My little guy has oral thrush and i've been told to give him 1ml once a day. But she didn't say for how long..

Anyone any idea? I'm also buying daktarin for myself and LO incase thrush creeps up again :flow: xx

It's usually until the bottle is finished if the thrush isn't long gone by then you'll need to get another one as ideally it should continue to be given at least 3-4 days after symptoms have gone xx

Ah okay thankyou, i'm not sure whether i should change him to Daktarin Oral gel or just continue with the nystatin as i'm going on daktarin cream myself. :flow: xx

I think the gel can be a choking hazard to young babies, were on our 5th bottle of nystatin now as we can't seem to get rid if it xx

Ah okay thankyou i think i'll just stick with the nystatin for LO and get daktarin for myself and fluconazole. Thrush is tricky business :flow: xx

Daktarin gel is fine as long as you make sure it is carefully applied. My GP always oked it. I would persevere with nystatin for now but if it doesn't work then try the gel. Some thrush strains are resistant to nystatin and this has been the case since the 1960s xx

ah thankyou :) it's insane how much conflicting advice you get when it comes to breastfeeding haha :) suppose it's the same with alot of things baby related. :) thanks again! i'll try daktarkin gel if once the bottle of nystatin has finished it's not helped. :) :flow: xx

They said to only give it once a day? I don't think that's often enough to get rid of it. I would say keep using on both of you until symptoms have gone a week.

The gel has been delicensed for babies under 4 months old due to risk of choking but my GP said as long as you rub little bits at a time on instead of whacking a big glob in their mouth they'll be fine x

They didn't say how often to give it.. on the leaflet it says 1ml 4x daily but in the case of newborns it may be given 1ml once daily.. or something along those lines. :) So no idea! lol i think i'll give them a call tomorrow :flow: xx

I give my little man 4 x 1ml of nystatin daily and I use the oral gel on my boobies 4 x daily. This is my second lot of treatment!! It won't budge. :( as soon as I think it's gone the pain is back. X

Is that a typo? The oral gel won't work on nipples as it's not absorbed into the skin.

Really? :( the doctor and health visitor both told me to use that! Maybe that's why I'm still having to use it. She told me not to use canesten. What do you recommend? X

You can get a daktarin cream for skin, which has the same medicine but is absorbed. My friend was told to use the gel on her too and it didn't do anything, then she switched and it went within a week, GPs can be so useless with bf!

You can also use canesten, or a cream with the same medicine in. Some people are told they then have to rinse it off before bf (which may be why they told you not to use it?), but my GP said you just need to wipe off any visible, which there never is because it's absorbed so quickly.

Thanks so much for ur advice. I have rung the health visitor to check what she suggests again. But I'm off to the doctors for my 6 week check tomoz so I'm going to talk to her again and see if I can change or do something to get rid of it once and for all!!
:) x

Yep the oral gel not only won't be absorbed but it can cause blocked ducts. Xx

Hhhmmmm. The HV told me that I'm on the right treatment. What do I do? Will the gp know?? I really want to get this cleared up ASAP. I really want to breastfeed for as long as I can so i need to be on the right treatment.

Really appreciate the advice x

I have had thrush with both my boys and it can be a nasty nasty beast!! After weeks of nystatin prescribed by family dr with my first I went to the pediatrician...he told me to "wash, dry, then apply" the nystatin cream to my nipples after every feed, and to rub the liquid onto baby's cheeks and mouth with a qtip after every feed....not to worry about making the 1ml, more focus on rubbing it in. However nystatin wast enough on its own and I also had to use he gentian violet and I used grapefruit seed extract in the laundry and boiled my bras and pacifiers every use!

With this son, none of that was enough!! We have both been on probiotics and I was using gentian violet again but on top of all of that had to use fluconazole and I started taking grapefruit seed extract orally (6 pills per day) and swabbed baby's mouth with the gse (15-20 drops in 1 oz water) And I got a prescription for dr newmans nipple ointment. I had to print off the Candida Protocol from dr jack newmans website to convince the dr to prescribe the fluconazole as both drs I saw were reluctant to do so but I just finished the prescription and i *think* it's finally gone but I will keep taking the gse and using it on baby for another week or two to be sure...in terms of timeframe with this baby the thrush was diagnosed at 4 weeks and he is now 3.5 months! But rest assured that nystatin is known to be a very safe medication. Once a day probably won't do much to get rid of it though, and it's good that you have some cream now for you too or else you could just pass it back and forth.

It wont let me post the link to dr jack newmans site bc this is my first bnb post but if you google "jack Newman candida protocol" you should find it.

Ive never posted on here before but bc of my two lengthy experiences with thrush, I HATE it and it sounds like some of the moms here are going through the same thing...

You can buy the daktarin cream over the counter, in this area they won't prescribe it for thrush anyway as it can be bought in pharmacies and they only prescribe truly prescription only items. Use the daktarin cream as you have been the gel xx

ETA: print out this leaflet and give to the HV it clearly says the oral gel should not be used on the nipples

Thanks for the post. Unfortunately OP and the other lady asking are in the UK and you cannot get the Jack Newman Nipple ointment mixed and prescribed here :( xx

My daughter had thrush in the mouth and I was given Nystatin for her, unfortunately the GP didn't give me anything for myself despite me not having any symptoms and not actually knowing that you could get thrush on the nipple so my daughter passed it to me, we then had a second bottle of Nystatin then I got cream (clotrimazole) for myself and I would say it took two weeks for mine to go away and in the end it took four bottls of Nystatin for my daughter to be clear of it. Keep persevering. I had to give 1ml four times a day after a feed.

I also read on the internet that cleaning the nipple with a bicarb soda/water solution will help kill it and I also ate probiotic yogurt everyday. All seemed to help and we finally got rid of it. I was also told to wash bra's, muslins etc at 60 degrees as thats the minimum temperature to kill thrush.
