Lemsip....safe? - Update - I've had a few already!!! How much damage have I done?

my doc told me they were fine when i was havin my first little girl - beginning of this year. They contain paracetemol so you have to be careful how often u drink em but they should be fine!

I had tonsillitis when I didn't know I was pregnant I took two lots of antibiotics
Loads of lemsip, co dydramol, menofamic acid ( as I thought I was getting period pain)
And over 5 bottles of wine over theat time period. as you can Imogen I was devastated and worried sick when I found out I was pregnant. Guess what, my healthy 10 month old I'd fine . She's perfect!

I know of cases where midwives and doctors have advised lemsip to pregnant mums as it has been the lesser of two evils in that case. I had to take it in my last pregnancy, I only took one or two as I had a persistent cough and cold for three weeks and was coughing so badly that I couldn't keep anything down, it was towards the end of my pregnancy and I wasn't getting any sleep either. I've always suffered from low blood pressure so the risk of high blood pressure happening to me wasn't very likely xx

The title pretty much says it all...I've got a bad cold - I'm stuffy and my nose has turned into a running tap. Is it safe?

I've already had a few...I would say about 4 over a few days or so....:dohh:

im a mama of four..
if you dont have high blood pressure problems a day or two on decongestant and antihistamine wont do harm....i have had to do it...also vicks vapo rub helps loads feel better...
some docs say no but they ha ve to say no as to not get sued for anything they cover there tush for everything that may happen....even if its bazillion to one

Lemsip is a brand and there are different "versions" of the lemsip available.

Check your labels!!
Some of them only contain only 500 mg others up to 1000mg of Paracetamol and various levels of Vit C and they have different levels of decongestants, phenyleffedrine, cough blockers, caffeine, menthol or other aromatherapy oils in it.
So if you can, stay away from them and check with your doctor or midwife what you can take.

Lovely drink for cold and flu:

Sliced ginger, lemonjuice, honey and hot decaf tea (or red tea) mixed. Mmmmmhh...

Wishing everyone a happy and healthy pregnancy

1000mg of paracetamol isn't an issue at all because that is the normal recommended maximum adult dose (with tablets it would be 2x 500mg) and this includes for pregnancy. Caffeine is also fine up to 200mg a day so not a problem either. As for making a tea out of honey and lemon etc this is all fine and dandy normally but sometimes it isn't enough. Xx

Hi all,

I just wanted to make sure people read the labels as 1000mg paracetamol is fine but only up to max of 4x/day while you can take the "regular" 500mg containing lemsips up to 8x/day. (alias 4000mg max dose in 24 hours)

I also didn't mean to replace the lemsip by the honey/lemon/ginger/tea but 2 regular paracetamol and the hot drink are safe and yummy...

Wishing everyone a happy and healthy pregnancy

Hi guys. I know this post is old. But has anyone actually had a bavy after taking lemsip. I took some by mistake, being my first pregnancy I didn't think twice about taking a cold medicine. Realising I stopped and now im really worried.

Hi very old thread. You'll be fine they are basically paracetamol which is allowed and lemon flavour. The only reason they say not suitable is because they can't test them to prove it.
Can't remember if I actually took it but I can tell you that I ended up taking a bundle of paracetamol, antibiotics, tamiflu, and who knows what else was fired into me fighting swine flu. I doubt many of them were regarded as safe in pregnancy but DS arrived safe and sound he is a very bright, bundle of energy almost four year old. I have no idea where the time has gone.

Hi Tommy

Thanks for your reply! Didn't think I would get one. I am super cautious. I just wanna be happy I'm pregnant rather than paranoid. I hope I'm more calm after my first scan. Thank u for sharing ur story. I'm so glad to hear u 4 year old is doing great. Hope I'm blessed with the same x
