Well Findlay is anyway.
He's finally back out of hospital after 3 1/2 weeks and 4 general anaesthetics but he's on formula He was initially put on it when he was allowed to have a bit of milk (he spent 2 1/2 weeks on specialist nutrition going into a vein that cost over £1000 a day ) as it is special formula that has already been broken down into amino acids so it's very easy for him to absorb (which was obviously important after stomach/bowel surgery)
The dietician said as he is 7 months old and has no solids (we're working to overcome his oral aversion) he needs the extra protein in the formula as breast milk protein levels get lower as he gets older whereas this formula is designed to be a sole source of nutrition if it needs to be and he needs a protein boost as now he has had his surgeries he is starting to put weight on properly for the first time in his life!!
He is currently on 100% formula but from next week the dietician is going to start the slow process of moving him over to bolus feeds of EBM through his tube during the day (just 1-2 30ml bolus feeds a day to start with and gradually build them up) and a continuous feed of the formula overnight for the extra boost.
I can't believe how much of a faff formula is to make up with the whole waiting for kettles to cool down for 30mins etc!
I actually got asked to take a load of my milk home from the hospital as I'd filled over half of their freezer and they were running out of room We've now got 2 drawers full in our house and a big drawer full at my OH's parents house so I think I'm going to have to dump the oldest stuff so I've got room for the fresh stuff!
Hopefully it won't be too long before he's back on EBM during the day as I'm hating him being on 100% formula as he has been on only EBM until last week and I was so pleased to have got this far expressing. Unfortunately the overnight formula feed is going to be long term
