just found out i was weaned at 12 weeks

Reading these comments makes me wonder about my lo. I'm pretty sure if I gave him something to eat he would look at me like, "Wtf do you want me to do with this, ma?" and throw it to the ground. :haha:

That's pretty much how my daughter reacts to most food I hand her and she's 1. :p

My MIL started giving my OH rice cereal pretty much right after he was born and she kept encouraging us to do the same...

I've always wanted to say "maybe he wouldn't shit ten times a day if you didn't give it to him so early" but I always keep my mouth shut. :haha:

 Wonder if your OH and my DH are related??

My mum switched me from breast milk to formula at 6 months (I was colicky and apparently this cured me)...and then almost no solids until 12 months because I was so skinny that she wanted me to fill up on calories from formula

I can beat that, ladies. I was never given either breastmilk or formula. for reasons still unclear to me, my mum fed me cows' milk with oats and glucose from birth.

Not only that, I used to fall asleep at the bottle so she made it thicker and cut a hole in the teat.i

oats make me sleepy to this day, but she obviously never stopped to think her recipe might be to blame.

I don't rate my mum's parenting decisions, so please no one copy this. what was she THINKING?!

I also recently saw a picture of my sister as a baby in her cot OMG, SIDS risk central! deep adult pillow, soft toys everywhere, big thick duvet, a blanket. How times have changed

My brother and I were both exclusively BF until 6 months. I have LOTS of allergies and asthma and my brother has allergies and crohns disease. So weaning early or formula definitely wasnt the cause (we never had formula- my mum continued to bf til we were 1). I guess we are very unlucky lol x

My partner's grandmother was told to stop formula and give cow's milk to her son at 8 weeks to help with colic and eczema

Same as my dh, he is allergic to everything and has asthma, he didn't have solids until 5.5/6 months, I was ff from birth and weaned at around 4 months and had rice in my bottles and I'm perfectly healthy

A lot of the time i honestly think if ur gonna get allergies/illnesses etc they are gonna happen regardless of when we are weaned or how we are fed. Some people will be predisposed to medical conditions. Theres a lot of allergies, asthma and bowel problems in my dads side of the family and people seem to get them regardless of how they were fed and weaned etc. x

When my eldest sister was born it was recommended to start weaning at 6 weeks onto weetabix with cows' milk, my mum did this even though it didn't feel right to her, because the HVs were bugging her to start. My second eldest sister she started at 12 weeks and stayed away from anything wheat based until much later, she started all of us at 12 weeks as well. Although she did avoid wheat and gluten until 5-6 months despite this not becoming an official guideline until years later she did give us sugary baby cereals and chocolate puddings from about 4 months. I was cows milk protein intolerant as a baby but I have never fully outgrown it and I am now lactose intolerant to boot, whereas my boys who were weaned later have outgrown it far better. My mum was given sterilised skimmed cows milk from birth and she has had seriously high blood pressure and crumbling, rotting teeth since her teens. I also knew a guy who had what we would now recognise as reflux when he was born in the early 70s, but his mother took it as him not liking milk so she gave him mashed bananas mixed with water ONLY from 3 weeks old, poor mite has been in ill health all his life really, he has mild learning difficulties, problems with his bones, serious stomach and digestive problems and just looks terrible. :( xx

ETA: my mum said she never came across anyone putting rice or other cereal in bottles at any point when we were babies, its something she only ever heard of doing far more recently, so clearly it wasn't the done thing everywhere. Also if you look into it early weaning is not the way things were always done but only came into style in the middle of the 20th century, historically the average age of weaning onto solids was around 9 months.

I wondered about the BF'ing = healthier babies bit as well, but I have other reasons that possibly contributed to my health issues. Growing up I had severe asthma/breathing troubles and chronic sinus issues, but was BF till 6 months. My parents both smoked around me from the time I was born, and they were chain smokers, so I really think that's what caused all of my issues.

I messed up the quote, I can't get my cursor to get between the word months and the fullstop argh!

Everything you said was terrible, but this stands out for me. Your mum was pressured to do this?! Horrible! I wouldn't even give such a high fibre food to a 1 year old now, after reading how how fibre is so harsh on little ones tummies and stops them absorbing essential nutrients. They aren't mean to to be fed until 1 here anyway in NZ but I noticed UK people start at 6 months.

Just found out I was also weaned at 12 weeks! My LO is 12.5 weeks & I can't even imagine trying to put cereal in her bottle, yet! My mom's excuse? "Well you were a hungry baby!" Also found out apparently I was fully potty trained at 12 months??? I'm shocked! lol

I know, it's just astounding :(. This was in 1971. After my eldest two I haven't given weetabix to my kids even when they were older because it is harsh on their digestive system. My mum said before this people were giving meat stews to their babies so the weetabix was seen as a healthy alternative! :dohh: xx

Just found this article (with references) and the first part of it is all about the history of early weaning (mainly in the UK but the US also) it's mind-blowing stuff!

My gran actually told me that her cousin had a large family (about 9 children) around the same time as my gran had my aunt (her eldest). Her cousin was very poor but refused to bf. When she got out of hospital they had no milk in the house (& I mean cows milk here, not even formula). So the first thing she fed her newborn was a tin of meat stew!! And water (not boiled). The baby died by the time it was 5 days old. Dunno if it was related but its so upsetting x

When my mum was young it was the norm to wean at 8 weeks. That was the advice.

minties did I get this right that in NZ you are not supposed to introduce solids until the baby is a year old? If so, I didn't know that. Here 6 month seems to be normal.

I wasn't 'weaned' as such but I was having two or three meals a day (with milk) at two months old as I was a very hungry baby... I started Emily on rusks at 4 weeks old and she too was having two or three meals a day by two months x
