March Mamas 2012 Baby Group (Closed Group)

Laura boots etc have olive oil for skin use. Don't be using your extra virgin! :haha: if you have basic olive oil for frying etc then you can use that. Yellow stuff rather than green. Unless you want an expensively oiled baby that smells like a salad that is! :haha:

Thanks emera..... And i agree with crowned i am quite loving this motherhood malarchy....for now :winkwink:...ask me again after a bad night.

Just having skin to skin with Mia....changed her, olive oiled her up, fed nake on me (nappy obviously...not risking that!!!)....now she is sleeping which i should be. Too frightened with her on me in case i squish her :-(. Going to.pop a vest on her and put in moses basket...quite warm.in bedroom...should be enough with thin blanket
Trying to.get the hang of this 'how many layers/clothes neede'

You get used to how many layers they need quite fast eh?
Just had to go through all the baby clothes and get out all the 0-3 stuff!! its so weird realising it fits her now when I see the stuff Roh was wearing at 4 months old! I think Roh weighed a lb less than Mia at birth, so you can imagine how little he was! Obviously Freyja seems small, she's 2 weeks old, but she's massive in comparison!

Emera, length has a lot to do with it too. My Amy was 8lb 7 1/2 oz but at 57.5 cm she was bursting out of 0-3. Jessica was 6lb 15, but only 50 cm. Even newborn swamped her.

Crowned, Jessica was a little bit jaundiced and the midwife wanted me to get her to eat more as at the time she was only taking an oz and a half. How excatly do you get a baby to eat more? Anyway, since the weather was and still is so lovely, I made sure she was warm and popped her outside (in the shade in her bouncy chair and sat out with her) for a few minutes each day. Her jaundice has now completely gone

ETA: City - I've only ever used baby oil, but it did the trick.

Ft had her baby!!!!!!! Baby George arrived at 3:30pm....7lb 15oz. She said wait til we hear birth story..ended in a dangerous c section but seems all is good x x

Wow! Congratulations FT! I hope all is well and can't wait to hear what happened.
xxx

wowzers...Ft!!! Yay  so pleased for you and sorry to hear it was c-sec but glad he's here now!! x

Yay FT! Sounds like it got a bit hairy, but yay!

I feel like a milking machine this afternoon ..is that normal????!!!!

I am worried that skin to skin feed in warm bedroom has spoilt the moses basket/carrycot for her...doesnt want to settle:nope:

Oh Mitch - :hugs: hun... you haven't spoilt anything with skin to skin...sadly i think its fairly normal to have these cluster feeding sessions...i've had a lot of them and been at the end of my tether and then woken up with a lot more milk the next day - think they are very important at getting the milk volume regulated...but they are tough...

Anyone got a vomiting baby?!

A had slept and fed well today (plenty of dirty and wet nappies) but she's also had three incidents to big (as in lots of) vom. My mum reckons she's guzzling and that's making her sick but I'm concerned it's caused by wind and I just can't seem to get the wind up. :( I don't know what to do to help her.

Does anyone have any advice? Is it normal?!

Mitch :hugs: its totally normal! :hugs: I handed Freyja to my OH yesterday at one point and said "you take her for a minute I'm so sick of feeding her!!" I just went out in the garden for 5-10 minutes, had a cup of tea and some deep breaths of fresh air then got a glass of water and went back to it. You can expect Mia to have a growth spurt some time between 1 and 3 weeks old, and that will be pretty intensive feeding and she won't settle so well in between. Possibly its starting for you now? Anyway growth spurts aside, some days they settle well, and some they don't, at this point it won't be anything you are doing that will "spoil" them, they are too little and don't remember things for long at all. Just hold in your mind that although when you are in it it seems eternal, in the grand scheme of things, this phase of Mia's and your life is incredibly short, and you will start to miss it when things change!! :hugs:

Edit: - Well you probably won't miss the sore nips and sleepless nights much! :haha:

Thanks waula.....it just seems continuous ....i just dont know which boob to give next!!!! Each feed is only 15-20 mins so i am alternating...right thing to do??

Best it happens afternoon and evening.....does this mean more chance of not needing so much in night? Cluster feeding cant go on indefinately????

Edit.....thanks emera x x

Laura...mia chuckedup quite a bit of milk in feeding frenzy today

Hi Laura - I had this with Noah last night - got vom'd on 3 times in bed and was absolutely covered in the stuff - out of mouth and both nostrils...hideous. Think he was just over guzzling to be honest - we've been feeding every 90mins (!) and I think he was just using me as a milky dummy so today I've decided to bite the bullet and use a real dummy/soother and so far its going really well... i'm really happy with bf'ing and milk supply is defo in so use it just to sooth him if needed - just hoping it can extend the intervals a bit and get him to feed when hungry rather than when he's grumpy... not sure if thats much help...blind leading the blind somewhat...xxx

Mitch re: which boob to use. My rule of thumb is, if she wants more within an hour of the last feed its back onto the same boob again to get the rich hind milk out. She stays there until she fusses/starts bobbing on and off and then I switch boobs so she can get a faster flow. Then the next feed I'd put her on the boob she finished on if she had both, if that makes sense? That way they get the maximum hind milk, which is more nourishing and satisfying :)

Laura - I'd say you and your mum are both right A is likely guzzling her milk which is causing wind. That gets trapped behin the milk and so is really hard to get it up through winding. You have to wait till it works its way up. Only trouble is it likes to push all the milk on top of it ou, hence big vom sessions! If you find it happens a lot, its an idea to take them off the boob/bottle as soon as they start to have those longer pauses between sucking sessions, wind them then, even if they complain about it, and then put them back on for the rest of the feed. Its what I always did wit Roh, especially if he had a bottle of expressed milk as the flow is even faster.

Question... At what age will it spoil a baby to let them sleep in your arms? I feel like the boys will not settle in for sleep without being held, and they're generally not happy when not held (or at least touched) while awake either. Sleep is so valuable that I've been indulging them, but I don't want it to get out of hand. I try to console myself with reality that they're only hitting "full term" tomorrow.

While I'm asking questions... what are your opinions about crying? The boys both cry a lot and it gets to the point they are bright red with veins popping out of their foreheads as if they're being tortured. In reality, nothing is wrong with them. It's really stressful trying to calm them down when they're both going at it. The mommy in me cant help but to try and soothe them. DH on the other hand is okay with leting them cry and he can totally tue it out. I've read that getting so distressed can be bad for development because they release stress chemicals that kill off neurons. (I have no idea how scientists could know this). Thoughts?
