Induction cancelled due to lack of beds at 42 weeks!

This is so annoying hun.

When i went overdue with DS in 2009 they wanted me to ring in on the day and then they would tell me what time to go in. I was told a couple of times that they were too busy, until around 2-3pm they said yes come in. But i was speaking to another woman at the time (on another forum) who was also going thru this same process at the same hospital and she was due to go in on the same day as me. But she ended up getting fobbed off all day and the next day even went in but then was turned away because they didnt have room!

I think its appauling i really do. But this is the goverments fault, by cutting our maternity services and now we are suffering.

Fingers crossed they can maybe get you in later today or even better you set off by yourself xxx

Thanks for this, hon :) You know, I'd heard of this but thought it was quite rare. The midwife this morning said it happens a LOT - and yes, it's because the gov't cut services and then we wonder how an already busy hospital can't manage with several extra towns of hormonal, pregnant and stressed women to deal with..... I've calmed down now, after people on here have helped me so much, and have got into bed with three cats to hug like teddies till the ward call me back haha x

did you say yes to the sweep honey?

it is awful having to wait extra weeks for baby, i know i have done!!!

but you cant give birth on the floor!

just try all the old wives tale tricks to get baby out naturally and long walks.

xx:hugs:

I know how you feel, sorta. I had a similar situation but mine wasn't that extreme.

My dr induced me with my first as I had really high blood pressure and he was past his due date, right as we were fixing to leave (about an hour before my induction was scheduled since it takes a while to get to the hospital) the hospital called me and said they didn't have any bed avaliable and that I would have to wait. They called me back only 5 hours later so it wasn't that bad..My induction was scheduled for 11 pm but I got in the next day at 4 am got checked in and did vitals and an internal and all that and began the induction about 4:30.

Hopefully they can get you in sooner but if It was me I would be calling every few hours to see if they had any room yet.

I am anticipating another induction this time around just before my due date (due to previous complications with my first, I honestly think they let me go too long with my blood pressure so high) even though history isn't repeating itself at this point I'm just afraid it might turn last minute.

I won't be given a definite answer until my dr checks at 39 weeks to see if I am favorable but if I do get the induction I am really hoping I don't have this issue again, it seems like september and october are really busy months compared to january. Plus since my induction would be elective and not "necessary" (even though the dr thinks it might be beneficial for me for whatever reason) its definitely not priority to the hospital and my hospital only has 6 labor rooms and 2 c section rooms. Infact had to go to triage for monitoring yesterday and they were full! luckily though someone was just fixing to leave so I didn't have to wait too long.. Hopefully I won't be pushed back for my induction (assuming baby doesn't come on her own before that is scheduled) atleast not more than a couple hours again.

Sorry to bore you with my story lol I really hope they get you in soon! I know it sucks to wait, especially when you are overdue and drs are worrying about the baby's health :(

I would be kicking up a massive fuss if i was you sweet.
42 weeks is the max for going over.
Its supposed to be 11 days now but they do push it.
Is there no other hospital?

x

Aaw, that's disappointing - I don't understand the logic behind cancelling the first in line either! Seems a bit backwards. Hopefully they'll get you in soon though.

I would just say though, as a lady who also felt 'a bit unwell' at the end of her last pregnancy and had it turn out the be an infection that would have resulted in serious consequences for both of us (blood poisoning for me, meningitis, celebral palsy or death for Joe) had it been left another 6 hours instead of caught when it was, it might seem a trivial reason to us for admitting someone, but it's something the doctors usually do take very seriously. As they should.

You never know, this delay might mean you end up going naturally anyway! :hugs:

im keeping my fingers crossed for you hun seen as theres no replies on her lately. Maybe they got you in after all x x x x x

Hi All!

Thanks so much for all your kind messages and support!

Just a quick update - I rang induction ward at 3.30pm as they hadn't gotten back to me. They said they'd managed to clear several beds but they were massively understaffed with only 2 midwives for the entire floor, so it wasn't safe to call me in today. They then told me to go to the local birthing centre at 5pm where they arranged for me to have a check and a sweep.

The midwife there was absolutely LOVELY - spent ages talking me through what would happen and did a sweep. Haha - it was a whole different experience from last week's! The one I had from my midwife last Monday was over in seconds and was less uncomfortable than a smear, making me wonder why I'd been bothered. This one had me screwing my eyes shut and sweating instantly like a big red lobster!. She said she'd given me three really good sweeps with two fingers and that I must have a really good pain tolerance, as I hadn't squealed when she'd been extra vigorous. Said it was a good sign for labour tolerance, so that made me feel better! It's amazing how 'people skills' can make things seem less stressful! She did loads of checks on me and made me feel wholly reassured for today :)

They've booked me in for induction again tomorrow at 10am, (this may not happen if staffing issues don't resolve) BUT, midwife at sweep said I am now dilated to 2cm and thatthe sweep was as vigorous as it could be to get things underway asap. Baby's heart rate was fine both before and after, her fluid levels still intact and fine, and she says baby feels a really good size and is not distressed at all at this point.

Feeling better than this AM thanks to this and to all of you - thanks!

Fingers crossed I go naturally this evening! No twinges yet ;) x

Aw superb! And 2cm that's great news! Well done for being so brave too come on baby time to leave now! Really hoping things progress for u :)

oh that sounds positive hun! Give it a few hours then and you might be suprised! And if nothing by then at least you have another opportunity for tomorrow morning, but obv as you know theres no garrantees with that one. At least they are not leaving you for days before trying to get you in. xxxx

We will keep our fingers crossed for you that it happens sooner. I will be checking for updates. Can't have my due date buddy waiting any longer!! :hugs:

Totally agree with you - and I'd have cancelled me too, in that situation. I'm not in the least annoyed with them - I totally understand the pressure midwifery depts are under, but the swinging between 'baby needs to be out' and 'it's ok to wait' is a bit confusing. OH reacted very badly and that made things feel 100X worse.

The lovely midwife today said the reason that *I* had been bumped was that my pregnancy was the least risky of those due today - have had no issues other than my weight - and that the other women all had complications. Now if only that'd mean I could use the birthing pool, haha :)

I am really, really glad you're both fine. :)

lindsey, hope everything goes well for you, good luck xx

so happy to hear baby is perfect and hopefully things progress naturally! good luck!! :)

Good luck, I hope the sweep has got things moving

Good luck Lindsey, my fingers are crossed tight for you. I'm 41 weeks today and booked in for Wednesday and hoping I don't face a similar situation which is under stable but very frustrating. So I totally understand how gutted you felt this morning.

Sorry slipping in from 2nd tri - Are you feeling crampy at all after the sweep? Hope so... really rooting for you, and that you get the birth you wanted!

Hopefully the second sweep has got things going, I can understand your disappointment after getting yourself psyched up ready. I was booked for an induction, then two days before my appointment my waters went but labour didn't start. The hospital was so busy I was told I couldn't be induced before my original appointment unless it was an emergency, I was admitted and they monitored me and lo closely though and we were both doing ok. As it turned out I wasn't actually moved to a labour suite for the induction until well after my original appointment time.

Someone else on here mentioned that due dates are not an exact science, my lo was born at exactly 42 weeks and out of curiousity I wanted to have a good look at the placenta because I'd been worrying about it degrading, but it looked completely healthy, plus I'd been expecting my lo to look 'overdue' with flaky skin etc. but she had smooth pink skin and wasn't at all wrinkly.

Good luck, I hope they find you a bed soon

Popping in from 2nd tri too, to wish you luck - I remember only too clearly how frustrating it was to be turned away from my induction (31st Dec 1999) due to understaffing over the Millenium. I eventually got induced on the 5th Jan at 18 days past my due date. The good news is that by then, baby was ready and so was I. 1 prostin pessary and 2 hours later, after a quick but easy labour, I held my gorgeous baby son .... He was worth the wait and completely healthy.
