There is no mortgage. He paid for the house in cash, so there was never a mortgage, and we don't pay rent either. We pay the property tax and house insurance and all the bills to keep the house running, and he doesn't pay a penny into the house. Essentially, the house is ours, it's just in his name because he assumes that if he puts it in our name before he dies, we'll refuse to let him stay here when he comes to visit every year. By keeping it in his name, we can't tell him he can't stay here.
