March Mamas 2012 Baby Group (Closed Group)

loo - love the story about the poonami. i have just added extra sleepsuits and nappies to my change bag. i had to send my mum out to buy extra nappies yesterday when i was at her house because i only packed 4 for a whole day (i thought that would be enough!)

i could share a story my incompetence to make you all feel loads better....

i dropped my baby this morning.

luckily it was only about 6 inches and was into the bath so he was fine but i still cried because i felt so awful. i was just leaning over to test the temperature and had him in my arms. i don't know what happened but he was naked and just slipped out of my arm straight into the bath. scared me.

anyone else want to share 'bad mummy' stories?

thank you cupcake! we dont have tons of money either. we trust in God that if He makes life in our home, He will provide eveything that life needs. we decided to give our bodies and our family completely for His glory to do with what He wants. so we feel if He chooses to be glorified by creating life from us, so be it. and if He chooses to not, so be it too. :flower:

we are trying to find a "dummy" also, but we call them binky's. i dont mind the comfort sucking on me, until its 3am and its been an hour lol. we have tried several binkys and havent found one that he will keep in. it usually wakes him up and he throws a fit and i have to start over. no bottle has worked out yet either. by the time my shower is done he is starving again, even if i feed him up til i get in.

Cupcake I could share a ton of incompetent mum stories with you!! I dropped Roh several times when he was tiny! it just happens sometimes even if you are really careful you can have an accident! :hugs: always made me cry too! I think the worst thing I did was after a bath, when he was only a couple of weeks old, he'd enjoyed his bath for the first time I think and we'd done a nice massage and he was all relaxed and sleepy and I was feeling smug, then carrying him out of the bathroom the door swung shut and I smacked his head really hard into the doorhandle!! we both cried for soo long and he had a huge lump and bruise! I ran up to my neighbour, who's a paramedic in floods of tears saying I'd broken my baby!! Needless to say he was fine, and has had plenty of bonks on the head since then! :haha:

Cupcake in my change bag I have a change of clothes for F at least 1 nappy for each hour I'm going to be out for, breast pads and a spare top for me and then one nappy for Roh. Oh, plus some juice and a snack for him too. Obviously I have wipes and a wet bag etc. And some anti-bac gel. Usually there is random toys, books dummys and other toddler stuff knocking about too. I have a giant bag these days!! :haha:

Ok...so unsure if M has colic as such.....had a couple of screaming episodes this morning but she is now in swing with dummy...first time she has properly taken it and seems happy enough though not sleeping. Have instigated a better routine with doing thw colic massage (cant hurt) and more regular infacol but jot every feed. To be honest.... I have a feeling she is going through a growth spurt...have read on internet that the first ones around 3 weeks so expect more fussy baby and more regular feeding schedule from her to increase my supply.

It is difficult to know what causes her to be unsettled....growth spurt, wind, constipated (poop frequency is less but still runny and right consistency which indicates she is just taking more from feed and expelling less).....all we can do is try to pacify her as much as possible. Have bought a loads of comfort food in as i read on internet that if it is a growth spurt she will feed alot alot and i need to just be there for her AND ignore all housework :happydance:.

Hubby worried about leaving me alone with her when back to work.....it is nice to have him here when she is grizzly to hand off...and cupcake same here hubby can get wind up hetter than me....maybe its the bigger hands :haha:

Sorry post is all about me....i am just soooo confused about what she needs and thought if she is windy the last thing i need to do is feed her again but then if its growth spurt that is exactly what i need to do:shrug:

Anyone with slightly older LOs go through this growth spurt around 3 weeks ish....do they become more fussy, unsettled etc etc......

Glow:hugs: to you...sounds like a mixture of hormones and definately insensitvity from your OH....he probably just doesnt realise what you need from him right now. Difficult to ask without nagging and you feel like they should already know...but hey they are men after all and need things spelling out.

Timings for feed....yep M can take everything she needs in 10-15 minutes (excl my new lengthy burping regime).....but i have a feeling my letdown is pretty powerful :haha:..she regularly pulls off through excess force...at which point i spray her in the face (not quick enough with muslin:haha: oopps). Another reason why she may be getting gas :dohh:

Sorry for long post....any advice fron you experienced mamas...am i doing anything wrong? Can i try something different? Even questioned my curry dinner and single glass of wine last night thinking that was a cause.... saying that she slept great 10:30-3 and then through til 6:45

mam binky's are what worked with all my others, but he wont keep them in

skadi im not looking forward at all to first AF. hopefully its a long ways away lol!

cupcake LO is ok, you're not a bad mommy! i was bathing my first in a seat sitting on the toilet when she was a newborn. we were living with my parents til she was 4 mos old cuz i was put on bedrest for preterm labor and had lost my job. anywho, my mom was very over controlling and came in to 'help' bathe her. i bumped her seat and she almost fell out of it. my mom went around telling people i was gonna end up killing aly!!!!

another horrible story... when felicia was a few months old i had put her for a nap on the couch. i went to check on her after doing the dishes and watched her roll onto the floor before i could grab her. didnt know she could roll before that :dohh: this poor kid... i was rocking her back to sleep when she was a couple months older and i had pneumonia so wasnt doing too good myself. i went to lay her down and go back to bed and hit her head on the side of the doorway :nope: wasnt hard and she didnt wake up, but i bawled. dont worry ladies, she isnt brain damaged from all this

children are such a learning experience!:winkwink:

Loo....loo roll improvisation :haha: love it!!! M had a serious poonami with no clothes changes in my bag around at the nct coffee morning....had to borrow a sleepsuit from one of them....felt soooo embarrassed. Spot the crap mum in the group:cry:

Dummy/pacifier - as i say only first proper day of try M with one...its tommy tippee closer to nature one and seems ok at the moment

Vitfa - agree with City Dummy is the wrong word and Pacifier or Soother is much more apt. I tried Jacob with one the other night as he was a bit unsettled he took it for a while but to be honest he doesn't really seem to need one right now he tends to send himself off to sleep quite happily. I am amazed that he is soooooo different to my girls were in that respect and I'm taking it while I can get it. :haha:

Thanks for all the words of wisdom ladies.....envious is probably the emotion I am feeling right now. Thing is I wouldn't leave J even if I could  suppose it's just the thought that they seem to still carry on as normal but you don't and it get's my feminist side all riled up

Mitch -I can't think of anything else to try sounds like you are doing all you possibly can. Hopefully this unsettled period won't last long for you :hugs:

Cupcake - I haven't had a bad Mummy moment yet but had loads with the girls. Think I scratched one of them on the face by accident when tiny and also one of them head butted me on the chin and screamed for ages...it is awful but NO ONE is perfect! it happens :hugs::hugs:

Loo - love your loo roll incident

:hugs::hugs::hugs: to all my other wonderful Mammas

Mitch technically colic is only diagnosed when you have more than 3 hours of solid crying/distress every day for 3 consecutive days or more. Genuine colic is very distressng for parent and baby, and apparently the cause still isn't really known. Because of that the word is just thrown about to describe fussy/distressed babies. To be honest, at this point, f a baby is crying at this point its generally either wind(top or bottom), hunger, tiredness or needing closeness (a cuddle). Thatys after you rule out illness of course. Most fussing or crying I've ever seen is hunger or wind. F isn't great at falling asleep though and seems to need some help (rocking and bouncing are her thing it seems)so she grumbles due to tiredness. Growth spurts aren't that predictable and some babies have extra ones, but yes, 3 weeks ish, 6 weeks and 3 months are tthe well known and common ones. So tha might be qhat you are having Mitch. As a rule if F has fed within the hour and shows hunger signs, I'll wind her first and feed second. If winding doesn' produce anything after about 20 minutes of tring, I'll feed her a bit and then wind again. If it does produce burps I'll offer boob after anyway to check. I take her off if she's not swallowing and give her a bit of a bounce to see if she has anymore wind or wants to sleep.
Basically if F s awake and not feeding then I lie her on her playmat. If she is uncomfortable then I'll wind her. I spend the bulk of my time bouncing or winding. From experience even if they've burped some they are very good at keeping a few bubbles, and they cause more discomfort low down than they do up top!

Also remember babies can grow up to a cm in 24 hours, anyone who had growing pains in childhood/puberty will know, that's got to be uncomfortable!!

Infacol by the way has a cumulative effect, it needs to be used consistantly to have full effect.

Don't know if any of that is helpful, but be reassured, some periods of crying sometmes is totally normal, and even though its very stressful and upsetting at the time, they do pass, and tend to be gut/bowel related!!

Oh god I just remembered another bad mummmy moment when Roh was tiny. I clpped his nails for the first time and clipped the whole tip of his fnger off! it actually wasn't much, but it bled and bled! I was convinced he' be maimed for life! :dohh: I cried for way longer than him! Broke my heart. I used emery boatds untill about 3 months ago after that!!

thanks for sharing your 'bad mummy' moments! its nice to read what everyone else gets up to.

i've been sorting out R's clothes today. more sleepsuits to put away that he has grown out of.... makes me a little sad. on the plus side he gets a whole new wardrobe as he now fits into some of the new clothes!

I tried to weigh R myself yesterday by weighing myself and then weighing myself holding R. Im guessing he is about 10lbs ish. Health visitor coming for the first time tomorrow so im hoping she will weigh him properly. im curious to see how much he has put on.

Mitch - no advice but we've had one of those days too, and nights. He took ages to settle last night, and has been awake for most of today except from 1-2 when we went out for a walk, 5 minutes at 4pm (then a leaked wee woke him up ) now we've just got him to sleep again half an hour ago. Otherwise he's been awake and either looking round happily or grizzling all day! I don't want to wish the time away but part of me is looking forward to when he can talk and tell us what's up! We had 2 pretty good nights sleep fri and sat but last night was crap again, so much for hoping he was in some sort of routine! I don't know whether to try a dummy or not, if he's unsettled putting my finger in his mouth doesn't help?

DH goes back to work tomorrow, not looking forward to having to do all nights by myself but he's really grumpy on not enough sleep!

Cupcake...i have had to sideline alot of 7.5lb sleepsuits M has never worn. Whenwe came out of hospital all our sleepsuits were a bit on the large side so we went to tesco to picke up some cheap ones. 7.5lb from mothercare were perfect so got same size....first wash the tesco ones were far too short:dohh:. So although they say 7.5lbs it depends on length of baby too...M is a good length just skinny little legs and arms. What a waste. Wont be long before she is out of 7.5lb mc ones too....and 9lbs drown her:nope:. Worried she couldnt stretch out properly in smaller sizes

Lozza...glads its not just me....she slept fine last night and is sleeping on and off today...in car, pram, swing and on sofa on throw butthen wakes up fairly happy...then gets all grizzly hmmmmm. Hubby jusy changying her..couldbe infacol and boob time again

Hi Lads!! Big :hugs: to everyone - hope you're keeping sane...

I've been catching up - harder to keep up with this thread now there's a baby demanding my attention!!

Emera - thanks (again) for being the oracle of the group!! Good description of colic - when we first had N we thought cry was just food/nappy but realise there's more and more reasons for him to cry (the latest session was because he was bored - he's now flailing quite happily on his play mat thing)...

Mitch - you sound like you're doing everything right hun... N had a really unsettled patch at 2week and 3weeks - needed feeding every 1.5hrs - made me really upset, thought i wasn't feeding well enough etc then calmed down 48hrs later but it was very hard work at the time! I didn't know if it was growth spurt or if it was that we had lots of visitors at both those times and i wasn't very relaxed...

Glowie - 9days in and you still very much need help/support and with all the hormones flying around it is completely understandable you're feeling a bit off...

emera - omg i am not going to be trimming N's nails!!! i find it hard enough trimming dogs claws never mind N's!!!! what a panic!!! they're just seeming to flake off at the minute so i'll let them keep doing that!
dummies/pacifiers/soothers: god i was such a snob about them before N was born - now i am a big convert!!! it gives us 5mins extra if he needs a feed, settles him off to sleep, is ideal to use during our colicky hours...love them!! we're just using a tommee tippee one - only one we've tried - seems to work so far!! may try a MAM one as lots of people seem to like them...

sorry for all the lads i've missed/forgotten...baby brain is pretty bad at the minute.

afm we tackled a big shopping trip with N today - was a military operation to get all of us ready, bottle of BM expressed and into town - had a lovely time, took lots of tiny clothes back and N now got a better wardrobe than me!!! Then headed to wagamama's for lunch :munch: and N had his bottle - no nip confusion here - does anyone actually get nip confusion??! N gets no more wind with a bottle by the way (again using closer to nature TT ones...)

Quick qu about bottles - the TT closer to nature one's have a valve in the sucky bit - i'm assuming that should go in the air rather than the milk when its tipped to feed??!!

right...hope all are well and babies are happy xxxx

Loo....loo roll improvisation :haha: love it!!! M had a serious poonami with no clothes changes in my bag around at the nct coffee morning....had to borrow a sleepsuit from one of them....felt soooo embarrassed. Spot the crap mum in the group:cry:

Dummy/pacifier - as i say only first proper day of try M with one...its tommy tippee closer to nature one and seems ok at the moment

mitch do you feel it settled M

- can pacifiers cause more wind burps etc
l x

vita - no more wind/burps with dummy at this end... i think our babies are just at the windy stage... xx

We spent all Saturday out so I put about 15 diapers in the bag just in case. He only used 3!

I was lucky with the dummies/binkies. We were given a two pack of Nuk and he took to them right away. Waula - I didn't want to use them either but this guy NEEDS something in his mouth if he's not sound asleep.

I'm sorry for anyone having hard nights but my night was fantastic. My hubby swaddled the LO up real snug, put a hat on, settled him against the side of the co-sleeper, popped in the binky and he slept. From 10:30pm-4:30am! I woke up several times and checked on him but he was fine. A few little whimpers but they were fixed just by me laying my hand on him. At 4:30 I stripped the swaddle off to wake him up for a change and a feed. He might have slept longer but nervous mama and her engorged boobs decided he needed to eat. I think the key was just setting him against the side.

Today's TMI: Every time I poo for the past four days I've bled. My bum hurts. I hope that goes away soon. My stitches hardly hurt anymore so if this could get better maybe I could be a little more active and shed some of this weight. And maybe consider DTD sometime. I do think I'll wait until the 6 week visit to discuss BC with the doc.

Dummys can actually help wind as sucking stimulates the peristaltic movement of the gut, as does gentle bouncing. :)

Waula I'd say if you found a dummy N likes just stick with it. He'll likely reject different shapes now he's used to one. And don't worry I was a dummy snob before kids too, but my my they've saved my sanity in their time. Its overuse thats an issue like 2 year olds having them in all day etc, that's a pretty bad plan. Roh loves his still. I'd like to wean him off, but he's not quite there. They don't leave hs bedroom though, unless I'm going out at nap time then he has one in the pushchair to sleep with ;)

Personally I think nipple confusion is a bit of a myth or certainly blown out of proportion. I'd guess it can happen, but I've never known anyone who had an issue

Nice weekend with my mum here :) walked 15 miles pushing a buggy with F in the carrier in the last 3 days  the exercise feels good :) went out for lunch today, managed to BF baby, help toddler eat and eat my own meal too. Skills!! :haha:

Bad mummy moments... I was just playing Draw Something with a friend and G fell off the boob and was hunting for it but I had to finish drawing "grandma" before I could help her.

Vitfa, the Brest friend makes things more standard and holds baby in position. Allows me to use my iPad... You know, for Draw Something.

Emera you have amazing mummy skills. I'm still working on the eating without dripping food on the little one in the sling.

Speaking of which, my Moby wrap needs a name because it's getting a personality. So far all I can come up with is Mr Hoots. Some of you ladies are really creative and can probably come up with something far better. It's this one: https://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41yg1nWMW%2BL._AA300_.jpg

Kymied I don't have creative naming skills but your wrap is so pretty :)

I'm doing a :happydance: because I managed to get both kidlets asleep in bed by 7.15pm and I'm now on the sofa with feet up eating my stew and broccoli :) weeee! :)
