Living room advice - Carpet, Laminate or Vinyl/Lino??

Real wood, it's much warmer.

I hate Capet, I clean my floors a lot and is thinking about what comes off that, makes me feel sick thinking of carpet. But I just feel its the most u hygienic thing ever, I love the ability to clean and wipe my floor.

We had to get laminate for one of the downstairs rooms as its 30 ft long and couldn't afford real wood, it is much colder than our real wood, and you tend to see every bit of dust on it, which for me is fine and I Hoover a few times a day anyway.

So it depends what's your priority, a dark Capet will be warm, and hide a lot of dust, mess etc.

Laminate will be colder, but it will be clean.

Personally I hate the look for Lino type stuff,

My lounge is like a sauna :S the only place we have carpet is the stairs and even they pee me off! x

We have laminate and a large wool rug in the living room and vinal in the kitchen......its a must with 3 kids I recon lol......so much cleaner and hygenic :D

We have laminate in our living room and find it so cold. We'd love to change it to carpet but laminate is so easy to clean up if LO's split something on it whereas carpets could end up stained... Few months later and we're still debating it

We had laminate in our living room. The cold wasn't too bad but the dust was terrible. As for having laminate with a rug, we have this in our lounge and its a pain to clean and the edges are difficult to keep clean, especially when mopping. All the dust/ dirt gets swept onto the edges and they then get wet.

I always hoover my rug 1st then roll it up and put it in the kitchen whilst I clean my lamitane

We have laminate in our lounge and dining room- we had it ripped up last year and underfloor heating put in as it was FREEZING in the winter. Scratches on it can look ugly and if it gets dusty (which it seems to 100000x a day here) then that sticks out like a sore thumb.

I would go for carpet personally.

I've got carpet and it's driving me crackers! I want vinyl putting down, but not sure I can convince my LL! We've got vinyl tiles in the kitchen which are the sort of thing they put in waiting rooms etc and I love them! They're wood effect and IMO so much better than laminate as you don't get any grooves and can seal the edges so you don't get stuff under the units!

I agree with PP about underlay, when you go to one of those places that says free fitting when you buy underlay etc, it's usually shit underlay and they bump up the price! My OHs a floorlayer and from what he's said he prefers vinyls/hardwood, he won't touch laminate with a bargepole!

^ its only the cheap laminate that peels and scratches, the real wood ones that clip together do not peel. x

Well I do manage to keep on top of our carpet we have one of those Hoover sweepers and its amazing!

Its only really stained as we haven't got a dining table so us and the kids have to eat in the living room :( We are moving in about 2 weeks so will have a table so would like nice flooring for the lounge.

Will your new house have a dining table in the living room? If you and the kids still eat in the living room then i'd go for laminate as you can easily clean up the food and spills from the kids. Although the constant cleaning will drive you crazy :winkwink: We have a light brown carpet in our living room to hide all the stains from the kids, lol. Although the dust on the laminate drives me mad, we have laminate in our hallway and it's far easier just to hoover up the dust instead of sweeping it up.

We have laminate in our living and dining room. It's good quality. The wood has some kind of insulation material on it and we have a good underlay underneath so its warm. It cost us around £80 for both rooms and we fitted it ourselves and put a big rug on it.

I like carpet but i only have it on my stairs and bedrooms. I don't think carpets go very well with kids and pets.

Unfortunately i don't think any flooring goes well with kids and pets!

We have laminate, with a rug...and both irritate the hell out of me - but id also hate carpet because i think it would just look the same, dirty/stained etc.

Not conventional at all, but were thinking of going for carpet tiles (like those in offices, schools) because then when a couple get stained they can be picked up and binned, also id sweep/hoover only the same as i currently do - but get rid of the need to mop :D

After having BLACK carpets in my old flat (hoovering 500 times a day after I had Charlie :dohh:) I decided to get vinyl flooring throughout my new place - I love it! It's really easy to keep clean and imo just looks as good as laminate/wood! It's about the same price as laminate but a lot easier/cheaper to fit, my flat is quite big and I got the whole place supplied and fitted for around £1200 :) I was trying to find a pic without Charlie in it but can't so if you look beyond this tomato soup stained face, this is how the vinyl looks in the living room and the other is Charlie's bedroom. I'm really happy with it :flow:

i completely agree, lino gets a bad name IMO, yours looks lovely! We have a shaggy rug and i shake it once a week, has anyone done the same and saw what comes out of it??? all i can say is yuck.

I had a really expensive red shaggy rug and it was a nightmare to clean! Ended up giving it away on Gumtree

We have laminate, and I just found a big beautiful persian style rug on gumtree for £30 to give the room more warmth and colour :) I prefer it to carpet tbh.
