March Mamas 2012 Baby Group (Closed Group)

Puts a new perspective on the term 'babysitting' doesn't it? :D

Hi lads. We are having an ok day so far. Dharma slept well again and only fed at 10pm, 3.30 and then woke at 6.30 but we didn't feed her until an hour later as she was pretty content.

I still feel guilty, but the occasional use of the dummy seems to work. We only put it in if we know she isn't hungry (ie just finished a feed) and she usually spits it out after a minute or two, but it's just enough to soothe her and stop the crying.

Midwife 10 day check today and we haven't been signed off yet  if you remember she had dropped nearly 10% (11 ounces) at day five, and has only put 4oz back on. She didn't make a big deal about it, just said keep doing what I'm doing and she'll come back on Monday. She was also completely fine about the dummy :)

We've been for a walk round the park and I'm feeling good. If a little tired.

Today is a good day!

FT awesome to have u back....huge congrats on baby George!!!! :baby: :cloud9: xxx

Loo - :hugs: hun - don't feel bad about the dummy...it sounds like its exactly what you both need....and don't worry about the weight loss - its hard when you're BFing to get the early weight loss back on...as long as Dharma's gaining thats the main thing  keep going lady!!! xxx

Had our first weigh in today, he's gone down to 8lb 10oz which is roughly 5% and his cord fell off today which should make nappy changes less fiddly! She reckons at 10 days he'll probably be back past his birth weight as he's now feeding really well, just a bit too often for my liking! We might try a bath tonight!

She's also cut one ofmy stitches as it looked really tight and was pullin the skin so think that's partly why it hurt so much!! Plus grazes apparently sting a bit more than tears and she can see a couple of those. I'm slowly healing up!
Can see FT is online... Hello! Hope you're doing ok x

Hey ladies...sorryl first time on here today...been out and abiut round at nct girls house. Regards bf in public...havent done it yet....but today Mia needed a little top up and as all the other ladies were bf at different stages of the afternoon i thought well best go for it. Obviously that competely different to out with general.public but every little helps...its a gentle introduction. We are out next week at wisley gardens so perhaps having the moral support around me and other at it might help alot. I am sure i will get used to it.

That being said i just called the sure start centre and they have had a delivery of new electric breast pumps so.i am off to.collect one tomorrow. I feel like i am producing enough milk for Mia and all the babies in the bleedy neighbourhood so thought its worth a try. Seriously though...my boobs are like rocks alot of the time i need to release some...be nice for hubby to feed too. Plus i am off out with nct ladies for dinner without babies in a couple of weeks so need to leave Mia something to eat :haha:. I am a little worried about how to collect, into what, still full sterilisation needed, where i get bags/containers fom, how i transfer milk etc etc....any advice ladies????

Oh Mias 10 day appt was great...we are all signed of...HV will be in touch soon apparently. She was 6lb 3oz at birth....dropped to 6lb 1oz at day 5 and now she is ............6lb 10.5oz.....safe to say mw very very happy. Shes says i am a baby machine:haha:...hubby laughed.....very nervously:happydance:

Lozza...were you asking about Mias 'routine' for feeding....we dont really have one...just whe she wants really. Last night was a good night again....bed at 11pm...up at 3am...then 6:30am...then slept til 9:30am. ...good thing is she can be fed, changed, fed and back down to sleep in 20 minutes. She gets milk volune really quick....she has obviously mastered the latch on. Then during day she seems to want milk every 1.5-2hours ish and sleeps i between....

Just tryi gher onher winnie the pooh playgym.....soooooo cute

Hey waula...love your pic of noah on fb marked poser.....lovely snap x

Hey Mitch
Just a note of caution on the breast pump. I'd say if your breasts are still hard/engorged then your milk needs a while more to regulate. You'll know they're getting there as they'll go soft - almost like normal and only getting fuller of its been a while since a feed. Pumping now could mean over supply - I'd personally wait a couple of weeks.

mitch - incredible growth hun!!!! you get the official :mamafy: :holly: badge!!!! well done!!! not expressed so no advice sorry xxx

Waula....that looks incredibly like me at the moment...the big boobies NOT the cow:haha:

Mscrow...thanks for the advice....hmmmm they do go hard when she hasnt fed off one for a while and bigger in fact....they are not hard the majority of the time only when not used. Certainly dont want to encourage oversupply:wacko:

I will speak to lady at sure start and see what they say. I remember Emera mentioned about expressing this week for Freyja whilst she went out with Roh for the day...but Freyja is a little older than Mia i guess...hmm

Mitch MsC is right re. Possible oversupply at this point but I'd sa if you are just pumping on the odd occasion for now it shouldn't affect you too badly. I'd give another week or so for your supply to settle (like MsC says you won't feel engorged anymore except when Mia has her longer sleeps) before you start pumping regularly. As for collection and storage. Most pumps will come with a collection bottle. You can then decant the milk into any suitably sterilized bpa free airtight container (if you have baby bottles they will be fine). Or you can buy milk storage bags in boots, they are pre-sterilized. Personally I never liked to keep my milk for much more than 24 hours in the fridge. Most guides say it will keep for 3 days though. And tou can keep it for about a month in the freezer. Make sure to defrost in the fridge for 24 hours before you use it. It does tend to separate in the fridge as its quite fatty, don't let that freak you out, just swirl it round for while to mix. It all up again.

Loo - she HAS gained weight so that's the main thing  and DON'T feel guilty about the Dummy...if it gives you a little bit of peace and settles her in between feeds I seriously don't see any problem with that :flower:

Mitch - That's a fab weight gain.....from the lady who wasn't keen on BF your turning into a pro :winkwink:

Think I might be losing tiny bits of my plug

Thanks emera....i was just going to give it a go first off...i dont plan in expressing off loads and storing it in freezer yet....i think just every so often initially to have the odd bottle ready to go. I think it can keep for up to 4 days in fridge which is plenty enough. Just going to try once or twice to see if i can then see how i feel about it longer term. Just want to have options rather than just my boob:haha:

Is there a best time to express? Maybe morning as both boobs seem pretty full

Oh and Mitch yes I plan to pump tonight so I can take Roh to toddler group in the morning but I probably won't pump regularly for another week or so. Saying that my boobs are feeling pretty back to normal unless F has a small feed so think I'm pretty much there on the supply front.
Its totally your call on the pumping though and if you pump at the same time every day, then your supply will regulate around that, so you won't get engorged unless you stop pumping ;)

Morning is a good time Mitch. I used to pump in the evening just because it was practical, Roh was asleep and I could do it whilst watching tv etc. Up to you though, go with what's practical really ;)

I sort of thought that cos she doesnt feed that much overnight and for a long time then there is 'more' milk supply available in morning:wacko:...she feeds more frequently during the day so thought that would drain my supply....i probably dont understand the mechanics of bf at all:haha:.....obviously cos i.wasnt listening too intently in the session and never did any research as i wasnt planning to.attempt it so much:blush:

Mitch - I'm the same as you with the hard boobies feeling. I bought a breast pump but have only used it once when my breasts were sooo painful and I needed some relief. That said, it feels much better after a feed, so I'm trying not to pump just yet so that my body will know how much to make and not too much. I've also heard that pumping in the morning is the best time.

Baby's weight gain - sorry some of you are experiencing your baby loosing some weight, I hope they gain it back fast. We had Kieran weighed on monday (1 week after birth) and he went from 6lbs 6oz up to 7lbs! I guess that means that I'm feeding enough lol.

Anyone else finding it hard to adjust to night feeding? Last night Kieran had us up for 2 hour periods, we just couldn't get him back down to sleep. I'm usually a patient person but last night I was in tears because I felt guilty for being angry with the baby for crying for so long. Good thing DH is willing to hold, burp and change him so that I can rest in between feeding.

Joanna :hugs: is so normal to get frustrated at nght we all do it xx

Thanks Emera, glad to know I'm not a mean mommy. Got to go, baby is starting to fidget and he'll want some lunch in a minute.

so...early evening cluster feeding...scared i may run out of milk!!!!!! he's got his mummy's appetite. :dohh: xxx

Joanna - I think it's totally normal to feel like that. Even I can remember (and it's been a loooong time!) the frustration and tiredness and emotions all rolled into one. :hugs::hugs:
