How much for your rent/mortgage?

We live in a 1 bed flat, no parking or outside space in Dorset and pay £650 for our mortgage. A 1 bed flat would rent out for around £550 a month depending on location. A 3 bed house would cost around £850 - £950 a month. The joys of living by the sea!

We live in Penzance, Cornwall. Right opposite the beach. We have a 2 bedroom house with private parking, garden out the back and sort of garden thing out the front. Our rent is £595pcm.

I love it :flower:

I live in Scarborough North Yorkshire and pay £525 a month rent for a small 2 bed house. It's got a smallish back garden half taken up with the conservatory! A smallish front garden and a drive. X

How the bloody hell do you lot in London afford to live?! Seriously lol!! And that price fot flats too!! You could get a 4 bedroomed detached amazing house with humongous gardens, double garage etc in the Scarborough area for that money!! (Well burniston). Crazy!!

i pay £450pcm rent for a 2 bedroom tenement flat in the beautiful :)lol:) east end of glasgow. would love a garden but we can't afford to move at the moment and i would hate to not be so close to the city centre!

Ayrshire scotland £400 mortgage for a 3 bed semi detached with large front and rear garden in rural location.

i'm originally from ayrshire :hi:

@£1200 per month I also forgot to say that our flat is very damp and mouldy! You couldn't get a "nice" 2 bed flat around here for as "cheap" as we pay!

If you think my rent is a lot you should see what my childcare bill is going to be when I go back to work in a couple of months!!!!!

We could rent a nice place I'm sure where you are, but I would struggle to find work in my specialism, I would have to probably start a new career and take a big pay cut.

£1150 pcm for a 3 bed semi with garden. Brighton is really expensive, we used to pay £600 for a top floor one bed flat in central hove!

Hellooooo fellow Brighton resident - doesn't seem to be many of us on here!

:hi: Yes, it's because it's too expensive to live here!!! Love Brighton too much to move now!

Hahahaah yeah so true - are you in central brighton? I'm in the poets corner area of Hove but can't wait to move tbh this area is so affluent and quiet!

I never knew there were so many Londoners on here! I wishhhh I could move back to London so bad, its difficult to live in any other city in the UK without getting bored after a few years - I think the problem with being a Londoner is everywhere else will forever feel small in comparison!

I live close to Manchester and we have a 2 bed terraced house with a small garden for £320 PCM - which is cheap tbf (our landlord is just lovely) :)

Wowsers - housing costs are astronomical for a lot of you!

My mortgage here is 370 a month and I've got a roomy 3 bedroom house with yard at the front and massive back lawn. It's right out of town though, DH was commuting to Edinburgh and it was a total pain in the arse for him not to mention expensive (not as expensive as a house in town tho)

Looking at moving now back into Edinburgh, which actually shouldn't cost me horrible amounts because I have a good deposit, hopefully for a similar property to the one I am in now the mortgage won't be any more monthly than what I'm paying now.

$2600 for a 4 bed+office/5 bed. We're in San Diego and its pretty expensive here, we're not even on the beach (about 15min drive) so it gets even more expensive!

I live in Morpeth, Northumberland and pay £400 a month rent on a 2 bedroomed house the house is small though so looking into moving to a 3 bedroom house for around £500 a month :) I'm lucky because renting and house prices are very reasonable in Northumberland :)

We have 2 houses, I had mine baught before I met DH so that one is now rented, but I still have to pay €250 p.m on the mortgage as its rented through the Council who only pay me €650 max rent. Our family house DH had built before I met him, we pay €300 p.m mortgage on it, he did a lot of the work himself & had savings towards it so we're lucky the mortgage is fairly small on it.

We rent a 2 bed ground floor flat with parking and a garden. £460 a month.
It's not too bad but the second bedroom is a teeny tiny box room and the flat is a weird layout.
We live in Stafford, Staffordshire.

We live in Lancashire, I have family in London and my brother seriously considered several jobs there but I honestly don't believe that any inflated salary justifies the living costs. Out of interest what percentage of income is spent on the rent/mortgage?? Our mortgage is about 1/6th of overall income. There are other major cities around the UK that offer very attractive salaries where housing is more affordable. I do appreciate that not everyone can move though. We have a 4 bed detached house with gardens and have 2 other properties that we rent out too and charge £450 per month

I agree with you in a way. To answer your question, my OH is self employed and doesn't always earn the same each month so a bit hard to gauge. I suppose the rent is about 1/6th of our total income too, based on his earnings for the last year and my salary.

Regarding salaries in other cities, I think this really depends on your field. For example, I work for the NHS and I get £6200 per year London weighting (so an extra 500 a month compared to what I would be on outside of London), although even this is a bit misleading as SIL does the same job as me in a northern city and is actually on a band below me too. We do virtually the same job but I earn £12000 a year more than her, other colleagues that I meet from conferences etc who are doing similar work to me at hospitals outside of London seem to frequently be on the band (grade) below me and then less the London weighting too.
Though my OH is now self employed and we could move anywhere (and have been considering a possible relocation to Yorkshire) he previously worked for a city bank and could not have done his job outside of London. A lot of the big international banks only have an office in London.
If I was in a relationship with someone else in the NHS earning the same as me, we would possibly be £24000 a year better off in London than out. After tax I think that difference still covers higher rents, but perhaps doesn't help enough in terms of buying depending on where in London you are looking. So whilst I think the higher salary doesn't "justify" the increased costs, I think it almost/pretty much compensates.
Anyway, I am in two minds about relocation! I like the idea of moving to Yorkshire and buying a big house but think that a lot of other costs would be higher (for example we don't own a car and to buy one or two of those and insure, put petrol in etc seems expensive!). Plus I think I would miss having so much to do all the time on my doorstep.

I pay AU$1120, or 684 pounds, a month. I have a 3 bedroom with a built-on back rumpus, separate laundry/dining and a 2 car garage in the backyard. I'm in north-west Tasmania, so the rent here isn't terribly high by the rest of the country's standards.

£750 for a 2 bed first floor shoe box with communal garden which to be fair is a pretty decent garden something has to be I suppose, we are in Chelmsford Essex, only just moved here, in our last place we were paying £565 for a slightly bigger shoe box but no garden and drug dealers for neighbours so I cant complain I suppose

Ooohhhhh I'm in Chelmo too!

I love in south wales in a three bed terrace good size room and big garden mortgage is £406 a month
