I was wondering who has done this test?
I am supposed to have it done next week and I am worried about radiation damaging my reproductive organs. Also I read that the dye they inject can lead to inflammation and this can worsen the fallopian tubes/uterus.

Also, I read that the causes for blocked tubes is if you had surgery around that area in the past, or any infections. I have never had any type of surgery, nor any type of infection, so I wonder if it is worth going thru this test and risks...

I just want to start moving to next steps and my doctor wants me to do this test to rule out blocked tubes so we can move forward...

Please, if any of you have done this test, let me know if it changed your cycle or cause any problems... Also I read that it can increase the chances of conceiving the next couple of cycles as it flushes the tubes, did anybody conceive right after this test?

THANKS FOR READING!!

Didnt change my cycle and caused no problems or side effects. The radiologist who performed the test did say it can increase chances of ovulation for afew months after unfortunatley no iin my case

goodluck x

I have read quite a few posts about those that have been extra lucky within a month or two of having it done because it 'flushes the plumbing'. Have you had blood work done as well?

I went to have mine done and the Dr wasn't able to get through my cervix but I believe(along with my new FS) that it was due to the timing of the test. Was too early in my cycle so i didn't get to the part w/the dye.

The biggest thing is to RELAX as much as possible or you will make it painful for yourself. Think of it as one step closer to BABY! :)

Had this test done 2/14, it took a total of about 5 minutes. The radiation is very minimal. I would only worry about dye issues if you have had any in the past ... most people handle it just fine with zero side effects.

As far as increasing your fertility ... my RE informed me that you are 3 times more likely to conceive the first 3 months after the HSG is done. Then 2 times more likely the next 3 months.

I had this test done in 2007 as well and 2 months later I was pregnant.

I wouldn't worry too much about it ... it's super fast and they will monitor you for any side effects. My RE always prescribes a dose of antibiotics for the night before just to prevent any infection. I never had any issues after the test.

Good luck!!

Thank you so much for your answers...
Another thing I read is that it can be oil or water based... do you get to choose? I am not sure which one is better...

31andTrying, yes I had all the blook work done, and everything is fine... this is the last fertility test I need to do, but I have been avoiding it for so long, and I already want to start moving forward... like taking clomid- even though I ovulate on my own, I read it increases your chances of conceiving... or go ahead with the IUI... But I know my doc wont start anything until I have this HSG test done.... so I guess I just have to do it:shrug:

I dont care about the pain, I am only worried about the risk and the damage it could cause to my reproductive system, as it is an invasive procedure...

I wish you all the best in this journey, thank you again for your responses!!!

Also another quick question, which CD is better to do this test?
I ovulate around CD11-CD12, how early should I do it?
Is it ok to do it while you are on your period?

THANK YOU!!!

My doctor will only perform the HSG test CD6-CD10. I think that is a standard. I took 2 advils prior to the procedure and it was painless...not even uncomfortable in the least bit.

I had this test, its one of the first tests they do for infertility...was a breeze as well :) I took two nurofen and it was painless a bit crampy for about 10 seconds and that was it. I was told if my tubes were blocked I might feel more cramping or pressure but I was clear so it was a breeze.

I too was told my chances for concieving might be increased after I had the test for a few cycles because it can clear everything out but I didn't get pregnant..Good Luck

Hi! I had this test done last summer and it went well. I definitely second the recommendation of taking ibuprofen/advil before. I took 800mg and felt pressure and cramping but it was tolerable due to my having taken the medication beforehand. I think the anticipation was the worst part. I think earlier in your cycle is better and before ovulation bc they don't want to chance your being pg. I did have to take a pg test before, but that won't really tell you much if nothing had implanted yet..but oh well.. I think they have to, to cover themselves in case you know? Anywa, good luck and I agree with thinking of it as one step closer to your goal! Also, it is necessary before IUI because if the tubes are blocked the IUI is pointless you know? Best of luck!

I've had this test done in Oct 2010 and had no issues at all. I took the Advil before and yes it was crampy and uncomfortable feeling but other than that no issues at all.

I too was told that my chances of conceiving would improve after and so far no luck hopefully you will have more luck than DH and I have had.

I had my test done around CD11 before I ovulated..I think the common days are between CD6-CD11. I know I was at the later end of it because we had a long weekend here so it was close :)

Ive not had any problems since although mine was very painful! It only lasts a few minutes though. I was told i had to be past my period otherwise they couldnt do it, and had to have a pg test right before it to be sure. I was all clear, luckily! :)

Good luck! :hugs:
