Hi all

I am doing ICSI in July...lets say we have some good embryos...

I have an option of putting 2 or 3 embies back for IVF.. now in Switzerland, they do not freeze embryos.. only zygotes which is sperm and egg fused but no dividing which means should you have 3 good embryos and they only use 2 then they throw the 3rd away....they wont use them for research or donation is illegal here.. even surrogacy and egg donation iseems to be illegal here.. pathetic in my opinion!

I guess they will let a few mature and select the best ones for transfer but then throw the rest away.. in switzerland they only allow 3 embryos to mature to embryo stage..

I was thinking... due to not being able to freeze the embies.. would u also put three back... we are paying for this privately as not covered here in switzerland and we want to get the best success but triplets is concerning from a health perspective.. for me and the babies..

I would welcome your thoughts.

xxxxx

my first reaction was yes, put back three, but then I thought hmmm could I cope with triplets it all worked out? and if one or more of them had health problems because of the risk of multiples? So with thought, no, I'd go for 2.

I would totally put 3 back tanya. Your odds would be increased and although there's a slightly higher chance of multiples, it wouldn't stop me. A child is a blessing and two or three would be a miracle! If multiples did happen you would adapt I'm sure. Sometimes you have to take a chance x x

MY IVF clinic only allows 1 to be transfereed. As more than that can increase all kinds of chances of complications during pregnancy. You have to take into consideration the risks involved in carrying a multiple pregnancy.

I would perhaps opt for 2. - but I think 3, especially if they all took - would be taking a big risk.

Hi Tanya,

It is such a personal decision. I transferred 3 back. At 39 years old, the statistics my clinic showed me was that there was a very small chance that all 3 would take - less than 3 percent. A higher chance of twins 25%, and a good chance for a singelton 50% (for my age group). Obviously those statistics are better the younger you are. But given my age, and my history, putting back 3 good quality embryo's was a no brainer for me. In fact, the clinic really recommended it - and my clinic likes to do single embryo transfers for women who qualify to reduce multiples.

Having said that I've already decided what I can and cannot handle, and what my choice would be if I have triplets (my scan is in a week - so I don't know how many are in there yet). So I'm ready to bear those consequences. Whatever you decide - you have to be ready to take the consequences as well.

But, I'm very, very happy I transferred 3 back. I'm pregnant - early days still. And if there is only one in there, I can't help but wonder what if I had only transferred 2 - maybe I wouldn't be pregnant right now.

You have the added complication that they don't freeze embryo's AND you are not covered by any insurance. I would completely be inclined to transfer three given those circumstances.

But whatever you decide will be right for you! I struggled with my decision too - as do most women who find themselves undergoing IVF.

Good Luck!!

My 'instant' answer to that for you hunny, would probably be that we, in those circs, would opt for two. It seems to be a number that gives better odds, but then isn't as much of a risk as 3 if all were to be successful.

However, if you did decide that 3 were right for you, I couldn't not support that decsion for you, as the final decision is something that can only ever be made taking your personal circumstances and feelings into account. And lets face it, its not about what right for us....it's about whats right for you. And if three gives the best chance, with a slight risk...then I can totally see why you need to seriously consider that!

I just hope it works for you babe...I'm just praying for a good outcome, however many that is xx

Good luck in whatever you decide. I would probably only do 2, but that's because I'd be worried about complications and expense of triplets. It's a tough call though. :hugs:

three - if you are of good weight (not overweight) and healthy otherwise. If not, then two. Pregnancy is hard on your body, and if you are not really fit and healthy beforehand, then adding a multiple pregnancy can be risky. At the end of the day, you have to do what feels right to you.

Thanks girls.. will talk to my FS about it tomorrow... I appreciate your comments and views....

xxxxx:hugs:

I would put three back as well, the chances of conceiving with even one on ICSI are not so high that you would get triplets every time. so why not take a chance? When I do IUI in the coming months I am hoping to produce 3 or 4 good healthy follicles. Maybe I am crazy though

i would go for 3. you get one shot here if you have a healthy baby then its not free and you have to pay.

my best friend has triplets and i have always been there through the highs and lows, she also had ivf, so it wouldnt be anything new to me x
