I got offered a job yesturday, which I have accepted, am really pleased. BUT what do I do about telling them I am pregnant? I am absolutly shitting myself as I will be on 6 months probation.

I think you should give yourself a bit of time to adjust to the job and make sure you like it. How far along are you?

If you're early on, I would give it a month or so. If you aren't, I would wait a couple of weeks and show that I'm a good choice for the position. Then, I would have a private meeting with my supervisor. You will be able to make a plan for yourself. You can also contact HR to see what kind of maternity leave (if any) you get.

Good luck!

Thanks, I will be 13+3 when I start, as for maternity leave I wont qualify for SMP but will get MA, I think.

The latest you can tell an employer you aare pregnant is 15 weeks before the expected date of delivery. So if you arent showing you can affors to wait for a while and show them how good you are at the job before telling them! They are not allowed to get rid of you on probation due to being pregnant but they can find another reason not linked to pregnancy (lateness, not doing job correctly etc). Just go do the job well and dont give them any reason not to keep you :)

Thanks for the replies, I got my offer letter through this morning, which is good. But now I am worried as they are sending me a medical form to fill out (local goverment job) and I am sure that somewhere on there there will be something about being pregnant.

If they have sent you an offer and your medical is al clear apart from your pregnancy there is no way there gonna retract the offer - especially if its a government job. Employers pretty much realise now that getting rid of pregnant women is a big no no!

hi, i just got a local govt job as well, the questionaire ii filled out doesnt ask if ure preg, it just asks about your previous roles and what kinda stuff u were doing, depending on the role you may still need to undergo a crb check which may take another 4-6weeks if applicable to the role.i deally it shouldnt matter if ure preggers whilst on the job. i would advice dt u put in extra effort when u resume even if u are showing so they can see that your pregnancy doesnt deter your efficiency at work.best of luck and congrats on the new job..

Thanks for the advice, I got the medical form and there is nothing that directly says about being pregnant.

I had my bloods taken today by the midwife and shes made my next appointment whic is going to be 25th June at 9.10. This means I am going to have to tell them sooner than I wanted to as this will be the 3rd week of employment and my hours start at 8am.

I would absolutely tell them. If you'd like to go back to that job, they will appreciate the honesty up front. Something lacking in many employees these days sadly.

Just say, you're really sorry, you've just found out you're pregnant, you'd really like the job. Timing it lousy, but you were not expecting it. Something along those lines.

Don't stitch the employer up as they'll always hold it against you, could cause an unhappy work environment. Not worth it.

Be honest, be decent. Apologise and plead.

I have been thinking to call my new boss and ask to see her next week to explain to her, I am just trying to pluck up the courage.

I am planning on going on maternity leave end of November which means I will have only worked 7 weeks until the summer hols, I week in the hols and then 12 weeks until I take leave. So not very long.

I plan to go back July 2011, taking 7 months maternity leave.

I would tell your employer as soon as possible, even though you don't have to and aren't showing yet. Tell them you want the job, you hadn't planned it like this are you really really want the job and will do your best, or something along those lines. I think they will appreciate the honesty and it will give them some time to find a person to replace you while you are away.
