Kidney infection, obstruction, antibiotics not working - Update: worse on new AB

I'm no help, but I have had something sort of similar and I can't figure out what it is. I don't have burning when I pee like a UTI at all, but higher up is the weirdest sensation and it goes across from an ovary-to-ovary sort of distance. Almost a painful sensation of pressure/need to release pressure and it does have a burning feeling to it. Not a UTI burning/stinging, but a feeling I can't put into words. It only happens when I pee and the feeling lingers for a good long while afterwards.

I went to the walk in section of my doctors clinic when I was 7 weeks along for not coping with morning sickness, they took a urine same and said it was positive for an infection, it wasn't sent off anywhere so I am unsure how they came to the conclusion (I've always had urine sent off to a lab to get told that in the past). It wasn't a mid-stream sample though, I just squeezed some drops out into a tube as I was dehydrated.

Your post is the first time I've found someone else describe the sensation, though I don't think I feel it as badly as you. My pee does come out a lot slower than normal, but not takes-15-minutes-slow like you.

I just pee'd at 2:44am and now it's 3:22am and my bladder is still feeling strange/sore/pressure/burny-crampy.

I don't know whether to wait until I see my midwife again on Jan 4th or just go to the doctor.

I don't have much time to update right now but I was given another antibiotic and it is getting worse on it. It started by me suddenly only peeing tiny amounts when with the penicillin I peed larger amounts and now my bladder feels full, I drank lots, yet I haven't been able to go. I feel extreme pressure and my legs have like a sore cold sensation...idk what to do. Everyone says let the antibiotic work but this feels so wrong.

I would keep going with the new antibiotic. Antibiotics take time to work and they work by continuously fighting infection, not like a painkiller where the pain would return when the painkiller wears off, that doesn't make any sense

I agree with what someone else said. See a different dr and never keep antibiotics from a different course of treatment

So sorry to hear that you're not diagnosed & have to doctor shop. I would urge fr urgent referal to urogynaecologist or someone with more than basic knowledge of UTI, kidney infections, GBS. All those can be tricky to diagnose & treat, especially in pregnancy. And all those conditions can cause serious complications fr you and baby, so they need to be ruled out.

In Canada, if I go into ER on a weekday & in the morning with a specific complaint like that, the resident 'expert' doctor in that branch needs to sign of on release. If I were to go in now, more than likely an obstetrician will sign of on release from ER, not the ER doctor on duty. They have the obligation to see me.
Problem is that if you're not in extreme pain or have a fever, they might consider you as not-urgent & apply the 'let's wait & see' approach. I truly hope you don't have anything serious going on. If you're a good player, you can exaggerate the pain level. Good Luck!!

Most infections will be treated with antibiotics, so I would think it's wise to continue taking them.

I know it doesn't make sense and I have never seen this either. Usually it gradually got better with antibiotics. The doctor says my body developed a partial resistance to it so it does not cure the infection and it comes back. I have researched this and many seem to be dealing with similar.

I think that's why it's so important that they send the sample of to labs. They can see what kind of infection it is and use the right antibiotic accordingly :hugs:

That's insane! I don't get why they won't culture the urine. Often it comes up negative in a rapid test u need to let it grow then see which strain it is in order to treat the bacteria properly. Most uti's are resistant as it is. If this is the case, u risk it travelling to your kidneys as it did for me years ago and I was hospitalized very ill with fever. All u need to do is see an OB. Who is following u this pregnancy?

My OB said a culture is useless since I've been on antibiotics for so long. Idk if that is right though. I am on the new antibiotics and feel alright, but not great. Still some pain and pee problems but my lower back ache reduced and so far the symptoms haven't worsened after 6 hrs. My OB did actually say the symptoms rather fit an upper urinary tract, pelvic and kidney infection than a UTI and urged me to see a urologist. But due to the holidays the earliest urology appointment would be on the 6th of January. So if I don't feel perfect in the morning, I may go to the ER to see a urologist :/ Different hospital, I hope they will be more helpful.

Good Luck Marumi! I hope they'll figure it out. A bit unlucky you are not being helped fast because of the festive season. X

Thank you! I always seem to have this sort of luck..all pregnancy related ER visits were during weekends or holidays :(

After 4 antibiotic tablets, day 2 of taking them I don't feel normal, but not horrible either. Idk if this is good enough...every UTI I had cleared up within a day symptom wise. I even had one that affected the kidneys in 2002 and it cleared up just as quickly. I don't pee normal yet either. Not sure I am dealing with a resistent strain.
Since I can't find a urologist that will see me anytime soon I will check into the ER of a different hospital in the morning and demand testing. I am ready to cause drama if they won't check me up and down this time around. It is getting ridiculous...I really wonder what is behind this unwillingness to test. A friend of mine who is a medical student said high risk patients such as pregnant women take priority and need to be tested thoroughly.

I noticed I pee better when I lay down after drinking fluids. Seems like that helps my bladder fill up. It is pretty odd but maybe the weight from the baby keeps the problem there...not saying it is a cause bc I had no problems urinating at all before, but maybe once infected it makes things worse.

@Minties
Sorry I didn't reply earlier. I was feeling crappy and keeping it short. I'd definitely get checked out. It seems these things are harder to treat once they get really bad. My first infection was milder and the penicillin took care of it. The second time it worsened faster and got more intense. And it seems like nothing is really taking care of it now. If they do a culture let me know what you have please. Maybe we have the same problem. My burning also felt as if it went from ovary to ovary, the right side still hurts at times when I pee.

I woke up shaking and shivering, called an ambulance.
I now sort of know what it is. My kidneys are obstructed and it hinders urine flow, causing a kidney, bladder and pelvic infection and the general malaise is due to the slow poisoning of the body. So upset someone did not find this sooner. I am being kept and treated here now at the newborn station.

Glad you're admitted & bloody irresponsible they didn't test thoroughly in the first place!! I hope you'll recover well & fast before the third trimester is here. Take care!

Oh goodness, bless ya. I'm sorry you're so poorly but so glad you've been diagnosed and they can now help you get better. Hope you make a speedy recovery x

I was going to say to you it sounds like a uti/kidney infection (.i had a similar situation last pregnancy )
I hope you are sorted out really quick. When i was in hospital with my last pregnancy another lady had a very bad kidney infection and IV antibiotics for a week.

So now they say the reason antibiotics aren't working is because the flow between kidneys and bladder is obstructed by the baby. Tonight I am feeling worse even on the new antibiotics. Unable to really pee again and my kidneys and pelvis hurt.
They want me to try and go as long as I can but if the kidney congestion and infection gets very bad or the flow is further obstructed they will have to do a C-Section to avoid kidney failure. I still can't wrap my mind around it how I am suddenly supposedly so sick when all was well until the 23rd.
Despite all of it they are sending me home with more antibiotics.

Oh no :( I'm so sorry Hun! Although I've heard of that before it's not super uncommon. Glad they found the problem and that now u are being treated properly! I hope it resolves asap and that you won't need anymore intervention. Just please insist on not leaving the hospital until you feel better xx

I'm so sorry. I hope everything gets better quickly. I also hope they will keep you in until it's resolved.

Did they drain yr bladder via catherization? Did they do ultrasound to see if something else than pregnancy is causing blockage or to confirm that statement? You've had kidney infection before, right, what caused it then? Did they provide IV antibiotics as that is sure to reach kidney?

I'm sure pregnancy doesn't help. I was just thinking how you could position yourself so the internal pressure isn't all on the intestines. I sleep on my side & feel the whole bump sink into the mattress. I know that belly sleeping & back sleeping are not recommended, but impossible fr me anyway. Maybe you can rest lying down on your side as much as possible. Make sure your belly is hanging out. I hope you get through this without more complications! GL! Take care!

They can also put in a stent to drain kidneys directly.
