I would say that a new mum CAN get things done, but she has to prioritise and to be honest, it always seems to be to the detriment of sleep lol.
The first couple of months I was so tired because of wakings, soreness, generally being so tired that no amount of sleep can make you feel better lol (labour was hard!!) I had my hubby to help but it was still knackering.
Earl would sleep in 2-3 hour batches in the beginning, and we could get things done, chill out and nap, have a bath etc without too much hassle - especially when there was 2 of us lol. But on days when I was on my own with him there was good days where Earl slept well and was easily entertained, where I had slept well and had plenty of energy, and there were bad days where nothing got done until he was in bed at 7pm. I would spend 6am-7pm with him, then 7pm-9pm cleaning, sorting and cooking ready for hubby to get home at 9pm, then I would eat and collapse into bed at about 10.30 after his dream feed, and be up again at 1 and 4 to feed him, before being up again at 6am. Hubby worked 5 over 7 but becuase his shifts were erratic he would sleep and I would see to Earl. (I didn't have a lie in from January until August!!!)
I think it's a long slog for the first 6 months as you're looking after a baby, trying to recover from birth, and trying to run a home at the same time. It takes some getting used to.
My advice - sleep every minute that you can! Your washing can wait! Just get what NEEDS to be done, and sod the rest! They're only newborn for such a short time and before you know it, you're into the swing.
