Jehovah's Witnesses

I was told as a child I will go to hell if I sin. That is the church of england and I was petrified.

JW's don't belive in hell as they don't see why a god of love would make us suffer for eternity.

As for wars and famine etc. Thats man made and JW's say god gave us free will. And we choose to do things like go to war, kill, steal etc

As for wicca etc they believe it is influnced by the devil (something I am very scared of deamons etc) It says it opens the door to let eveil spirts come in.

As for homosexuals I believe if there is a god he should love us regardless. He gave us the ability to love so why should it matter whom me love. Some parts of the bible can be very deep. And not all of it I agree with.

But others have given me comfort. And one day I really hope there will be peace on eath (it may happen who knows) I mean who doesn't.

I really don't see why people hate JW's so much. They are lovely people. There is already to much hate in this world. Why create more? Just because someone is trying to show you something ( You don't have to belive it). Just say no thanks and they will either offer you a magazine and just go or just go. Where is the harm in that?

Some of the things people say about them is truly horrible. Just because people don't beleieve what they belive doesn't give them a right to shout abuse (not directed at anyone just in general)

wow this thread kicked off again!

I would much rather form my own opinions than live my life by a book that I don't even know is true. All I'm seeing are references to the bible, not personal opinions

Just my thoughts!

One thing I have learnt is to get myself on the "do not call" list.

I am one of Jehovah's Witnesses. I can understand how having someone knock at your door can be annoying! But please believe me when I say we aren't doing it to be annoying! In any group of people there are some who don't have good people skills. So i apologise for the times any of you have met with pushy JW's. Most of us are not like that. We have training for the door to door work and it's very much based on respecting the people we call on. We understand that people have different beliefs and hearing about them and respecting them is what makes our work so interesting.

If you really don't wish for JW's to call, rather than getting angry, please just tell them you wish to be a 'do not call'. You will be put on a list and that will be respected. Or if you are just busy or don't feel like talking, please just be firm.

Most of us are normal people hehehe and we do have senses of humour....for example....that video posted about how to get rid of us is very funny!

To be fair the ones that turn up at my door see a friendly no sorry not interested as maybe next week:wacko: so now the poor people get asked if they can read as at the end of our street there is a sign that clearly states no unwanted callers and they are not wanted i am afraid , why do they need to be so pushy ? i dont push my faith onto anybody:growlmad:

That makes no sense. God is the father, Jesus is his son? Christ sits on the right hand of God etc, yes, they are two seperate beings.
Sorry, lol. I was getting ahead of myself as there are scriptures that pretty much state god/jesus are one but totally separate (and not to confuse that). Just is odd, doesn't make a lot of sense.
there were several levels so that may have been enough room or Could it be a possibility that babies were taken not full grown animals???

Do you know how big a boat would have to be to carry two of every animal? Baby or not? All baby animals aren't the size of mice.

This is what I hate about the religious debates,...I cannot physically disprove you because you cannot even tell me where your god is located so that someone can test your theory. That's why people make up religions like the flying spaghetti monster. You cannot disprove a flying spaghetti monster that is invisible, has no location, color, size, etc (like god).
How can anyone prove god exists/doesn't if nobody even knows what god is supposed to be?
Any discussion with a religious person in a debate leads to this, "God exists". Just mentioning it means he/it exists. You don't have to provide real falsifiable evidence for claims (bible isn't proof). A non-believer should never say the non-existence of god is a fact for that reason (can't physically disprove something that hasn't been defined) if they are trying to be factual though.

Any religious debate needs to be respectful of each others views

I don't know where in the bible it is. I will have to ask the lady that comes but she did say it was 6 months after his cousin was born

I mean think about it. Why would the sherpards be in the fields at winter? It's so logical when you think about it but you don't think to question it. Madness :D

xx

I'm not sure if someone answered this all ready but Jesus was born 6 months after his cousin, John the Baptist, which would put his birthday some time in around October. The Bible also states that Jesus was born during the Feast of Tabernacles which is Mary and Joseph could find no place to stay as all of the inns would have been filled with Pilgrims, this also puts his birth at some time during October. The logic for the his birth being celebrated in December isn't there, but even knowing those facts we still celebrate Christmas not as much as the birth of Christ but as a great time for family and fellowship :flower:

Wasnt being disrespectful was just pointing how the JW are around here  pushy and dont seem to take no for answer we get them at least twice a month :flower: tho i will ask about the do not call list next time

I wasn't aiming that at you hun. No one has been disresectful in thsi thread. I think it was nov1984that mention about religious debates etc

Any debate does in general. Again as it's been said a million times here - debates with pregnant women are going to be slightly hormonally charged (many times) then again anything that someone feels passionately about can get a little crazy!
Back to basics, I don't mind religion if it is separated from state and unless it's something being debated I wouldn't want someone pushing bible quotes in my face when I am out and about or at home ....just like non-believers don't generally run the streets with pamphlets (obviously a thread like this is different - I welcome bible quotes posted to be debated).

Every single JW I've known (granted that's only 4) has gone nuts when they hit drinking age because the religion is too strict.

Imo, there is no question that there is a god, it is evident in everything we see around us. The complexity and harmony of nature, our planet, the universe our bodies could not have come about by chance. It points to great wisdom and design. All the simple material things we have around us have a designer and a maker, how could we not logically conclude that the above had to be designed and created also?

Just pointing out my views and reasoning on this :flower:

Some info on the ark carrying capacity....

Ample Carrying Capacity. The passenger list of the ark was quite impressive. Besides Noah, his wife, his three sons, and their wives, living creatures “of every sort of flesh, two of each,” were to be taken aboard. “Male and female they will be. Of the flying creatures according to their kinds and of the domestic animals according to their kinds, of all moving animals of the ground according to their kinds, two of each will go in there to you to preserve them alive.” Of the clean beasts and fowls, seven of each kind were to be taken. A great quantity and variety of food for all these creatures, to last for more than a year, also had to be stowed away.—Ge 6:18-21; 7:2,*3.
The “kinds” of animals selected had reference to the clear-cut and unalterable boundaries or limits set by the Creator, within which boundaries creatures are capable of breeding “according to their kinds.” It has been estimated by some that the hundreds of thousands of species of animals today could be reduced to a comparatively few family “kinds”—the horse kind and the cow kind, to mention but two. The breeding boundaries according to “kind” established by Jehovah were not and could not be crossed. With this in mind some investigators have said that, had there been as few as 43 “kinds” of mammals, 74 “kinds” of birds, and 10 “kinds” of reptiles in the ark, they could have produced the variety of species known today. Others have been more liberal in estimating that 72 “kinds” of quadrupeds and less than 200 bird “kinds” were all that were required. That the great variety of animal life known today could have come from inbreeding within so few “kinds” following the Flood is proved by the endless variety of humankind—short, tall, fat, thin, with countless variations in the color of hair, eyes, and skin—all of whom sprang from the one family of Noah.
These estimates may seem too restrictive to some, especially since such sources as The Encyclopedia Americana indicate that there are upwards of 1,300,000 species of animals. (1977, Vol. 1, pp. 859-873) However, over 60 percent of these are insects. Breaking these figures down further, of the 24,000 amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals, 10,000 are birds, 9,000 are reptiles and amphibians, many of which could have survived outside the ark, and only 5,000 are mammals, including whales and porpoises, which would have also remained outside the ark. Other researchers estimate that there are only about 290 species of land mammals larger than sheep and about 1,360 smaller than rats. (The Deluge Story in Stone, by B.*C. Nelson, 1949, p. 156; The Flood in the Light of the Bible, Geology, and Archaeology, by A.*M. Rehwinkel, 1957, p.*69) So, even if estimates are based on these expanded figures, the ark could easily have accommodated a pair of all these animals.

Well said

As for the part about homosexuals, God does love them. The Bible tells us to love the person, hate the sin. We are ALL His children and there is nothing we can do to cause Him to stop loving us, it's an unconditional love. One of the most well known scriptures is John 3:16 "For God so loved the world..." It doesn't say only those who follow His ways or only those who are without sin.

but what I mean is the fighting over religions. Why? If you were so sure of your religion, why would it come to this. Its sad but I often associate alot of religion with violence. Its sad really. I mainly don't believe because I choose not to. I grew up with a religious family and have seen the damage it has caused within the family when people did something others did not agree with.

The one thing I can not get to terms with is Noahs ark lol. I also believe the earth was created by a big bang and lots of evidence supports this also. This is just my opinion. Alot of my family is still very religious, they know I am not. I respect them and they respect me.

Woah this thread is getting very deep now And I am only on the first chapter of " What does the bible really teach" So I shall read with intent but don't blame me if I seem a little confused etc lol

Oh goodness I hope no one is chastising you for not knowing everything! I've been a Christian my entire life and there are still things I don't know, the only one who knows everything is God lol

I'm not a JW but I believe that they do not allow blood transfusions based on the scripture verse Leviticus 17:14 which says "You may not eat the blood of any sort of flesh", it's their interpretation of what the scripture meant.
