she would labour quickly and easily and that her daughter would be ok with it. the girl managed really well and was very excited and interested. She came down to look at baby's head when it was crowning and just accepted that this is how things are.

----

I have just had my home visit and I'm all go for my home birth!

My Midwife has brought the bag of supplies and placenta bin around. She has gone through everything we need to know, reasons for transfer ect. MIL was there and appears to have majorly chilled about the home birth thing. I think hearing just how cautious the midwives are has given her piece of mind and she can now be a great advocate for the birth.

Apparently my gas and air will only last about 2-3 hours. So I have to manage with other methods for as long as possible, which is fine with me.

Oh, how exciting, Celesse!!! Mine's on Friday afternoon (after a presentation scan first thing in the morning). I'm hoping I get good news as well. That's brilliant that your MIL is more at ease now. I'm hoping it'll help my DH to hear us talking, too.

Did you have to sign anything? And, just out of curiosity, are you "allowed" to have a home birth from 37 weeks? (I noticed a few areas say they won't attend before 38 weeks and was relieved to hear that mine are happy to from 37 weeks.)

Oh Celesse!! So exciting!! I wonder who will be the first on this thread to get their HB??!!

Manda - My MW said they will attend from 37 wks here. :)

Good to hear they're sensible in your area, MM!

Who's the furthest along (not that that always matters!)? Celesse is 3 days ahead of me. Should we have a list of user names and EDDs in the OP like we do for the months in 3rd Trimester?

27th February, and I'm expecting a boy (he'd better be with all the blue I've now washed and ironed!).
