So today I was by mc Donald's and had a hugeeee craving for a banana milkshake so I got one thinking it will be fine and asked my friend if I could and she said yeah just not soft ice cream you can't have.

It suddenly hit me after though that the thickness could be due to ice cream and mc Donald's one is soft ice cream :dohh:

I've been looking around and some people saying its fine they had loads when pregnant and the milk is pasteurised and I looked on the ingrednits on the website and see nothing alarming whilst others are saying no because its soft ice cream and u will get listeria which basically means its all over for you then!!

I'm such an idiot I can't believe I let myself do it!! I'm the biggest health OCD freek now I'm pregnant always worrying what I can and can't eat and won't eat it if I'm unsure

By sounds of listeria it's basically a type of food poisoning so doesn't necessarily mean it'll happen just like any food u eat even if ur not pregnant always a chance however ur more vulnerable as your pregnant?? I just don't want anything to happen I'm panicking now :(( when would the symptoms develop even?? I know it's like sickness/dirriohea /fever /chills

I had a McFlurry last week and went through the same thing. I gave myself a good panic, read lots of horror stories, and felt that I had done something terrible. In the end, I did not get sick and everything is just fine. I think the chances are very slim that you will actually get sick as McDonald's cleans their machines very well and very often (or so I have heard). Try to relax!

I was always told to avoid McDonalds milkshakes but I wouldn't worry about Listeria, I doubt 1 shake would cause any harm xxx

I have had milkshakes make from various places with soft ice cream and frequently from mc donalds with this one as well and all my babes have been fine. As a matter of fact, with my lil giy I practically lived off of milkshakes and soft-serve ice cream sundaes as that is what I craved the whole time with him! Mmmm, this makes me want to go to crystal's and grab a shake! They are the best! But don't worry really, I honestly don't know one person who didn't while pregnant :/...just think. we are all alive right and back in the day none of these warning were around. Not even when I was pregnant with my 15 year old. I wasn't warned from anything but tuna and all that is wrong with him is his nasty teen attitude and mouth...but I doubt soft-serve and lunch meats was the cause :/

The NHS don't actually recommend avoiding McDonald's milkshakes or mcflurrys etc, and they work with the food standards agency to identify food with risks for pregnant women, so you'll be fine! X

I believe a long time ago this was an issue but not any longer. Just make sure you go to a clean restaurant and you will be fine!

Ive had a few milkshakes and mcflurrys lol i never knew that you werent supposed to have them opps

i THINK the milk or egg used would be pasturised and maccers do not make anything fresh. even their eggs for the breakfast come out of a bottle (my hubs used to work there but dont tell him i told you he he) therefore it should be fine xx

I have shakes from mc d wendys jacks.. I dont think its so bad... I have sweet tooth all the time lol:)

I had them ALOT with DS - the only thing to worry about is if they clean it properly - they will be checked regularly so I wouldnt worry x

Really? I had a large mcdonalds milkshake at 16 weeks...guzzled the lot and baby and me are fine!! I wouldnt worry about it.

Aha thanks ladies I guess your all right! My mum telling me chill out I only had it one off lol she ate mussels whole pregnancy with me which is a big no no I suppose it's all about cleaniness and major places like that my midwife said its pasteurised, the ingredients don't look alarming to me but what do I know!! Your all living proofs it's ok thanks lol!! Xx

The risk is much higher in other foods like fruits and veggies but I never see anyone freaking out over that on here. Enjoy your milkshakes.

I had one the other day. If you think about, have you ever heard of someone getting Listeria from McDonald's? There'd be a huge outcry if it happened. They have to be so careful about cleanliness that I wouldn't worry about it at all.

You can have it but if they don't clean the machines properly there is a high chance of getting food poisoning from it.
But generally if its only once and a while it should be fine :)

I've actually worked in an ice-creamery and I know the real reason they advice avoiding soft ice cream. Its mostly to do with the machine it comes out of. If the machine hasn't cleaned properly or correctly it could end up carrying the bacteria. We had lots of pregnant women come to our store who'd request a milkshake made with hard ice cream rather than soft ice cream. We were also taught how to clean the machine properly and correctly and it is a long and complicated process. We literally had to take the machine apart to clean and make it bacteria free. This was a long process so it was done only 2 nights a week and the other 5 days the machine was cleaned with water and some anti bacteria spray that was safe on food machines.

So yeah, sorry about the long post but that could be the reason why they advice avoiding soft ice cream. You never know when the machine was last thoroughly cleaned and as a result the ice cream could end up containing the bacteria listeria.

The soft serves have been a craving of mine and been having heaps (even though I know I shouldn't). Yes there is a possibility of getting listeria, but it's not a 'you ARE going to get it'. Don't stress too much about it.

Seriously, this list of things you can't have/do during pregnancy is getting ridiculous. People used to smoke, drink, and eat whatever the hell they wanted to, and babies turned out just fine. (Obviously I wouldn't smoke or drink, but you know.) Don't freak out about little things! You'll be stuck going hungry if you worry about all the things different people claim you aren't supposed to have.
